today. president trump facing immediate fallout after his firing of fbi director james comey. trump said the move was a necessary one to restore public confidence. >> but it's casting a large shadow over the russia investigation and where it goes from here. lawmakers are questioning the timing of the firing. democrats are calling for a special council to lead the russia inquiry. >> and trump is sitting down in the oval office with russia's foreign minister. we have complete converage on al of this. let's go to peter alexander at the white house. >> reporter: goo to be clear, this was a shocking move. the shock waves reverberating. president trump firing james comey, who was leading the investigation into the possible ties between president trump's campaign aides and the kremlin. the decision the white house says was based on the recommendation of two men, jeff sessions, who planned to recuse himself from the russia investigation. he had no comments to reporters. and the deputy attorney general, only two weeks on the job. overnight, fired fbi director james comey, returning to washington, after his dramatic dismissal, by president trump. >> there's james. he's become more famous than me. >> reporter: less than three months after publicly embracing comey, the president who built his brand on the catchphrase, you're fired, insisted he . >> reporter: that dismissal letter hand delivered to fbi head quarters by the long security head, keith shiller. comey learning about his fate when it flashed on a tv as he addressed employees. comey laughed thinking it was a prank before aides pulled him into a nearby office. the reaction from capitol hill to the surprise announcement? fast and furious. >> comey was not fired because of hillary. comey was fired because of the russians. >> reporter: this memo from the deputy attorney general who oversees the fbi details why comey was fired, blasting the handling of the conclusion of the hillary clinton e-mail investigation has wrong, writing as a result the fbi is unlikely to regain public and congressional trust. until it has a director who understands the gravity of the mistakes and pledges never to repeat them. but candidate trump praised the handling of the clinton probe. >> i was not his fan, but what he did, he brought back his reputation. he brought it back. >> i have the fact that director comey was able to come back after what he did. and it took guts for director comey to make the move that he made. >> reporter: the white house now pushing back on the previous comments. >> it has nothing to do with the campaign from six months ago. this has everything to do with the performance the fbi director since the president has been in the white house. >> reporter: the president's letter also claims the fbi director inform himd on three separate occasions he was not under investigation for ties to russia. when asked, white house aides couldn't identify those occasions. sean spicer defending the decision. >> this is a decision that should have been shared by most democrats, chuck schumer, nancy pelosi, all of them talked about how the director lost their confidence. >> reporter: instead, they're demanding answers on russia. >> if an independent special prosecutor is appointed, there can be some faith tha if not, everyone will suspect coverup. >> reporter: mr. trump firing back saying i don't have confidence in comey anymore. then acts to indignant. some republicans are critical too. among them, richard burr. he's the chair of the senate intelligence committee heading up the russia investigation. he called it a loss for the bureau and the nation. a senior aide at the white house last night telling us it's time to move on from the russia investigation. and as you mentioned, the president today just a single event on his public schedule. it's a meeting in the oval office with survey -- sergey lavrov. let's bring in pete willi s williams. by all accounts, this was a stunner. what is the mood inside the fbi this morning? >> reporter: total shock. nobody saw this coming. thew comey's testimony last week about the clinton e-mail investigation allowed him to make the public explanation that he wanted. that he'd finally gotten behind him. he had no idea this was coming. there's a strong feeling the way he found out about it seeing it on a room full of tv screens in los angeles was at the least undignified. many agents were unhappy with how he ran the clinton e-mail investigation, but he was generally popular and well respected inside the fbi, and only once before has president fired an fbi director. bill clinton filed william sessions in 1993 over concerns that sessions was using government money for personal purposes. now the man who was the deputy fbi director, the 21-year veteran of the fbi becomes the acting director. he's somebody who had the confidence of james comey because comey picked him to be his number the russia investigation keeps going out of the counterintelligence division. the firing of comey cast a big cloud over it. pete, thank you. >> we are joined now by a former fbi special agent and former consultant of the counterterrorism division of the fbi. good morning. >> good morning. >> let me follow up with what they were just talking about. give me your knowledge of people been the bureau who think it resulted from the e-mail investigation or the russia investigation? >> i would estimate that they think it's the russia investigation. there have been months where the trump administration could have fired comey over the clinton e-mail investigation. they chose not to. and this is when the grand jury is issuing subpoenas that relate to the flynn investigation which is part of this trump conspiracy with russia. so it's ominous timing. i don't think any fbi agent in the fbi today would think this is an in action that president trump needed to undertake. >> if it's about the investigation into hillary clinton and her e-mails. the handling of that investigation is being looked into. why wouldn't you wait until the results come in before you would make this move? >> i think it's because it's an emotional decision. if you saw president clinton when he had to fire the fbi director, he waited for an investigation to come forward and used it for cause. this is the weakest cause case out there. it makes no sense not to go ahead and wait for the ethics investigation to be completed. >> as a practical matter, what happens to the russia investigation now. we heard pete say it continues. but if a new fbi director comes in and is presumably hand picked by donald trump, can that fbi director shut it down? can that person slow walk it? as a practical matter,wh investigation? >> there's three things we should look at. one, the fbi agents doing the russia investigation will do what they planned to do. they're not going to strap. the real gap, the second thing is charges have to go to a grand jury. that has to be pushed to the department of justice. who is impartial there that would have an open mind about this? we just saw where the doj under sessions now who said he refused himself, is probably not going to be open to charges being pushed on the russia investigation. and the president signalled in his own letter that there was nothing to be looking for, nothing to be looking at in terms of the russia investigation. whoever he appoints, whoever the new fbi director is, they could come in and reprioritize on what president trump wants rather than what's good for the nation. >> clint, thank you very much. let's bring in nicole wallace and ari. on the does this rank? >> it's huge. >> let's see the devil's advocate. i think a lot of people will want to give the president the benefit of the doubt. why is it not a reasonable rationale that he's unhappy with the way comey handled the hillary clinton e-mail investigation, something that many career prosecutors and many democrats also found fault with? what's the rationale? >> there were procedural problems with the way director comey handled the investigation, but the letter from this doj under donald trump says the main problem was that the approach by director comey was essentially too mean to hillary clinton. that is at odds with everything the candidate said. it's also at odds with what jeff sessions said at the time. >> and by the way, nicole, if you want to fire james comey over the hillary clinton e-mail investigation, you could do it on day one as president. you don't have to wait five months. let me read you a portion of the wrote to director comey. while i greatly appreciate you informing me on three separate occasions that i'm not under investigation, i nevertheless concur with the department of justice that you're not able to effectively lead the bureau. what does that mean? >> it means no one has successfully reigned in donald trump from his impulses to carry on as if he's the ceo of the apprentice. you saw it at the beginning of the week, sally yates was fired for not enforcing the muslim ban. no one believes that's all that was going on. when people refuse to fall into line, and this should send a chill and wake up every republican who thinks it's okay to go along. the fact that democrats are james comey's defenders this morning, most of them believe we have a president trump because of james comey's handling of the e-mails. >> it's interesting to see the on the one hand the white house is saying this is all about the hillary clinton e-mail investigation. and president trump's own letter betrays the fact that it is about russia. that that's at top of mind. >> we can give them the benefit of the doubt. but the fact that they thought they could turn the page on russia by removing the head of the fbi while the fbi is investigating russia guarantees it will be a burning focus. >> and the president has made an admission of a stunning level in that letter that you're both pointing to. because the doj is trying to create neutral regions that has nothing to do with russia. and donald trump in writing that sentence that he couldn't hold back on is raising his criminal reliability. he inserted himself and russia into what they claim was a neutral policy decision. >> from a communications perspective, i think you laid it out. if you wanted to draw attention to russia, this seems like tl for russia. >> what they've done is now everyone has to choose. if you care about getting to the bottom of the questions about russian mettling in 2016 which we know graham and mccain said they care about. and if you care about having a nonpolitical fbi director, you must have an fbi director that promises to get to the bottom of that investigation between trump's orbit and russia. >> and you by the year 2024. that deadline was the year 2042 was the department of energy didn't think there was any danger of tunnel collapse. it was a massive alarm. thousands of workers the sheltering in place. for hours those workers forced to stay inside this sprawling nuclear reservation half the size of rhode island after a hole was discovered in a hole used to bury radio active waste. a robot sent in to inspect the collapsed area. after no contamination was detected most employees were sent home. others began repairing the tunnel and filling the hole with clean soil. the watchdog groups say tunnels like this one and thousands of tons are nuclear waste are disasters waiting to happen. an earthquake in this area could be catastrophic. >> the entire northwest could be put at incredible nuclear waste storage tanks were linked to health concerns. this week fishofficials say a cs was averted here. others say it's a warning for nuclear sites nationwide. >> if you just have continued degradati degradation, you have the potential for one after another very serious accidents. >> currently they receive over $1 billion a year waste cleanup without addressing the tunnels. right now fight between two passengers. now, the brawl broke out last weekend on a southwest flight. it had just landed in california. not clear why the men were fighting, but police say there was a verbal exchange before they started throwing punches. a witness says the flight attendant did her best to try to break up the fight. her efforts were praised by the airline. one of the passengers was arrested for batter ri. the other man suffered an eye contusion, a cut on his nose and a chipped tooth. the incident is less than a week after another fight on a plane in tokyo. friendly skies, they people and injured about 200 others will not be charged. they say they can't prove he acted with 106 miles per hour on a 50-miles per hour curve. they concluded he lost track of his location. they found no evidence that he was under the influence of drugs or alcohol or distracted by his cell phone. now a scary moment in south carolina. a school bus with 56 students on it engulfed in flames. two kids in the back of the bus alerted the driver. it took the driver less than a minute to get everyone off. no one was hurt. the cause of the fire is under investigation. and as savannah said, president trump's firing of james comey sending shock waves throughout washington. a number of democrats and republicans are questioning that move. comey was leading the investigation into possible collusion between the trump campaign and russian officials during the campaign. so the president's decision sparked new calls to the special prosecutor be appointed. peter alexander is at the white is still digesting the fallout over the firing of james comey. president trump on twitter now vowing he will make a great pick to replace comey, and adding comey lost the confidence of almost everyone in washington. republican and democrat alike. when things calm down, trump writes, they will be thanking me. james comey himself landed back here in d.c. overnight after learning about his dismissal during an fbi recruiting event. he was in l.a. the headlines broke on the tv behind him. initially we're told he thought it was a prank. the white house saying the president acting on the recommendations the attorney general, that's jeff sessions, and his deputy attorney general who blasted comey's conduct during the 2016 election and his public statements surrounding the investigation in the hillary clinton e-mails as a, quote, textbook example as wh prosecutors and agents are taught not to do. the president has a single event at the white house today. it is a meeting to take place in the oval office with sergey lavrov, the foreign minister of russian. president trump we're told called comey's number at the fbi, a career prosecutor by the name of andy mckab. he brought him to the white house. after an oval office meeting, he named him the fbi director even though he's the one who oversaw the fbi's investigation into hillary clinton's e-mails. >> all right. pete, thank you. the latest on the case of alleged hazing that rocked penn state. eight more members of the fraternity were arraigned on tuesday. >> the indictments have reveals a detailed time line of how the night unfolded. in a moment we'll talk to the university's president as well as the district attorney in the case. first, here's gosk. >> reporter: 8:56 p.m. the gauntless begins. surveillance video shows pledges shotgun beers and drink from bottles of vodka. at 10:45 p.m. timothy is staggering toward the basement steps. brothers say they heard him fall down the stairs. he's carried upstairs to the couch. his and has a large bruise. surveillance video shows a backpack is placed on his back so he doesn't roll over. one brother the testified at 11:14 he demanded they take piazza to the hospital. he's shoved to the wall and asked to leave. at 11:25, the pledge master slaps piazza three times in the face. 1 around. tim might be a problem. he fell down the stairs. going to need help. nothing happened. brothers say they saw him vomit and twitch at 1:00 a.m. between 3:00 and 5:00 in the morning, he tries to get up but falls three more times. the last time into an iron railing and a door. by 5:15 a.m. he's been repeatedly ignored and at least twice stepped over. at 6:57 a growning piazza is filmed. the video later posted on snap chat. at 7::18 he stands for a final time and staggers toward the basement. at 10:00 a.m., he's found there. he's described as cold to the touch and pale. his eyes half open. for 42 minutes, brothers try to shake him awake and try to dress him. one brother googled cold extremities in a drunk person. at 10:48 a.m., 12 hours after he first fell, 9-1-1 is called. >> we have a friend who's unconscious. >> reporter: for "today," stephanie gosk, nbc was under better circumstances. no one should have to deal with this kind of tragedy. no family. >> i think we all agree on that. and when you hear what we heard and read the description of what happened to this young man over a period of 12 plus hours, it literally makes you sick to your stomach. my question is is this a wakeup call for penn state university? are you willing to acknowledge that whatever the university was doing to govern this fraternity and all fraternities, it hasn't been >> so i would say this is very clearly a national problem. we've had tens of deaths across the nation. we have university president large, small, private, public, trying to deal with this problem. you know that if you have a society which is secret which from all outward appearances is incredibly positive, these brothers signed a pledge that if they were caught drinking, they would be expelled. they have faculties a visors, a beautiful house, cameras. there were no external parties. if behind closed doors a group of people are willing to ban together, keep something secret, not the tell anyone, how is it that universities can manage to deal with a situation like that? it's private property. but i will tell you this. we're not going to give up until we either solve the problem or shut down every house that's out there. >> it's a problem, and it's a difficult position for someone in your role. however, i think there are a lot of people who are sitting there and thinking the university just turned a blind eye. they know what really goes on in these fraternities and they allow it. >> okay. we have been working on this for more than a decade. we began with a lot of educational programs. then mandatory educational programs. then response programs if we had an incident. then we worked on team approaches to get everybody involved, all the partners involved. then we go to a task force that looks at america schisms where we can see something happening ahead of time. but the only real tool we have in the tool box is to take away the recognition for because you have to remember that it's private property. it's a private house. it's privately managed. it has a national organization that is involved there. it has alumni boards there, and the only tool that penn state has to be effective is to say you're no longer a student organization. >> and i should mention that penn state has done that with regard to the from a tern thety -- fraternity in question here. tamerlin tsarnaev let you -- i have to let you go. we're out of time. >> one last thing. beta will never morning. >> with all respect to the president of the college, is he ignoring something well known on the campus of penn state? was this a secret kept right out in the open? >> well, i will say this. the grand jury is going to go on and issue a report and recommendation about who knew what and when. and when that report comes out, i think it's going to answer all of those questions. >> what about the culture and the climate of alcohol abuse at fraternities on penn state? >> well, as the presentment showed, this behavior particularly with this fraternity has gone back quite a period of time. and we have found at least on just the cell phones that they have been doing it for semester after semester after semester. and i think the report and recommendation is going to open a lot of eyes about who knew what. because it's the grand jury report and recommendation, it has to come to fruition before the details can be released. i think it's going to be surprising to people who what. >> district attorney parks miller, i think every parent needs to go and read this timeline. you should go and read the timeline. as disturbing as it is, it is so illuminate as to what happened inside that fraternity. i'm curious how you came up with the threshold in terms of people who were actively involved in the drinking, hazing ritual and people who simply ignored the desperate condition of this young man. how did you decide who to charge and who not to charge? >> well, as you know, we worked with the grand jury, and they made the recommendation for charging which we supported after they heard scores of testimony. but for manslaughter you have to find that reckless behavior led to the death. in this case the theory begins with preplanning an event that gets you to a fatal level of alcohol which leads directly to event and participated. >> one of the young men said the government assumes these young men, many of whom were intoxicated themselves should have been able to differentiate symptoms of extreme fox kags to symptoms of a threatening head injury. >> that's mistating pennsylvania law and it's a copout. personal responsibility lives in my county. again, reckless death begins and ends when they serve these young man as part of a condition to be in a fraternity, fatal levels of alcohol. that's the reckless conduct that led to the death. ignoring signs of his injury compounds it. it starts when they decide to get these young men fatally drunk, risking death. that begins the manslaughter. the rest of it just compounds it. >> the parents of the tim, do they see allf those who forced him to drink and those who ignored his condition? >> i'm sure, yes. and i'm sure personally outside of the legal realm which is our job to assign responsibility, they see personally everybody who did not help him as responsible, and morally they're probably not wrong. >> all right. stacey parks-miller, thank you for your time this morning. >> thank you for having me. >> after 9/11, going through security can be stressful. the it's not as pleasant as it used to be. >> it's a stressful environment. you're not going there for fun. >> people's patience level seeps to be zero when they show up at the gate. >> the limits are the tested in many ways. >> i'm a believer that we all contribute to the situation in some way, passengers, flight crew. what do you think are some things that passengers could be doing differently? >> rushing to get on the plane and sort of people pushing you from the back. that starts it off. >> people are like it's a 15 hour flight, and there's this crowd and n this big metal tube in the air. >> seat belted in so close to strangers, and some behaviors can be offensive. >> probably experienced was a woman brushing her teeth and sucking on her toothbrush the entire flight. >> people don't notice their feet smell and they take off their shoes. it smells like that for the rest of the time. >> where do you come down an taking your shoes off? >> no no taking your shoes off. if you wear flip-flops, that's fine, but even that, it would be nice to not crush your legs so your foot is not in the other person's lap. >> what about reclining your seat? >> i say go for it. if the person in front of me does it. it's a domino effect. >> never. never. >> why? >> if you recline your seat one centimeter, it makes my flight 35% more uncomfortable. and so i try to pass that same courtesy on to the person behind. >> there was little debate over who gets two armrests. >> the middle passenger. they don't have the space. >> middle seat person. gets both. >> the guy in the middle. what's he going to do? >> i'm kind of surprised. >> we know you do so much for the community and we're so grateful for you. we wanted to surprise you here today. >> i'm definitely surprised. >> reporter: fantastic, while we make our way to the gym, we'll let everybody at home get a look at your inspiring story. well, thank you. >> reporter: take a look. welcome to hemphill. >> this is considered the texas, the further you can go before you hit louisiana. the bean county is the 16th tourist county. we have the highest unemployment rate in the state of texas. >> reporter: the population just over 1,000. in a rural area like this, books can take you outside of what you know, and they teach you so much about the world. >> reporter: shelly star knows the importance of books in children's lives. >> i like the shark book that's over there and the lego book with the lego person. >> reporter: for the last seven year she's been the elementary, middle school, and high school librarian. on tuesday he ate through two pair but he was still hungry. >> i start in the elementary library and check in books and >> this is my favorite place in the school. >> reporter: in addition to her daily tasks, device a year she hosts a book fair. the hope is each child can bring book home to read with their family and keep them. early on shelly realized financial hardships prevented kids from buying books. >> sometimes kids come in and have a few pennies and want to buy a book. my volunteers would start buying books for the kids. it's heart breaking. we keep digging in our own pockets to make it work for these kids. we couldn't keep up with the demand. >> reporter: determined to make su sure every child to who wanted a book had one, she reached out to the community. >> i made a facebook post. within about 20 minutes, i had a man handing me a $100 bill. >> the book fair is supported by the community, foreigner students and strangers. for her students and raising awareness about the needs. >> she goes above and beyond. >> she tries to get to those who may not be interested in reading, but get them interesting in picking out books they would like to read. >> this book is about a boy named billy, and his horse named blaze. >> there's a lot of books, and you can explore more if you keep reading. >> news about the fair travels quickly through their small town. neighbors encouraging other neighbors to pitch in. >> they are very proud of it. it's in the newspapers. and people talk about it at churches. >> but shelly and her community still have work to do. and like any determined educator, she won't stop until every child's needs are met. >> we would love to see every kid be able to get a book from the book fair and take books home. >> okay. mrs. star, behind these doors is a great surprise. are you ready?
