Taken along the way, including no specific mention of the muslim ban, chuck todd. You know, lester, i thought it was an extraordinarily dark speech. There are going to be Many Americans who say hes describing i dont recognize that america. There are going to be others that say that is what i think i see or that is what i think i feel. But it was dark. Obviously he used the words law and order or law and talked about restoring those things. It was a dominant part of the speech. In fact it was interesting, he used some form of the words law and order or lawfulness 18 times. By contrast, the two biggest buzz words of the conservative movement for the last two years have been freedom and liberty. He never uttered the word liberty and only uttered the word freedom once. Greeting mike pence now, his Vice President ial running mate and the pence family as the trump and pence families meet there on the stage. Tom brokaw, your thoughts. This unlikely journey but tonight it was delivered on steroids. People in this hall see him as a man on a white horse that will lead them to say sanctuary and pull the drawbridge up behind him. Others see him as a demagogue of some kind. He kept talking back to the themes of were going to win, were going to crack down on terror, crack down on law and order. And Hillary Clinton, until she took office as secretary of state, the middle east was a land of milk and honey until she raised her hand and accepted that office. That will be a very hard sell. But obviously he has teed up who he wants to. Ive been doing this a long time. I have never witnessed somebody who came from where he did got to this place used the language that he did to run for president of the united states. You cannot underestimate, however, we are playing by different rules now. Social media, his fans and social media wille this tonight and help promote donald trump. Fireworks going off over lake erie in unison with the balloons now dropping over the quicken loans arena. Nicolle, i mentioned coming out that there was not a specific muslim ban as we heard. He changed it to suspend immigration to countries with terror. How significant is that . Its a significant pivot but it might be the only one. I was struck by two things i always believed during my two decades in republican politics. One, the voters always get it right, and two, the Republican Party that i worked for for two decades died in this room tonight. We are now represented as a party by a man who believes in protectionism, isolationism and nativism. And those were the forces that george w. Bush and john mccain too were most worried about during their times as leaders of the Republican Party. You believe the partyd guy. This is where the Republican Party is now. They now are attracted to those forces of isolationism and protectionism. The party i was part of for two decades is dead. Part of the reason hes successful, on the other hand, is a lot of people believe that that party didnt deliver and it created the system that were dealing with today, that it became absorbed in raising a lot of money and advancing the individual Office Holders who were there. And lets just say they think it failed. Yeah. They think that the policies of the bush era failed. Lets look at it this way, though we could be in a transformational moment in politics. He set pretty High Expectations by saying hes going to make the borders secure. These are huge promises hes made. I think im so curious to see how this speech is received. In the room i think it was incredibly compelling and the people loved it but it really comes down to which in. Right. On the one hand you have him giving a bill of particulars that is downright dark, its ominous. I kept thinking about the lego movie theme song, everything is awesome. This was everything was awful. If you think you believe in this america, if that resonates and is true to you, this will appeal. I have to tell you, though, i was struck at how Big Government this speech is. This is a big, strong government that donald trump, the republican nominee, and very expensive. He didnt say how he was going to pay for any of this, but hes got Bernie Sanders free college in there, hes got a lot of things in there. All these roads and bridges and hes massively cutting taxes. I dont know how he pays for any of this. They often say that you campaign in poetry, you govern in prose. If this was poetry, i dont know what prose is going to be. I did go back and look at Ronald Reagans acceptance speech when he was nominated in 1980. You still have the core values of the Republican Party but he opened by saying im going to work with governors to protect the right of women. Who did he quote most of all in this speech . Fdr, Franklin Roosevelt during the depression. We are going to continue to watch this celebration in the hall and take a short break. The picture will remain on the screen. Well be right back. It was a campaign that many had once written off as a joke, a publicity stunt. But tonight donald trump came into this hall here in cleveland and claimed the nomination as the republican candidate for president. The celebration continuing here at the quicken loans arena. We should note that it was the longest speech, longest acceptance speech in modern times. I believe we go back to 1972. Thats correct. There was one that long. But the theme again in his speech tonight, america first. That is going to do it for the fourth and final night of our coverage of the Republican National convention in cleveland. We hope you will join us next week. We all move on to philadelphia, the Democratic Convention there. For now for chuck todd, savannah guthrie, nicolle wallace, tom brokaw and our entire nbc news team, im lester holt. Good night from cleveland. My husband is ready to this great nation. Vote your conscience, vote s up and down the ticket who you trust. This team is ready. Our party is ready. News 4 at 11 00 starts now. Our convention occurs at a moment of crisis for our nation. Any politician who does not grasp this danger is not fit to lead our country. Hes the nominee nobody saw coming. Now donald trump is the standard trump laid out his vision tonight for the next four years with him in the white house that includes a serious clamping down on immigration and what trump called law and order. Good evening. Im doreen against lgentzler. Im jim handly. We have Live Team Coverage from cleveland, d. C. And virginia, starting with news 4s Steve Handelsman in cleveland. Steve . Reporter good evening. Wrapping up this unusual but now normal looking rnc in cleveland, donald trump did not wing this speech. Too much at stake in the one hour plus long address in which he accepted the nomination. Trump alluded to recent horrific events and said to make America Great he must and he knows he must make america safe. In his most watched speech, donald trump rallied republicans. The and we will lead our country back to safety, prosperity and peace. With his wife melania watching, trump told voters he sees a law and order crisis. Any politician who does not grasp this danger is not fit to lead our country. Besides building his wall and banning muslims, another specific, trump vowed to turn to the tough prosecutors and cops that americans want. I have a message for all of you, the crime and violence that today afflicts our nation will soon and i mean very soon come to an end. Reporter believe my dad, he can do it, was the message earlier of ivanka trump. My father not only has the strength and ability necessary to be our next president , but also the kindness and compassion that will enable him to be the leader that this co reporter to make america rich, donald trump vows to redo trade deals, lower taxes, and lessen regulation to grow the u. S. Middle class. These are people who work hard, but no longer have a voice. I am your voice. Reporter he is definitely the voice of republicans, who hope this convention helps unite their party behind donald trump. Heading out now with his running mate mike pence to do battle with Hillary Clinton, trump declared that clinton would make america more unsafe and less prosperous. Live from the rnc in cleveland, im Steve Handelsman reporting. Thank you, steve. There were several watch parties around our region tonight. Jackie bensen want to see what voters in d. C. And Northern Virginia think about donald trump and even among republicans, there was some disagreement tonight. Parties are often a little different here in the d. C. Area than they are in other places. Jellybeans, photos of notable republican president s, and a funeral wreath, a group that included current and former republican staffers gathered at the dubliner on capitol hill for what was billed as an irish wake for the Republican Party. There are dozens of exgop stop from the administration and the hill and president ial campaigns and the Party Institutions who are coming tonight because they all agree that this is not a normal election. And this is not a normal candidate running for office, and we as republicans have a responsibility to stand up and say this is not acceptable, this is not our party. Reporter across the Potomac River in arlington, members of the Arlington Falls Church young republicans and arlington Republican Party gathered to speech. In the d. C. Area, president ial elections are both politics and business. If more people were as involved as we are in this room, i think you would have higher voter turnout and more of a representative style government as opposed to what a lot of people claim and dont vote and then you end up in a situation that if you dont vote, you cant complain. Were very much in the business of politics. A lot of us are. So, yeah, it is very personal, very interesting thing, so when you get to this happening, you get a lot of people showing up. Reporter and obviously a late night for all those who attended the beach party. Jackie, thank you. Now that the rnc is over, all eyes are on Hillary Clinton and the democrats. Tonight, speculation is growing that clinton could make virginia senator tim kaine her pick for Vice President. We caught up with the senator at a couple of events in Northern Virginia today. Kaine talked about immigration and religious freedom with a everywhere he went he was followed by questions about potentially joining the president ial ticket. It is kind of surreal, yeah. Im glad i sort of went through it eight years ago, just because i understand the kind of rhythm of the thing, but he mentioned has no connection with anything. Whether hes the vp nominee or not, we learned today that senator kaine will join Virginia Governor terry mccauliff, Eleanor Holmes norton and Martin Omalley as speakers at next weeks convention. We have been bringing you Live Team Coverage from the rnc all week long. Trying to get a feel for the response of local delegates in cleveland. Here tonight we heard donald trump talk specifically about washington, d. C. Homicides last year increased by 17 in americas 50 largest cities. Thats the largest increase in 25 years. In killings have risen by 50 . Lets get some new reaction to that story now and the rest of this whirlwind week. News 4s Chris Lawrence and tom sherwood live at quicken loans arena. Something we have been covering obviously for the past few months. We had our checked and the city Officials Say homicides are down 9 , down 9 from the same period of time in 2015. No question homicides have been up across the river and across the river, it is the very serious issue. And the mayor we asked the mayor for comment today, and it is a big issue, says shes been trying to get her hands around. And also, you have to also put that in context as well, that Violent Crime in major cities is historically down, compared to its peak in the late 80s and 90s. Nearly 500 people were being killed and dropped down to under mayor gray, i think 2011, 88, with one murder too many. Even so, the increase in murder is not nearly what it was portrayed here tonight. Thats the old reputation of the city. Jim, doreen . All right, thank you, both. And well have the dnc covered for you all next week.
