alternate transportation options. not everyone can and say they will just deal with the longer than expected waits at the crowded lcrowd platforms. p take a listen. >> hopefully as little impact as possible. coming back in the evening at a much different time. so probably 45 minute delay coming home at night. >> reporter: joining me now here at the ballston station is the general manager paul weiedefeld. we're an hour into the system opening. >> this will be the beginning of a very long year for us and our customers to catch up with what we have to do. but what i've heard from the customers so far, they're reacting and planning ahead, whichfa started their day earlier than they normally do, which is perfect to spread out the peak a little bit. >> i know one of the things you wanted to do was appoint a point person for safetrack. have you done that? >> miss laura mason, she comes to us from -- she has an engineering degree from duke, mba from stanford. >> and her job? >> to wake up think about this project and every night think about this project. she will coordinate all the activity, make sure everything is in place that needs to be, communicating obviously with the customers. everything. it will be her baby. >> so smooth sailing thus far. we'll keep an eye on things as you go around this morning to that, as well. thank you very much paul wiedefeld, general manager here at metro. now we want to check things out at the east falls church station. that is where kristin wright is this morning. >> reporter:. first i want to show you my he's from metro. he is passing out these flyers this morning to riders about safetrack, letting them know what they can expect and what do. it's still early, so i think things here are just fine at this point. but we went down to the platform just a few minutes ago, just a few riders really a handful of people waiting. about 10 or so. we stopped several people to ask, hey, did you change your routine because of metro's safetrack program. all of them, every single one said yes. they're here earlier. one guy we talked to heading to work has been waiting and waiting for his train, though, and he does say that the time up on the sign keeps changing. so the real test i think begins now. back here live at 6:00, free shuttles as i mentioned are coming and are going to start at about 6:30 this morning here to alleviate some of the delays and cop gue congestion we hope. but i believe the real test begins now. >> kristin, t now live to the roads. derrick ward is tracking the traffic impacts. how is it looking? >> reporter: route 66 now just east of leesburg pike, we're starting to run into a backup here. of course this is one of the usual backups that you will see on 66. we're nearing the metro station. this one looks like it lasts pretty well into i'd say, oh, maybe a couple miles or or so. but this is what you expect on route 66 at this hour in the morning. nothing untoward yet and i think time will bear out whether more people take to the roads. derrick ward, news 4. to accommodate the extra traffic because of metro safetrack program, ddot is implementing parking restrictions. they will extend morning and evening rush hours by 30 minutes monday through friday on certain busy corridors. that means there will be emergency signs are posted letting you know when you can and cannot park in any particular place. metro officials urging commute commuters to use bus as much as possible. both metrobus and fairfax connector will add rush hour trips in areas affected by metro safetrack program. to find a route that works best for you, open the nbc washington app and search safetrack. if you need another option to help you get to work, wood bridge oig man is creating new slug line sites at peak hours. >> the driver can drive on the expressway quicker, not sitting in the traffic or taking the local roads. that helps reduce the time. >> there is also an app that lets you know in real time whether slugs or drivers are available. to get to the app, go to the nbc washington app and search this is the first day of metro's safetrack program and a lot of people looking for alternative ways. ubering one of them. we've monitored the app this morning and we found that there is surge pricing already in place. we're looking at 1.3 times the normal rate. in the last hour, there were times where we couldn't get an uber if we wanted within. remember to share your experience and use #safetrack. the commute may not be so great for a lot of you this morning, but the walk to your metro derrick ward now live on the roads for us. >> you're on 66 right now heading into the city. are you seeing traffic there right now? >> reporter: 66 eastbound heading toward route 29. and things look pretty good. we're coming through falls church now. again, this is typical of route 66 traffic. we haven't been in any stand still. just been some slowing. so typical volume. nothing up toward that we can see now. you might expect that if there is any adverse affect on the roads because of operation safetrack, we'd probably see it here. haven't seen it yet. but the morning is young. back to you. by a train. laurel police tell us a csx train struck the man near la fayette avenue. the train was empty at the time. police have not told us the man's name or why they believe he was on the tracks. they did say that he was 25 years old, we're also told trains are back up and running on those tracks at this hour. this morning we're working to find out more about a deadly shooting in the district. here's what we do though. a man was shot the shooting happened on 53rd street near c street. d.c. police have not released the man's name. we also don't have any word on a suspect in the case. search teams are prepare to go go back on the potomac river to look for robert lee and lawrence gray jr., missing boaters. witnesses first called mrs. after they saw one of those men clinging to a branch they're poi they're point of rocks. the search picks back up again morning. the only baltimore police officer facing a murder charge goes on trial this week. officer goodson odrove the van where they say gracious takened the spinal injury that killed him. goodson is said to have had the primary responsibility for y' that carry as maximum of 30 years in prison. motions in his case begin today. today jury deliberations continue in a rape case. antwon pitt is accused of sexually assaulting a mother back in october. pitt is also accused of committing a string of crimes over two week including cutting off his ankle monitor while on probation before that attack. 6:17. this morning muhammad ali is back home. his body is back in louisville, kentucky, his hole up to, where they are planning a the business has died. david gilkey and his interpreter died yesterday in southern afghanistan. gilkey is on the right of this picture. he was on assignment for national public radio when his convoy parker and adam ward died last year, they were on assignment when roanoke police say a disgruntled former co-worker opened fire and killed them. parker and ward are among 20 journalists whose names will be added to the newseum's memorial wall in a special ceremony at 10:00. first of three men arrested for last week was arraigned on sunday. police say ernest coleman helped kill mitchell. the boy's body was found in a field on thursday. they also have gregory walker and ray portis in custody. they say more charges are expected against those men as this investigation continues. it is going to cost a little more this week to fill up at the pump. gas prices are up 6 cents since the end of may, but they're still nearly 50 cents cheaper than they were this time last year. the national average for a gavel regular gas is $2.36. d.c.'s average price is a little higher at $2.52. in maryland, it 2.34 and in virginia, $2.20. some good news on the other side of the country. firefighters are making a lot of progress in a wildfire in southern california. at this point it's about 80% contained. the fire damaged several buildings. it thousands more. we don't know the extent of the northbound into montgomery county. hardly a cloud to be found. looking southbound, still a couple of clouds down across parts of southern maryland and the northern neck. so for today then, a little less humid than it was over the weekend, otherwise just warm and sunny. tomorrow a chance of a few afternoon showers, but rain chances tomorrow only stand at 30%. next best chance for rain looks to be come you are our way on saturday. but don't panic just yet. rain well out to our south and east for the remainder of the day. current temperatures are in the 60s to near 70. 70 downtown, 68 in calvert county, 71 annapolis, but 66 in warren county, virginia. so a mix of clouds and sunshine here early on. temperatures will be climbing today, well up into the 80s. i'm draforecasting 87 for a hig temperature this afternoon. we will pick up a few more clouds again overnight, but if you're going out for dinner and a movie tonight, a nice dry evening. temperatures in the low 80s. in the mid-70s by about 10:00. here is tomorrow, starting out with a fairly dry picture around here, but there is a little weather front trying to come through here tomorrow. could wring out one or two lonesome seem unlikely. a mother to be has won her battle against health officials in mississippi. it centers around her placenta which she calls her baby's life line. jordan says after she gives placenta home crowded while others say that things are surprisingly quiet. that was a shot at and it's really hard to just kind of put that all aside and sort of focus on having fun or playing, even. hey, playing of the beltway outer loop, always slow to begin with. now complication passing georgia avenue towards the temple. two left lanes getting by the crash. apparently everybody got pulled over to the shoulder and then authorities said we have injuries here. so now delays back almost outf college park. welcome into the first morning of safetracking on the orange and silver lines. single tracking between east falls church and ballston. in placfo safetrack. it is the first monday morning commute of the safetrack program. >> and it could make for a challenging commute. estimated to impact more than 70,000 trips. kristin wright is live at the east falls church metro station for us this arlington. the question of course, how are things looking this morning? >> reporter: right now we're seeing a lot of the shuttle buses, they are starting to leave now at 6:30. they're running between east falls church and the ballston station. they're running every ten minutes. and we've seen that people are really using them. so what people are telling us is that they came earlier than normal today because as we've been mentioning, this is the first weekday of metro's safetrack. and people really don't know exactly what to expect. not that mean people down on the platform at this point, trains coming every 18 orange line, every 18 to 20 minutes on the silver line. back here live, we also have people from metro standing outside of the station and they're doing a great job of passing out flyers and information about safetrack so people know exactly what is going on. so i think the real test just ramping up now here can he 6:30 point. we'll keep you posted. our team coverage takes us live to i-66 now where derrick ward is on the roads for us. how is traffic there? >> reporter: still smooth sailing eastbound. we're just coming up under monroe street. we just crossed monroe. we're about to round the bend. we came out of backup that was surrounding glebe road and again, it is smooth sailing. a pleasant ride. irene johnson doing a great job of driving up there. we're not having to have too much stop and go traffic that we've this would parallel some of the single tracking orange line of metro. so so far so good here on the roads. we'll see about tomorrow. i guess a lot of people feeling it out today. if biking to work is an option, capitol bikeshare offering it discounts. $2 family honored firefighter john ulmschneider sunday as his name was unveiled on the wall of honor in annapolis. ulmschneider and another firefighter were shot in april when they forced entry into a good morning. yeah, and we have metro workers out the here handing out these pamphlets to passengers explaining the safetrack maintenance program. and behind me, we have shuttle bus s coming and going every ten hints. we have the trains of course expected to come every eight minutes. and joining me is metro's general manager paul weiedefeld. thank you for staying with us. tell us what your message is to passengers as we deal with this until june 16. >> again, it's almost like a snow storm that we know is coming but we know 15 of them are coming, i can give you the dates. so i'm need to plan ahead. that's the biggest thing. think about your work particularly. start it earlier, start later, bike ride, car pool, whatever. just think about the things that you can do because the system won't be able to handle the same volume that we do normally. we're trying to make sure we get the people that have no other option to be able to use the rail. if you have options, please use them. >> and so when this is all said and done after a year, that's the expectation, we're not saying that everything will be perfect on metro. >> no, it will not be 1976. but we will have a more reliable system and we will have a safer system. and that's the key. but there will be issues. we're dealing with basic, basic work. replacing rail, tice. what they will feel is the ride will be more reliable. and that's was just one guy who walked by and somebody asked him how you doing and he s feeling among people. look over here, these are the free shuttles running between east falls church and ballston this morning. they run every ten minutes. so it seems here okay, but still early. i went down to the flat form a few minutes ago. not huge crowds down there. at least not here. and that's a good sign. a good number of people down there and more still arriving as we get later in the morning. so we'll keep you posted on the nbc washington app and elsewhere on line to tell you how things are going. we'll go live now to derrick ward who has been on 66 all morning checking out conditions there. any changes so far, derrick is this. >> reporter: we're heading west now on 66 coming up on ohio street. an things don't look too bad. you can't really seat the eastbound traffic on 66, but you've got the usu untoward again. it's actually been a rather pleasant drive up and down 66 here today in this first day of metro safetrack. and again, we're along the area that is single tracking on the orange line, so i think if it there were issue, we'd's them here. derrick ward, back to you. back on the trains, we're starting to see here at the live desk that places are getting packed. take a look at some of the pictures that we've received. this is on the orange line. many still deciding to at that time train although a lot of the people leaving earlier than usual. and as we take a look at the platform here at the vienna metro station, seeing more people start to arrive. and you can see here
