77 with a mixture of brine. that is a mixture of salt and water that prevents ice from bonding to the roads. crews started treating the interstates a couple hours ago. where they started loading up trucks with brine. states have to debris treat a lot of highways so as you can imagine it's a big job. 10,000 gallons of brine will be used to treat the road. all in anticipation of the coming weather. d.o.t. told me it's important drivers will be safe on the road. we spoke by phone. >> reporter: and d.o.t. told me once they are finished pretreating the roads with brine, they will go back know that more snow is on the way to the mountains. even for charlotte we are expecting snow and ice. meteorologist vicki graf has been tracking this winter storm for days and we're almost there. >> ha is right. i've even been getting a couple reports of social media some snow in the mountains. this isn't reaching the ground. that is thanks to dry air in place. that will hold back on the totals as far as snow and ice is concerned. but still a busy afternoon at here you can see here from our camera. a lot of people hitting the slopes this weekend. now that snow, that is all part of this major winter storm system heading our way. and we are seeing several parts to this. this is the first part right now. the main back edge of it is off toward the midwest. and that is going to be heading our way as we head through the over night hours. going through the day today, some snow possible in the mountains. it won't add up to a whole lot but we will keep the clouds around in charlotte and it will stay colder. in fact, temperatures running about 20 degrees colder than where we should be. we haven't made it out of the 20s just yet. the cold air is in place. we're in the teens in the mountains. if you have any plans today, make sure to bundle up. i don't normally show dew points but this is showing you what we are looking at here. dew points measure the amount of moisture in the atmosphere. that is going to hold back on how much snow and ice we see in the meantime, today cloudy skies. mid 30s. a cold and dry day here in the charlotte area. if you center plans this evening for valentine's day, pack the layers. by can we'll be in the upper 20s. for your morning commute that is when we are tracking the threat for snow. this will not add up to a whole lot and by 9:00 it starts to switch over to the wintery mix. here's the thing, we're not expecting a lot of snow and ice, but this is still when you head out for your morning drive. and as kids are hitting the bus stop. so not exactly the prime time we need to be seeing any type roads. as we go through the day tomorrow, we will keep the clouds around. here's 4:00. you can see a few snow flurries in and around the charlotte area. by 7:00 where you see this area shaded in pink, that will be a little bit of sleet and freezing rain. even though this looks like it's very wide spread, this is not going to be a big event by the morning hours. snow in the mountains, the it will not add up to a whole lot but there is still that potential especially for the first part of the day. by the evening it switches over to rain and heavier rain monday into tuesday. so monday afternoon a rain event but we're looking at the morning as when we could see the biggest problems on the roadways. as far as how much snow we're going to see, this has drastically changed from this time yesterday. less than half an inch of snow in charlotte. up to an inch to two inches along the i-40 corridor. when you factor in the ice mixing in, not quite as much. but we could see about a tenth of an inch in some spots. we'll be watching it as we go throughout the day today. john will have more updates at 6:00 but there is that potential for
