Southern Maryland
. Here is the way the next 24 hours will look. 7 00 a. M. This morning, temperatures near freezing with risk of freezing rain here this morning through about 7 00 or 8 00. By tonight dry, temperatures in the mid and upper 40s and dry temperatures back down near 33 as you get your wednesday started. Well time out the rain in ten minutes. And let me tell you, they are vehicle and slippery. You will have to be careful. My entire trip in was just kind of a mess here this morning. Northbound
Fairfax County

Outer loop, two crashes 95 south beforend beltway at central avenue, and 15 southbound after 40 have the left lane getting by a crash that still remains there. Team Coverage
this morning with tom kierein. Tom, i know this morning you said this is the worst winter morning youve seen so far drivingwise. Reporter and walking on sidewalks. Your front steps are just coated with ice. We are in reston, virginia. This is a condo parking lot where the cars are covered in ice and the parking lot itself is just a sheet of ice. And we are just creeping along here as the ice covered surfaces even though air temperatures are above freezing are still frozen solid. And you have to wrach your footing and just be extremely careful. Especially will this any untreated surface. Most of the sidewalks and side treats and side roads that we have seen here in
Northern Virginia
are still completely ice covered on this im calling it treacherous
Tuesday Morning
. The main roads are wet, the ones that have been salted are wret, and passable. But its the side streets, sidewalks, side roads, watch out this morning. Back to you. Coming up on 6 after the hour. And a woman is dead after crashing in to a backhoe in loudoun county. Were working to see if ice was a factor in the crash. It h route 7 near the intersection with route 9. Were told 7 was plowed and cleared of snow at the time of the crash, but there were icy spots. Were working for on you this weather alert day. The ice causing trouble for folks in
Prince Georges County
, too. Derrick ward is in chillum for us and giving us a good look at what things are look out there. Reporter good morning. As tom was saying, its really more treacherous on the sidewalk than it is once you get to the street. Some side streets are a bit dicey. And you see some wet spots now. A lot of the roads have been treated, so times that is liquid or at least slush, but its best to assume that its ice. Take a look at what happens when folks are coming out of their building. A gentleman just came out of the building behind me and he about fell flat because there is ice right at the door. It doesnt necessarily look bad. And if you come back to us live here, take a look, a lot of people are actually walk in the snow. Its a surface where you can get some traction at least. Because doing this is a lot more preferable than doing this. We are live in chillum, derrick ward, news 4. Molette, to you. Looks like were having trouble with molettes signal, so well try to get her for you a little later. Your morning commute should be pretty smooth if you plan on taking the rails or bus line to get to work. Metrorail is running on trains schedule. Vre, a lot of you have asked about that, and they say they are on normal weekday schedule this morning. If any of this changes, we will update you not only here on air but also in the nbc washington app. 5 07. If youre just joining us this morning, it is a storm team 4 weather alert day. You look at all the rain, freezing rainhe and we also want to show you a picture of national harbor. We have icicles on our camera. Gives and you small taste of what were dealing where when you step outside. Its extremely dangerous. Weather alert day coverage continues. More
School Delays
are rolling in. You can add d. C. Public schools and
Frederick County
maryland
Public Schools
to the list of delays. They are now two hours delayed opening for
Frederick County
maryland and d. C. Public schools on this weather alert day. This is just one of the reasons you see here the roads especially bad this morning. Sidewalks are pretty bad, too, thanks to yesterdays snow, freezing rain and then the overnight freezing temperatures. We want to turn to chuck bell now for a look at how all of this is impacting what is sure to be a smooth oh, yeah, smooth in the sense of frictionless commute. Everything has been glazed over with a little coat of freezing rain and freezing drizzle. Temperatures are still at or below freezing for most areas out to the west of d. C. Prince georges county southbound above freezing right now. And here is where the radar shows dry conditions in the immediate metro area, but pockets of freezing rain now from luray through page, up into the panhandle of
West Virginia
. Use extreme caution. Here is timing out what will happen later today. By 7 00 this morning, areas of heavy rain, good news. Its above breezing aloft and the raindrops will actually bring the warmer air down with them and that will bring heavy rain into the area by about 9 00 or 10 00 this morning. Here is 9 00 a. M. Future weather, heavy rain pushing right into the heart of the metro, it will be a very rainy and slow day. Temperatures later today will generally be in the upper 40s and low 50s, but the worst o or four hours. Peek at the weekend in ten minutes. New accident northbound indian head highway at swan creek road. Again, northbound lanes in the middle of the roadway slowing things already here this morning. 95 at dale city, again, southbound we have a crash before and after dale city and you can see some of the response right there on the scene. Cars spun out on the left side of the roadway. Northbound
Fairfax County
parkway before braddock, a crash blocking the right lane. And 15 south, one lane getting by a crash. 5 13. And were getting new details just in about an overnight homicide in
Prince Georges County
. What were learning when we check back in with
Megan Fitzgerald
. And were also working for on you this weather alert day. We just learned d. C. Schools are on a two hour delayed opening this morning. What else we can expect and the weekend looks good. It is a storm team 4 weather alert day. Take a look at radar and you can see pretty clearly why. Rain, freezing rain continuing to drench parts of our region. And that is making for a slick situation on the roads. Even about it just looks like the pavement is wet, there could be black ice there. Chuck bell and
Melissa Mollett
are tracking the latest conditions this morning. And we have reporters all across the area this morning keeping an eye on this icy and dicey conditions on the roadways. Tom kierein has taken the 4 x 4 out. I drove in from receston and no doubt had to drive extra lot of a
Shopping Center
and it is like an ice skating rink here. We have a complete ice covered parking lot across this huge
Shopping Center
and it is absolutely ice covered. It really is like an ice skating rink. We are creeping along here in the storm team 4 x 4. When you hit the brakes, you just slide. You cannot turn sharply. Walking is just impossible. You will fall down, break a bone or hit your head trying to walk on this kind of ice. Now, we came down on route 7 and route 7 was just wet. They had salted that. Were now turning on to the access road to the
Shopping Center
and it is sort of slushy and a little bit wet. Were tracking this treacherous
Tuesday Morning
in the storm team 4 x 4. And the good news this morning is that temperatures will rise throughout the day and the snow will get washed away. The melting. So the runoff will make river levels rise and that could be a problem in places like georgetowns waterfront. Another problem you will notice today icy sidewalks. You can see in the video here, this could create a big problem for people trying to walk to metro station or bus stop this morning. Outside on your own little walkway there, this could be a big problem. A lot of sidewalks that didnt get cleared of the snow yesterday are now sheets of ice from what i saw this morning even the places that were cleared of snow are still sheets of ice. Most of us encountered the icy sidewalks as we headed in to work this morning. You got to be careful out there. Now, due to the very icy sidewalks, were letting you know about the best deicers our
Consumer Team
did some digging. And if youre in a time crunch and youre looking for a fast acting melter, calcium chloride is your best bet for but you have to be careful, it can damage some plants when its overapplied. If youre a pet owner potassium chloride work best for you. Consumer reports says these are safe for pets and environment environmentally friendly. Developing right now, a
Homicide Investigation
in
Prince Georges County
, a man was shot and killed. Investigators say the call came in at around 11 00 this morning. When they arrived to the 8600 block of greenbelt road, the man had already died. So far no word on a suspect or motive. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the
Prince Georges County
police department. Back to you. A developing story now this
Morning Police
are investigating a deadly shooting that happened during the busy are yorush hour
Prince Georges County
yesterday evening. They found a man sufferir he later died at the hospital. No word yet on a motive or a suspect. We want to get another look at the storm team 4 radar which is showing a lot of pink and green this morning. Thats all rain and freezing rain. If you have to go to work today, it will be not your friend. Well put it nicely that way. Chuck, we just learned
Frederick County
, virginia schools will be closed today. And you can still see a lot of that icing, freezing rain. Good call from the
School Districts
to either delay or cancel today. It is just so slippery outside. Even walking the dogs yesterday, i ended up staring up at the sky because i lost my footing out on 16th street like 16th and t northwest. It just looked wet and next thing you know, youre staring up at the sky. Freezing rain has left about a ten tth of an inch of glaze on just about everything. Ground temperatures were below freezing, so everything stuck very slippery. Hey sheets of ice early. Heavy rain moving in after about 8 00 this morning and dry and breezy after about 3 00, 4 00 this afternoon. So it will be like three days in one, well start with winter, temperatures at or below freezing from washington north and westbound, well above freezing now in
Southern Maryland
. You saw it on radar and here it is again. These areas of pink, that is pockets of freezing rain near winchester and martinsburg here early this morning. Not much falling out tof the sk right now. Likely to come this just as rain as temperatures will be well above freezing and look at the heavy rain and pockets of heavy thunderstorms now down just west of the raleigh area. That whole pinch of moisture is coming towards us. It will be arriving here during the course of the morning then. So here is future weather. 7 00 a. M. , moderate rain in the shenandoah valley. By 8 00, 9 00 this morning, those pockets of moderate rain moving into the metro area here. If you can delay travel until after about 9 00, 10 00 this morning, temperes and if you can delay until after lunchtime, this big wash of heavy rain with temperatures in the 40s and 50s should all but erase this icy start this morning that is just a memory. By 2 00, we may actually be back into sunshine with temperatures briefly reaching up into the 50s today. How much rain might we expect . On average i think half to three quarters of an inch. There will be possible kets t s that pockets that get an inch or more. So flood watches are up until tonight. So today 50s with the rain, 40s with the clouds tomorrow, 30s with sunshine on thursday. Friday kind of on the chilly side, as well. But the weekend looks great, milder weather. Back up into the upper 50s and low 60s by saturday and sunday. Four things you need to know again at 5 31. Now traffic with melissa. Every time you see me, its another problem. River road here western avenue, car on fire there. Crews are on the scene. Has the fire outno lanes are still blocked as theyre trying to clean up that mess here this morning montgomery northwest line. Waring station road at copper road, do have a brand new crash there. Northbound indian head highway at swan creek road, crash there middle of the roadway. Really cause somethiing some ba. And that is a normal slow spot. 95 here at dale city, a crash off to the left side of the roadway, it is slick, nasty, please be careful. It might look okay, but it sadly is not. Its 5 24. Developing this morning, medical experts still trying to figure out how to stop the spread of the zika virus. They will gather at the

of science engineering and medicine this morning for a workshop to take a look at research priorities. Concern over the spread of that mosquitotransmitted virus has worried

Ed shearen took home thinking out loud and
