that is a great song for the chats we're going to have today. amy taylor filling in for molly today. good to have you here. >> great to be here. that was my mom's favorite song at the time. >> we were just talking about your mom that's a little sign. >> we were. yeah. >> molly is gone today because she was at the critic's choice awards yesterday with ryan jay. >> looking fabulous i might add. >> look at tho molly looked stunning on the red carpet. so does ryan he always does, but look at her. >> i told her i loved the aubergine aka egg plant. that's a great color beautiful on her. >> she actually one of the women that won an award viola davis she won last night, that's not the dress she wore last night, but wore a dress similar to molly's. what is so great about the show you don't have to watch it or what we're going to say. the show itself was about being body positive and insecurities and talking about that as a person. viola davis who is in how to getaway with murder. she talked about having to lose weight or walk in heels or lose her belly for a role and then she said why. >> it was interesting she felt all of this pressure i better lose my belly i better change. you and i were saying how refresfreshing it is to see some people are leading the wayn relaxing all women. >> she says it's a privilege of a lifetime to just be who you are and she didn't learn that until she was 51. the whole show was less about vanity and opening up about who we are as people and celebrating that. >> this is the nordstrom catalog for christmas. i said gee tiffany i have been seeing ashley gram a lot. >> love her. and she did a sports illustrated cover. you're seeing a little more the standard for women's bodies and we were saying, -- >> kim is 16, >> she is like if i could look like that i would be so happy she's gorgeous. >> she's drop dead gorgeous. >> she's on the new season of america's next top model. >> and she's going to be a judge. >> i think it's wonderful. she's beautiful, she's out there talking about i saw an interview the other day where she said somebody asked will you be, have you been asked to b victoria's secret show and she was like honey if i have been asked i would be in it. she says we haven't come quite that far, but she really hopes in the next few years. i think we all identify with a real woman, with real curves. really proud of who she is. >> aren't there men out there that like that look? correct me if i'm wrong? >> yeah remember marilyn monroe. she's been all different sizes, but at her main size which was size 10, 12, she had curves. gorgeous woman. absolutely. >> what do you want to say about christmas cards amy tailer? >> i was thinking as i was sitting there writing out the 800th christmas card and i love it and do it every year. i get the family in the outfits. most of my friends with kids are doing this get the picture taken and get it printed get the card made select the card, address, stamps, envelope all of that, and it's just, it's a lot of work. >> it and it's pension send everybody -- it'sexpensive. >> it's a lot of expensive. a lot of people aren't doing it and they will put it on facebook. merry christmas. i'm wondering is the christmas card becoming a dinosaur? >> i don't think so i'm a big fan. >> you're a big fan of christmas cards? >> i love getting them. >> i love getting them i don't like doing them. but to get you have to give. letters anymore. i actually like the pictures better and i save them year to year because i like to see how peoples kids change and grow. but i know a lot of people would rather just keep it on social media, but i always feel like who i have on social media i lose as pictures and as memories. >> how do you mean that? >> i don't print pictures anymore. if i get a picture i feel like it is meaningful. >> we should all be print more pictures should be printed. >> we want to know on facebook go to facebook morning blend do you send christmas cards or as amy says, is it a dinosaur? is it getting old? i don't know. >> i don't think it's getting old in my personal opinion, but it's a lot of work. >> it is a lot of work a lot of people are foregoing them. first up today for many people family get togethers they can cause a lot of stress. >> my family is perfect i don't know about yours. >> from politics to old issues time requires strategies for staying out of the sticky situations. dr. john duffy is a clinical psychologist, best selling author and also speaker on relationships and parenting and he is here today to talk to us about this. i admit, it is very stressful because, in our family we are trying to coordinate many different celebrations of christmas and be respectful to inlaws. >> there are so many different dynamics involved everyone has their traditions, everyone has their wishes and everyone comes into this holiday season with their baggage from the year so it's an incredibly stressful time of year for most everybody. even people who love this time of year i think to come in with this anticipatetory anxiety like this might not go the way i'm hoping. >> this year there is a lot of between the way people feel in your family as well as if you lost a loved one. there is interturmoil about who gets what and things like that. what do you hear from your patients about the holidays and the stress they feel. >> there is so much unnecessary anxiety coming into the season and a lot of unresolved hurt you know. even from a year ago from what happened at christmas time a year ago. that i think it's really hard for people to come in clean. to come in fee i'm just going to talk with my family it's going to be perfectly fine. think by and large, it's loaded it's a loaded time of year, and all the emotion from the year kind of comes to a head because this is the one time where we're all getting together so something is going to go wrong, it's likely to go wrong now. >> it's funny i will admit i had a situation with my sister-in-law where it was stressful at christmas because of feeding her children on her could do to make it easier on me next time. [laughter] >> at 9:05 please do this. [laughter] >> at 3:45 please do this. >> next year you could make it easier on me by doing this. but it's true, we're trying to put it on someone else, but there are things you should do yourself right? >> yes. >> take personal responsibility. >>i think the more self-aware and others aware you are the more you can avoid some of the so often. so if you kind of are aware like this person seems a little quieter than usual i'm just going to check in on them. take in the emotional temperature of the family or of any given situation or conversation at any point and time, gives you the opportunity to intervene and i'm not against intervening wildly. i'm not against going in there and saying okay we're not going to talk about that right now. either you bring a little humor into it. if you know you're heading into you know what we're not going to do that right now. >> so acknowledge it? >> absolutely. i think it is completely reasonable to acknowledge it instead of adjust watching -- just watching the train wreck happen in slow motion. >> it could be your sister, your brother someone you're very close with it's hard not to be a little offended or guess defensive or harbor that turmoil and let it fester a little bit by the time her sister is coming to visit saying i'm not going to do those things. how do you let defiance and be cooperative without being pissed off? [laughter] >> for lack of a better term. >> it's a great question. part of it is recognizing this is family everybody is coming into this a little pissed off a little anxious. to be the family therapist is not the worst place to be and you're the understanding one. you know what i mean. >> listen maybe more than talking. >> listen more than talk something huge. as the family therapist or compromising. >> i feel it's you. >> it's not. i'm really lucky our family doesn't have this turmoil everybody just gets drunk. [laughter] >> i feel fortunate, but i know a lot of people that have this over and over and the holidays aren't always fun for them. they are not looking forward to that. >> i think you can set a tone. even beforehand. like if you know something difficult is coming if you know like grandma is going to talk about timmy's grades and h we can say that's off limits until january. we'll talk about it then. >> i would literally call and say do not bring up the math. we're not talking about it. >> the biggest problem i find is boundary settings and we don't do enough of it. so, between a lack of boundaries and excessive alcohol intake, sometimes the boundary gets super loose and we end up saying something we regret. just don't know where our tipping point is and we cross the line. >> someone has three glasses of wine they say how is the math? you are like i told them not to say anything about the math. >> right. >> so the alcohol is a big deal because sometimes you don't even realize that you're a little looser than you might have been. >> absolutely whether we talk about boundaries they get looser and more per miable so you have to beware. i'm not because like you said tiffany. >> it makes you jolly. >> right it gets us through and that is good enough, but if you don't know your tipping point and you head into hurtful territory we all know how ugly that can be. >> what about the election stuff specifically. there are i think some people dealt with it over thanksgiving others didn't get a chance if they were at the other side of family. it can still be a very touching topic for many people. topic to talk about honestly. it seems like families should be able to talk about politics and have different points of view and share those points of view with each other around the holidays. this year seems so particularly, there is deviciveness. i hope we have different conversation a year from now, but right now it feels like too big of a risk to bring up. think just don't bring it up. couple glasses of wine. >> if you're going to bring it up get it out early. [laughter] >> one of the issues too is loss this time of the year. so, i remember the first christmas without my mom in 2009 and just looking at that empty seat and thinking oh, it was like a gut punch every time i walked up there. the way i dealt with it was by not talking about it. i don't know if that was so good. >> there is this feeling that you know like, let's do business holiday, and that's going to bring comfort to the person who has lost somebody. having worked with a lot of families in that circumstance more they want that loss acknowledged and honored even if it is brief or a toast or a story or a brief prayer. >> i'm going to start crying right now. [laughter] >> seriously right. we want that acknowledged and even if it is just for a moment you know what i mean it brings us comfort because i lost somebody around the holidays and i know what you mean. like there like i don't want to make everybody uncomfortable. >> or start crying. >> right or start crying, but that's not such a bad thing. that can be okay. >> nobody likes that, but you know what there is, it is cathartic to do that. i like the idea of a toast we did that in our family a prayer and toast. everybody cried. but you know what the rest of the night was so we were all, we felt a release and everybody just then felt like it was okay to celebrate because it was also >> and what i hear sometimes is, that families surprise themselves and is joyful because you end up with stories and celebrating this person in a way you didn't anticipate doing. >> i'm glad you came today. >> she needed this. [laughter] >> thank you john. >> so does everyone else. if you need morehead to dr. john duffy's website, he has great podcasts dr. john duffy.com. there is so much great stuff out there. the holidays are a sensitive time so be sensitive to knows you love >> thanks for having me. >>i like your family too they seem really nice. >> they are you're welcome to come anytime you like. we'll toast to your mom as well. we have a lot more coming up. we know the importance of smart phones. what other mobile device is expected to grow 60% in 2017. up next you can't do new year's without a little sparkle. okay after the break we'll have great tips to give you just the welcome back everybody to the morning blend. where we want to know what is in your makeup bag with merle norman. for some people new year's eve is one of the only times of the year to get dressed up and a little extra fancy. >> that's right. renee hitt and beth frost are intern to be their model. >> let's talk about resolutions this time of year people have skin resolutions beauty resolutions, they got to get their look right for the holiday season. >> they do and the first thing they can do even before they put any makeup on is to do a revitalizing bubbly mask. this is going to help brighten your skin and, you're going to be ending the night with champagne, begin the night with it because it feels like champagne on your fac >> that sounds fantastic. i think this is one of the biggest mistakes women make they don't prep their skin. >> because the skin isn't right right? >> so this is it comes out more like -- >> now just smooth it and leave it alone. then we'll come back to it. >> does it stay on? >> it's already going. >> stop rubbing you don't want it rubbed in you want it nice and thick. >> i love it. so quick. it's like five minutes. >> is this like putting oxygen into your skin a little air bubble? >> uh-huh exactly. there is oxygen bars and things like that for your face this is a great way to prep for the makeup. >> that smells good. >> a little grapefruity maybe. >> it's a flower right? >> yeah. >> let's talk about lips i think a year women feel like i'm going to go with a pop of color i'm going to do a red or berry whatever it may be this is when they do it. >> when you're going to do that pop of color for amanda we stayed nude for her eyes and cheeks then. you want the lip to be the concentrate. you don't want too many competing colors. >> right. so that look right now like we were talking earlier it's a throw back to the 80s. can you use a black or brown. >> yes i was alive for this the first time. we're going to just outline the lip with a matte red liner. >> now we're calling it hombre we used to just call it dark liner. >> right. right. [laughter] >> i like it. >> i remember this look. >> this surreal bright liner you're using. >> yeah. >> all right. >> and then we put kind of a we have these really nice kiss and tell lip glosses. this red velvet is beautiful. >> i can already tell i like it. >> to die for as they say. >> that is pretty. >> so it looks like it's kind of got like a blue cool tone to it. >> it's actually very very neutral. it's one of those reds that every one of us could put that each of us. >> not too chorally not too blue. >> right. >> it's high color and high shine right? >> yeah. >> which is nice. >> how does it feel? >> good. >> that's yours now by the way. [laughter] >> lucky you. >> hey i'm ready. >> then you could even take a little liquid shimmer then. >> let's talk about the liquid shimmer you have because you have got a pinkish one and a gold one right? >> yes. so, the liquid shimmers, we and now we do have the gold hish one. if you like that golden tone -- >> you kind of use it all over the face? >> yeah can you use it on your eyelids, in the cupid's bow, which is that little dip. >> this is cool because i always used it on the high part of my cheek bone. >> you can use it anywhere. >> this is fun. >> that's really fun. >> i like that. >> a nice little glow. >> we also have now the new it with the liquid one. >> can you use this on the brow bone? >> yes you can do it right under. >> that's beautiful. >> which one are you using right there? >> that's the guiding light the gold. this is one of the merle shimmers we have for holiday. the silver and gold come together. >> are those tough to use i sometimes have trouble with the powders getting all over. >> no. >> you mean like flaking on the rest of your makeup? >> yes. >> that and what you do with the shimmer the other one? >> just a little different. this is a little bit higher shine. >> okay. >> yeah show us where you put that. there you go. >> look what it does just in the center of her eye here. there you did the liquid and this is the powder. >> yeah. whenever you layer a powder over a liquid you get much longer wear. >> when you look at her face right there and you see one side to the other she looks perfectly >> like with anything too much is not good either. >> right. >> you want it placed if you walk in a room and you just see a streak of shine, that's not going to, it's going to take away from you. >> okay. >> and while you were talking earlier about the self-esteem issue right, well that's, this is to increase self-esteem. >> absolutely. there any makeup. >> i love i think there is, i love wearing a fun full face of things i think it's a great form of expression and almost an art form as well. but as you mentioned lashes we can't forget those. >> go big or go home. >> what are yours? >> so i kind of do a lot of different things. so i have eye lash extensions and i also have mascara and i also have the false lashes on. >> i love it. >> look straight at the camera it looks beautiful. >> look at those blink once. >> i'm going to create a wind. if are you not doing that your competitors are and you're going to fall behind. >> one of the things you have talked about is the organic of facebook has been diminished. why is that? >> facebook is a business like any other company. if you have a business page and you want your content to be actually seen by the people that like your page you got to pay for it. >> yeah. >> not only do you want it to go to the people that like your page you want to expand your core demographic is. they have excellent tools to be able to do that, but you got to pay for it. >> and you really have been on the forefront of this social media thing because i have been watching you and i know how carefully you look at it. >> it's not a science. a problem a lot of companies have they will go i'm going try some ads for a couple weeks you have to know how to do it. there are a lot of tools and it can become sophisticated to do it to do it the right way to get >> have a professional like you really matters. don't assume mobile means just smart phone. >> exactly. we've been kind of trained that smart phone is the end all be all it is incredibly important, but you got to look at everything else going on. primarily wearables whether it is your apple watch or fit bit or garmin. those types of devices, they are slowly coming out with ways to apple watch. >> how many people are expected, how many more people will be wearing a smart watch? >> they are expecting 60 to 70% increase on the number of people who are going to have these devices. it didn't take off as fast as people thought it was, but it's getting there. from a marketing standpoint how are we going to integrate this and maybe get my message in front of some people that way. >> one of the people is the important of video. you can reach people more impact if you tell a story with pictures. tell us what you are advising companies to do?
