3 mark tight governor mcauliffe spent the day touring the areas hit by yesterdays tornados this is a picture he tweeted out earlier as he saw the damage from a helicopter. Annie andersen is live in the evergreen area of appomattox right now with more. Annie satlive before touring the damage here in appomattox, mcauliffe surveyed the area in his helicopter. Once on houses talking to people. Many of whom lost everything. Mcauliffe also met with phil hysell of the National Weather service who says that this storm had gusts of 120 miles per hour. Mcauffe said after seeing the damage, that really wasnt a surprise. Sot mcauliffe 12 we saw a lot of debris in trees. But you see an area with a bunch of people out on the ground going trying to find some treasured memento and hoping they can recover something annie satlive sadly after natural disasters we always see people trying to take advantage of the people who lost everything. I asked mcauliffe how they plan to keep that from happening. He said they already have people on the ground watching out for that. Police say the toddlers mother was also in the trailer governor mcauliffe met privately with several relatives of the victims. He says the family lost everything and does not have money to bury the child. The National Weather Service Rated that tornado as an ef1, with wind speeds of 100 to 110 miles per hour. Katie liveu noreen, these teams of First Responders have been working since the moment the tornado hit. Theyve gone door to door, making sure anyone missing is accounted for. The final tally one fatality, 78 year old keith 7 people. 5 of them are home from the hospital tonight. Captain susan walton of the appomattox rescue squad says two of their own ems workers lost their homes. She says the last 24 hours have been overwhelming and tough to deal with. Another task theyre dealing with getting generators to those without power who need oxygen or taking them to shelters but theyre grateful for the help of so Many Organizations helping them get this monumental job done. 06 susan walton, captain, appx rescue squad, were going through all of the rubble to ensure that no one is entrapped and making sure that everyone thats injured gets taken to the hospital. Katie liveu the appomattox rescue squad says the best thing you can do is stay at home and away from affected areas. Although it may be tempting to drive around and look at the scenes but it really causes traffic problems and keeping rescue now that everyone is safe. Putting lives back together is the next hurdle.
