Still a risk of a couple of passing showers but we should be blowing the rain drops out of here and blowing the clouds out of here as well by late into the afternoon. It was the march that sparked a movement and today the organizers are encouraging women across the country to stay home from work and there are a lot of ways the march could impact you. We want to give you a look at what you need to know about todays women a day without a woman event. The organizers of the march on washington want women to stay home and take the day off from paid and unpaid labor. The group wants to call attention to wage inequality, gender discrimination and job insecurity. Across the world day is International Womens day. Women in more than 50 countries plan to strike to raise awareness about gender violence, reproductive lights, labor rights and environmental protection. Women are also asked to avoid shopping and in stores and online. The exception is shopping at local Small Businesses and women and minority owned companies. Now, women and men are being encouraged to wear red today as well. Red represents revolutionary love and sacrifice and has a history with the labor movement. Men are also being asked to help with domestic chores and care giving. Theyre being encouraged to rally for equal pay and other work place issues for women, with women and you can also find a list of all the different events happening today on the nbc washington app. Held today as well and two events will have a noticeable impact on the district. At 11 00 this morning women plan to march from Freedom Plaza to the white house. Then at 3 30 this afternoon supporters plan to march down c from the u. S. Department of labor to John Marshall park. It has also sparked some local schools to shut down for the day. Those include Prince Georges County, center city Public Schools and alexandria Public Schools. This elementary school. This is a call based on numbers. When you are missing 1,700 teachers and about 30 of your transportation staff, how do you function . Those numbers by dr. Kevin maxwell, ceo of schools in Prince Georges County. Maxwell said the county could not provide safe and productive learning without adequate staff and went on to apologize for the inconvenience. This also impacts some schools in d. C. And northern virginia. A day without a woman boycott organizers, the same ones behind the womens march on washington that happened right after the election are calling for a oneday strike around the world. To spotlight the role women play in society and suggest women take part in rallies and marches near then. The boycott is also expected to have a huge impact on local businesses. So take a look at this live picture from the scene. This is 95 southbound here at 619 triangle. Still a big response on the right side of the roadway so you can get by on the left side. The problem is, it is still quite slow. Bigger than a onemile backup right now this morning. So you can see that problem there through the quantico area. 66 into town. No problems and 95 northbound is unaffected here. 270 southbound from frederick down to the spur, youre okay. A couple of spots of slowdowns here this morning perhaps because of whats falling from the sky. Speaking of that, how are we going to handle this rain this morning . The good news is its nothing all that heavy and it will be out of here before really 7 00 or 8 00 in the morning gets around. So by the time it gets toward the middle and tail end of the morning commute, everything should be drying out quickly. But for now, early risers and early out the door people are going to be dealing with rain drops south and east of the Washington Area down into parts of Southern Maryland to northern fredericksburg. An argument on the road went too far in maryland and now one man is recovering from shooting injuries. Police say two men got out of their cars on the shoulder of the road on u. S. 340. Things got heated and police say the 26yearold man shot the other driver in the leg and foot. Its not really clear how this argument started at this point. Police say four were discovered on pumps at the station. Police dont know whether any credit card information was stolen. Metro could vote to raise Service Starting july 1st. Bus fares would go up a quarter and parking could go up 10 cents. Thats not all. Your metro bus line could be going away for good. 13 bus lines could be cut to close a budget gap. One of them is the 2t bus. Metro says two lines that could be cut would leave riders without another transit option. A florida couple wants answers after a cruise ship ends up so close to their house it had to be put in reverse. Can you imagine the homeowner recorded the incident on her phone. So much so theyre considering a measure of some 225,000 to further invest in security here at bender and other Jewish Centers in the wake of this latest round of threats. Lets take you now to video here right now the council is considering that six figure measure which is a grant proposal. The goal here to assist threatened Jewish Centers including bender jcc in paying for additional security. County executive pitched this measure. It comes at bender gets its sixth bomb threat since january. All safe thanks to daily security sweeps and preparedness drills. I mean, of course theres always a level of concern, but the school has been phenomenal at keeping us updated, at making us feel like the kids are safe. And last month you may recall the nearby charles e. Smith Jewish Day School is one of three local Jewish Day Schools also threatened with bomb threats and coming up in our next hour well tell you how bender plans to put that money, if approved, to use right away for their security. This is from iowa to oklahoma and almost all of missouri and kansas. Th f already killed six people and evacuations are in the thousands already. Firefighters hoping that calmer winds today will work in their favor in fighting these fires. So far hundreds of homes and properties have been damaged. You can see just how intense it is. In texas the largest fire spreading across two counties was estimated at more than 92,000 acres and right now is only 25 contained. Now back to you. Thank you. Investigators are still trying to figure out what sparked a brush fire near greenbelt national park. Chopper 4 flew over the flames yesterday. Firefighters say windy conditions helped fuel the fire, but the rain later helped put it out. A College Dorm Room was on fire in northwest washington. The building was evacuated near m street. One firefighter was hurt in the response. Were told this started on a couch on the fourth floor. A pile of caught fire but its not clear how that happened. The fire was quickly contained. Today a vigil will be held to remember four Charles County students who died this year. All of them were seniors at West Lake High School. Two were killed in a crash last friday. Tonights vigil will begin at 6 00 at West Lake Stadium. Congress is closer to approving a law to make federal government buildings more mom friendly. Last might the u. S. House passed a bill that would require each building to have sufficient lactation spaces for breastfeeding.
