the goal for today's event was to raise awareness about safety in the neighborhood, and to raise funds for the maslin family to the tune of $20,000. >> this is not only the greatest city in the world, this is the greatest neighborhood in america. >> reporter: d.c. councilman tommy wells hosting the festival. fun and games, information booths, a beer garden and bake sale with proceeds benefiting the maslin family. on august 18th, a young husband and father tc maslin was robbed, attacked and left for dead. he was hit with the butt of a bb gun and baseball bat and suffered severe brain trauma. >> fair doesn't begin to describe it. >> their lives have been forever changed. >> we are going to lose all the things we've worked so hard for for years and years. it's devastating. it's completely devastating. it's hard to reimagine the future when we thought, you know, at this time right now we would be looking forward to having another baby, and moving on with our lives. now we're kind of at this very different point where the future is completely uncertain. >> reporter: the daily struggle is heart breaking, but she says they wouldn't have made it this far without support. the hours immediately after the attack, friends and family jumped into action. the web site snow balled, culminating into this event. >> i have been blown away. we thought the support would have diminished by now and it continues to grow. >> reporter: doctors hope maslin will be released from the hospital next month. abby is keeping faith. >> he is talking, he is able to walk, assisted with a cane and a wheelchair. he's making progress. >> reporter: the couple and their son, jack, are moving to the eastern shore to a handicapped accessible home. a tough decision, because capitol hill is close to their hearts, but it's clear going forward they'll continue to feel the love and support from this community. >> the donations so far has been substantial. more will be needed to support long-term recovery for maslin. we have a link on myfoxdc.com. meantime, three suspects are charged with assault in the case. 17-year-old sunny coody and tommy branch were ordered held without bond earlier this month. 18-year-old michael moore waived his right to a preliminary hearing. prince george's county police are looking into the shooting death of a woman. officers responded to reports of gunshots before 3:00 a.m. on hamlin street and found a woman suffering from a wound. she was pronounced dead at the scene. police have not identified the victim. anyone with information is being asked to give them a call. prince george's county has agreed to pay more than $3.5 million to 10 people either falsely arrested or injured by police during a wild postgame celebration at the university of maryland. lawyers say $2 million of the settlement will go to john mcenin a, the student badly beaten by police as the crowd celebrated a maryland basketball win over duke back in march of 2010. one of the officers was acquitted of the assault friday. another officer was convicted of second degree assault. couldn't get much better than the weather we had this weekend. but what about the work week? >> it was gorgeous today. let's turn over to gwen talbart. gorgeous today. >> absolutely gorgeous. the entire weekend was fantastic. i don't think anybody could complain. winds picked up a little bit today. other than that, plenty of sunshine and temperatures were where they should have been. let's take a look. 67degrees at reagan national airport. 65 at dulles. 66at bwi thurgood marshall. tomorrow things starting to cool down ever so slightly. currently 56 degrees at annapolis. 50 at baltimore. 54 in the nation's capital. 45 at dulles. and 43 at culpeper. skies not too bad. clear sky tonight out there. cool as well as temperatures dip down to the upper 40s. winds pushing in from the west 5 to 10 miles per hour. overall, not bad at all. we are looking forward to a pleasant week ahead. i'll be more than happy to show you our accu weather fox 5 seven-day forecast later on. back to you. thanks. coming up, he was considered a leader of the democrat's liberal party. the life and death of george mcgovern. >> and our fox 5 political analysts join us to break down the big issues. >> metro cuts the ribbon on dupont circle's new escalators. those stories are up next when the news continues. as governor, i cut fifive billion dollars in spending and balanced the budget every year. and tim kaine and i both cut our own pay as governors to lead by example. mark warner and i reached across party lines to get things done. we were a great team in richmond and we'll be a great team in washington. i'm tim kaine and i approve this message ...because we'll work together to restore fiscal responsibility grow our economy and create jobs. [ male announcer ] tim kaine. bringing people together to tackle the challenges of tomorrow. the country tonight is mourning the death of former senator george mcgovern. he died this morning at the age of 90. he is known as a passionate democrat who served three senate terms. he also ran for president three times. most notably against richard nixon in 1972. here's more on the life of the late george mcgovern. >> i love the united states, but i love it enough, so i want to see changes made. the american people want to believe in their government. want to believe in their country. and i'd like to be one of those that provides the kind of leadership that would help restore that kind of faith. >> reporter: george mcgovern will long be remembered as an orator for peace and the nominee for president who lost to nixon. his 22 year career in washington was marked by massive improvements for rural americans in farming and increased awareness in the devastation of world hunger. >> if you grew up in the great plains, you have to live with the philosophy next year will be better. you can't survive any other way. >> reporter: hailing from the plain state of south dakota, he was a quiet kid who found his voice in the high school debate team. his award winning speeches would serve him well when he was sworn in as united states representative in 1957. after a failed bid for the senate in 1960, he became a special assistant to president kennedy and focused on kennedy's high priority, food for peace program, which would operate in more than a dozen countries. by the time mcgovern left to run again for the senate again in 1962. he won this time, and as a senator, became known for his growing contempt for the vietnam war. >> the first time i spoke against vietnam, my son was then 9 years old. he's now 19, and faced with the draft. it never occurred to me when i started speaking out against that war that it would some day catch my own son 10 years later. >> reporter: he voted in favorite of the 1964 resolution which authorized military action in vietnam and would regret it. as the years dragged on, he would become more and more adamant that the solution for vietnam was political and not military. by 1972, he accepted the democratic nomination for president at 3:00 a.m., and his platform revolved around an appeal of withdrawal from vietnam. >> come home, america, to the affirmation that we have a dream, to the conviction -- >> i knew that we had 75 or 80 million people out there watching the convention during the horse play time. i was probably lucky if i had 2 million people watching at 2:30 in the morning. we did well in guam, as i recall. we were out in primetime out there. that was about the only place where it was well timed. >> reporter: after nixon brutally defeated him, mcgovern lost his senate re-election bid and left congress in 1981. a failed run for the democratic nomination in '84 saw him return to private life for good. he remained politically relevant as he moved in and out of different think tasks and served as ambassador to the u.n. food program. he joked his political timing was off, but stove to deepen the relationship between the country and the people he loved number the day he died. >> president obama released a statement saying the former senator dedicated his life to serving the country he loved. he was a statesman of great conscious and conviction and michelle and i share our thoughts and prayers with his family. mark plot kin joins us now. good to see you as always. >> good to be here. >> you were on the floor in 1972 when george mcgovern was nominated. how do you think he will be remembered? >> yeah, i was just a kid. but he was nominated at 3:00 in the morning and then he had that terrible unfortunate situation with tom eagleton. had to replace him. he was an unapologetic liberal champion. he didn't run away from that word. in some ways, bill clinton learned from him. he was his texas coordinator in 1972 and he moved the party to the center. but more than anything, he was just vigorous about opposing the war and he only carried the district of columbia and massachusetts. people had bumper stickers that said, don't blame me, i voted for mcgovern. >> another person vigorous about the anti-war efforts, president obama. the presidential debate is on monday. want to talk about the new gallup poll showing romney up by 7 points, but a lot of people asking if this poll is right. >> well, nate silver of the new york times disputed their methodology, gallup. it's really a variance with all the other polls. but it does create a possible scenario that somebody could win the popular vote like romney, but still lose the electoral college vote and that means you have to get 270, that the person that lost the popular vote would actually become president. >> what if none of the candidates reach that number of 270? >> then it's a very dynamic situation, but somewhat predictable. it goes into the house of representatives. each congressional delegation, caucuses and has one vote. right now there are 33
