New tonight, a monument tall problem for one of dcs biggest attractions, elevator problems are forcing the Washington Monument to now stay closed until next month. The Washington Monument, the National Park service said today, the elevator inside that big thing, well, you said at the end of its life. And what does that mean . Well, they had originally planned to close it down for ten days. They got in there, they looked at it. What they like, theyre going to have to keep the monument elevator closed the rest of this month. It will not open up until beginning of september. Take a look. Remember, they dont have a lot of options here. This is a 555 foot monument. And there is only one elevator inside of it bringing all those tourists up and down all day long throughout the year. Theyre looking at the lighting in the stairways and theyre also now going to have to come up with a longterm plan to replace and mod modnize this elevator.
