the streets. massive women's rallies werealli held this afternoon the largest here in d.c. where it's estimated about 500,000 people gathered. we have live team coverage in the district with live t fox5's ronica clearly and paul wagner. ronica, we begin with you. what is it like out there. >>reporter: li let me tell youe have been here all day for this march from where it started by the capital. now we are at the he lip withh the white house behind us. this entire space was full, stress and blocks of peoplef filled this area. the original route was actually planned to just go down along the mall.l. the crowds were so unexpectedly massive that at one point reports came out that the march itself was canceled, it would just be a recall yes, but the rc crowds continued to move alonge these streets so they said you know what we won't follow that single route.si multiple streets along d.c. to.. end up here at the ellipse.llip now at the start of it therehere were speeches by politician and celebrities and one key things that ian have to share with youu being inside this march for the entire day, cellphone servicevie was basically non-existent andnx one of the things that people kept saying inside the march to me was, is this being covered? do people know how am people are here because when you were inside this march you were basically disconnected from the world. certainly the information we had we shared with the marchersrche here, but a major concern and thing that we just kept hearing repeated was do people know how am people are here outside of d.c.? as you said at the top oe the report, estimates are now over 500,000 people arrived at today's march really from around the country. now there's really no one here. we want to actually show youou something along one of the barricades. to be clear, we realize you can't see this too clearly. we're deliberately not zoom inom too closely along these signs because am of them are explicit, many of them use profanities that we can't share with you on television, but this is basically what the marchers have left hundred. guess a message to president trump if you will to let them know and share that they want their voice to be heard. if you want to see what those s signsee say, we have a lot of pictures up on facebook and twitter so you can get a feel for a lot of messages and sent unless that people brought toha the march today.t peoday we're continuing with our coverage with fox5 paul wagner. over to you.o >>reporter: hey, ronica, i'm am freedom plaza a, that's pennsylvania avenue behind mee and late this afternoon pennsylvania absolutely jambed with protestors as far as the eye ey could see, all the way up to tho cap to. we're never going to really know exactly how many people cameople here to washington to protest, the us park police got out ofou that business a very long time ago. but we could tell you this, that just after 11:00 this morning metro said they had ridership of 275,000 people and as of 4:00 this afternoon they're reporting 597,000 people were on metro. now, as far as the pieceful in is concerned, it was incrediblee by all reports, us park police, d.c. police and the mayor offico all tell me no arrests, no major incidents. it was calm, courteous and kind. and this and this and this andnd this, waves protestors coming together asthr one. we're here to support the women's movement and also tolso support equal rights for all. my kids decided that they wantey us to come out and support this cause. i don't think it's hyperbole dob say that this turnout is absolutely extraordinary.ry. it's now quarter after noon and this crowd is still coming downn louisiana avenue.lo we had to go all the way out to tacoma station to come all the way down.wa we had to go out to come down.oe this is awesome. clear, that's what so am of the signs were. racist, extra brag dosshouse. and funny, too.too. everything on this list is him.m the number of people that came to protest overwhelmed the mall and the streets around and across it.ac take a look at this. pennsylvania avenue wasn't even on the original route.te. it's packed as far can see. to get close it's very hard and the amount of people here andere the energy is just incredible. as one woman put it, this is what otesting is supposed to look like, calm, courteous, civil. my photographer jason than a i i walked all around today. we were all over the city and we were down on constitution avenue as people were walking along and you really could feel the energy. i was really an incredible day. i can tell you that d.c. fire.c. and ems was quite busy today. we just checked in with them.he. they said they had as many as 50 people that were treated in medical tenths around the areaea and 25 a of those people had to be transported to hospitals, but we can report that no major injuries that we're aware of at this point. back to you guys in the studio.. hey, paul, you have moreore experience than most reporter in this town and i'm wondering if you think back, have you been before and if so, which one was it? can any compare to this? s the pictures were just stunning today. >>reporter: the million man march can certainly compare to it.it i covered that back in the '90s. know at the time thaw theyhe thought they had a million people.peop the us park police said theyaid didn't and that's when the us park police got out of the business. they didn't want to deal with that anymore.that i tell you, it felt so big. it felt so incredibly big.big. we saw people for just anywheret you looked it was just people, people, people.eopl and everybody was just so courteous to each other. there was no pushing or shoveling or angry shouts org or anything like that. itanyt just was an extraordinary event. i've never seen anything like ii other than the million man march.ma there's also just speculation now you that this was a huge turnout of certainly larger than yesterday's inauguration at this point. but that's speculation. we just don't know for sure. > paul wagner live at freedomem plaza tonight. thank you, pa many other marchs took place across the country.ntry this was the scene earlier in new this morning and on one of the networks and they show an empty field. i said, wait a minute, i made ae speech, i looked out. the field was -- it looked liked a million, a million and a halff people. they showed a field where there were practically nobody standing there and they said donald trump did no a lot of media about thethe responsibility to hold donald trump accountable. it goes two ways attracted hundreds of thousands of people while so-called sister marchs took place in more than 600 cities not only across the countryry actually but around the world. these are just some of the images coming in from new york, chicago and loss angels. women saying they want to send a clear message to the presidented that they will fight for their rights during his administration. the march endedad about an hour ago here in d.c. and fox55 lindsay was watts in that crowd today. she joins us live from northwest. lindsay, how are things lookingg out there? have most people left. >>reporter: lauren and matt, very good news if you're plankrp on travelling in northwest anywt time soon. the march is over.. the streets are still busier than usual for this time of night, but nothing compared tope what we saw earlier when it was impossible to drive, difficult to walk anywhere because there were suc we are at saturday andatur pennsylvania and this is one of the block aides that was set up where protestor were not able ta pass this point, able to get closer to the white house.se. the question that we've gotten present marchs today is how am of us came out and earlier we heard an estimate from officiall that there were 500 h thousand. metro has said as of 4:00 they had about 600,000 riders. we're hoping tonight we'll get t more firm number.m nu a lieutenant of different issues from president trumps here today. here are a few of the chants that we heard in this area of the white house. that's our house. i think in h some way it's hards to characterize the overall message because this has been for some this was certainly an anti trump march.ump others will say this was more about standing for differentffer causes unrstanding against the president. things like reproductive rights, civil rights, overall human rights. before protestor took to thetest streets there was a big rally, a lot of celebrities.brit it lasted several hours and herd are just a few of the speakers. it seems as though we had all shifted into a ball of comfort, that justice would prevail and that good would end in the end. well, good did not win this election. but goodwill win in the end. we're here today to thank generations of organizers and troublemakers and hell raisersrs who formed secret sist who opened planned health centers in their communities and demanded the right to control their own bodies. and today we're here to deliver a message, we're not going to take this lying down. do (cheers) and i was just talking with people from our many sister marchs including the one in berlin and they asked me to send a special message, we in berlin know that walls don't work. and back here live i know ronica was showing us that huge wall of signs. i think ' was over on the the other side of the white house, , believe, so we don't havee anything like that here. we're just seeing a few of these signs left behind right here. i think the good news with all of this is unlike those violent protestors we saw yesterday, smashing windows, setting cars on fire, this was march, stayed under control andl again the march has disbursedsbr tonight so traffic is able to move freely again in northwest d.c. back to you. thank you, lindsay. talking about those numbers again, the national park service doesn't give out estimates of the crowd, but we do know from metro an estimated 275,000ated people road the rails this morning. that number is ate times more than a norm pal saturday and busier than most weekdays. it is also more than the 197,000 who used the rail service yesterday morning to attend the inaugeral events on the national mall. as of 4:00 p.m., lindsay justst mentioned this, more than 595,000 people road the rail service today.serv >> that's a lot of people. and the massive crowds on metro did not appear to cause any other problems today which is really good news. lindsay was saying so far things pretty smooth, no v there and things go well on the rails, also. fox5's teisha lewis live at shady grove metro station in rockville with more. >>reporter: hey, lauren and matt, an all day affair as the women's march on washington here at shady grove metro station it is all wrapping up. if you look behind me, take a look, you can see the droves of participants ready to go home, many of them traveling from all different places. on the other side of this tunnes we do know that there are are charter buses that have essentially bussed people backbs to the shady grove bus station. i want to show you this picture and this pretty much says it all. this picture is what it looked like earlier today as participants were arriving here and heading out to the women's march on washington.ingt now back out here live again many of those folks coming backg here and one person that we didw meet if you want to come with me, her name is patty and s you started here at shady grovee metro station earlier, you'renning here.g tell me a little bit about thisi poster that you're holding because it's a little bit it different than some of's the poe terse that we've seen.n. when we got here this morning, the lines were so long that they went way out to the end there on both sides.. so we were standing in line and i decided to take my sign and go around and everybody tell usell where they were from and so we got, i think, 34 countries and i think we have all but nine states and so these where aller the people are from. you came from michigan. why was it important for you to be here. >> oh, my good, in i really believe that democracy matters and we went our leaders to be accountable, but we the people have to be accountable and so that means speaking out. you said you have 34 different countries.co i see germany and turkey and south african in a poll,. >> green kenya, south africa, chili, canada, area gin teen a. >> and you did all this while ti you were waiting to get on petro this morning? >> yes. > tell me when your day startedarte and when would it end. >> we have to drive back to michigan. it will probably end tomorrow. > joining us from michigan. i'm assume you're going to frame that picture and it will hang in your house.ur >> maybe so.o. > that's the very latest fromes lady grove metro station rockville. teisha, that gives you some perspective there, 34 countries and then driving back to michigan, that's something.ha several places here int' the district are lending a helpful hand for both the inauguration and the women's march on washington there are about 130 restaurant, bars and coffee shops that came up with a campaign for inaugeral weekendek called all in service d.c. they're giving back to local loc organizations thats of s the s t community. so if you eat or drink at someat of these places through tomorrow, some of the money that you spend will then be donated to organizations including the central kitchen, whitman walker clinic, thrive c and planned parenthood, a the look ofok different organizations included. each business has selected alect fund to contribute to. actually some of us weren't too excited about what was going to be happening with inauguration, but we know it's an opportunity to serve the city and also really connect with everyone that felt similarly.mila so for us it's just a way to really do what we do and kind of double down on what we're giving in the process.ess. the restaurant group behind trick coffee house is also asking for individual things. > you know what i was thinking about today, all these people that were down at the mall t yesterday anhed today, there's there. >> can you think about the people who have to do that hardt job tonight. >> yeah. busy after yesterday. > a couple day, right.ht >> it's great to live in d.c.,c, though. i really think a bout days like this. > witness history. what a great job. > coming up, why use words when you can use smilely face he. >> at least that's what i try to tell my mother.othe she's using them now.w. >> we'll tell you about a restaurant in one city that are using emojies, you know the things that you use all the times these days? they're doing it to rate food. we'll be back in a few minutes. . have a late night coming up? >> not in the next coupleuple dayment we have had a few though, sure. study suggesting that you might want to extra sleep in the days prior. >> this is interesting that researchers at the university of california gary in canada set up 12 healthy men with sleepep patterns and kept them awake for 38 hours while conducting tests. they were then tested one week later after they each went to bed two hours earlier each nighh before the study.st results found an improvement in both brain function and memory.m i'm a huge person when it comess to sleep.to i think it keeps me healthy. i know you are up with the babyh all the time and you don't get as much sleep. >> i'm a big sleeper. thankfully my baby sleeps pretty well. we know this, you need sleep. i just wish you could catch up. if you could sleep beforehand ih have to do an all nighted. >> a new study found some chainn restaurants in the us haven't followed through on their promises to boost the nutrition of back in 2011 several restaurants pledged to reduce calories, saturated salt and calories inin children's menus, but no significant changes were made. it's also welcoming any opportunity to encourage children to make healthy choicea he.lte i do remember there was a push.. i know the happy meals they now offer some fruit and yogurt inor ted of fridays and things like that. you are what you eat. one public health department isr jumping on the emoji band wagon. from a giant grin to a smirk, the little faces are now being used to rank restaurants in seattle. fox's kim joist has more. mor if he this had posted scores i wouldn't have gone in. >>reporter: sarah shot doesn'tn want what happened to her to happen she's had the miss fortune of getting e coli twice fromom restaurant food.oo internal bleeding and there's small children who have died, adults who have died from e coli. she's been part of the push touh rate restaurants with visible rankings and this is what the wa county came up with.ith. excellent, good, okay or needs improvement. we created a system that can be universally understood. county executive dowel constance teen says it is important that rankings were more than pass/fail for the 12,000 restaurants in kings county.nty. they are more than just business. they make our neighborhood moreo vibrant places to live.o food safety inspectors are now paired up to make sure there's consistency in the ratings. restaurants are graded on a o curve based on their zip code. only the top zip code helps to take into account the variation that coulv be a newaria owner in the busin, new workers in the business, a change in menu or a change in inspector. for sarah shot she says she's's not crazy about grading a restaurant on a curve but she's finally this project is underway. consumers can make improved decisions in the marketplace. i like the idea of emojies. i read that apple has the hope of do just using emojis.moji now on the iphone it will type up food and they pop up. > they are forcing you to use it. >> gary is going to be back witk a look at your full forecast. don't go anywhere, the news at 6 will be right back. . gary there's been a lot of talk about attendance yesterday at the inauguration, one thing ithn know for sure it was a lot warmer yesterday than it was eight years ago. yea >> i thought you were going to say today.ay no, it changed everything. it wases so cold before and b yesterday although it was dreary and it did rain on and was much better when you had to stand out there. >> no doubt.>> it was a huge difference. even a temperature of 48 or 49, i know succame back from being out all day yesterday and she said, wow, it was the coldest 48-degrees that she ever felt. >> it was windy on the mall. there's nothing to block you. i think everyone agreed that it was a lot warmer than what it could have been. > a lot warmer than maybe whate it should have been, too. you could see it's gloomy outlom there tonight. we do have these low clouds.low this is a fog, drizzle that's kind of hung in today. the drizzle monster would not go away. we'd hope that we would get this broken up a little bit today, not necessarily to get some sunshine in, but to allow temperatures to get up just a u little bit warmer. we basically stayed for the most part in the upper 40s. we're 49-degrees here in town. gaithersburg 46, way up here in westminster it's 45. same for winchester. a little bit warmer down to the south an the warmest air is pretty muchty just over the mountains. it hasn't really come up intop virginia and for the most partot it hasn't really come up into north carolina, either. we've just kind of been stuck and there hants been anything t below all this away. gaithersburg yours, theithe visibility is down tors one, frederick two, martinsburg atins mile and a half, culpeper a mile and a half as well.s here in the city we were at 6 miles, now we've come down too three. i suspect as we progress through the next few hours we're going to end up a little bit thicker fog and then a few showers willl move in late this evening.veni temperature pretty much stuck at right around 49-degrees or so. middle to upper 40s for the region, okay? we'll have foge and drizzle late this evening. we'll introduce a chance forhanc some showers, you can see here as they start coming into latere this evening. going toingre actually start off dry, but late in the day tomorrow, showers will return. we may get just a little bit bit tomorrow, but some of you will still be stuck in the upper 40s. monday looks wet. we're going to have rainave tomorrow afternoon, tomorrow evening and tomorrow night and the heaviest of the rain will come in for the first part of monday. in terms the trend you can see -- i in r didn't intend forr that to be in hearing the trendh is going to be the nice 50s and there may or may not be 6060 that's coming on the seven day forecast to show you. right now we just have theave clouds and drizzle in place.lace notice the showers are coming up from the south. as we start getting into the late evening, early morningly hours some of this will move across so we're definitely going to have some showers. back in texas another storm system is developing. it's going t texosystem be movin really tomorrow night and monday and it looks like believe it or not southern areas on mondayday could hear a rumble of thunder with this storm system moving through. m so a pretty intense storm. temperatures will steady, fog, drizzle and then some showers during the
