Loudoun, Prince William and charles counties are headed back today. Montgomery county schools are also starting today. And the biggest district in maryland is a little bigger this year. News4s Kristin Wright is live at Walt Whitman High School with more for us. Good morning. Reporter good morning. Thats right. A Record Number of students in Montgomery County, more than 156,000. As you said, eun, making it the Largest School district in maryland. Significant changes this year, one of them being the school start times. This is a big debate over the last several years. The idea that parents who wanted this wanted High School Students to get more sleep. So the school board voted to make these changes in february and here they are. So High School Students will start 20 minutes later this school year with School Starting at about 7 45. Middle School Students also shifting their schedule, 20 minutes with most of them starting at 8 15. Elementary School Students in Montgomery County will start at 9 00 or 9 25. Depending on the school. Thats about a ten minute shift. Now, also 800 new teacher, new educators in the School District this year. Some of them replacing those who left. Others are adding on for growth as we talked about earlier, adding on for growth in Montgomery County. The district lost about 380 positions due to some budget cuts. Now, the other big thing for families this year is new immunization requirements by the state of maryland. Those are for seventh and eighth graders. Of course very important. Everybody has to have those before they come back to school this year. Lots of change, lots of interesting stuff. Stick with us through the morning. Well bring you what else you need to know. Theyll have free breakfast for all students next week to celebrate the growth of the Free Breakfast Program over the last five years. And its back to school today for 73,000 students in Loudoun County. Heres a change for some high schoolers. They will not have to take midterms or finals this year. Snow days from backtoback stormy winters have cancelled the tests. Today Riverside High School will be opened for first time. Police officers have no confidence in police chief cathy lanier. The d. C. Police union is putting out the results of a vote it held this weekend. It comes amid a huge spike in crime and the highest homicide rate in the city in years. The vote also came at the tail end of the latest all hands on deck initiative to limit crime. Chief lanier said it may have influenced the vote with so many officers called in. She said, quote, when we have Violent Crime we have to make the sacrifices that we all swore wed make when we took this job. We have new numbers from the all hands on deck campaign. D. C. Police say they seized 21 illegal guns across the city since friday night. They say they arrested 16 people for having those guns. Earlier this month, chief lanier blamed illegal guns in part for the citys spike in crime. A live look at the capitol for you this morning. Former Maryland Governor Marvin Mandel has passed away at the age of 95. Governor larry hogan released a statement saying maryland lost a great leader and a friend. The General Assembly pointed mandel governor in 1969 after spiro agnew was elected nixons vice president. He was elected to two full terms but his career ended in 1977 when he was convicted on political corruption charges. He pass away surrounded by family. Montgomery county police say the man had a fight in a parking lot on veirs mill road last night. The victim tried to run away from at least three attackers but they caught up with him. They beat him up and he died at the hospital. He may have been shot or stabbed. Theyre not sure. The medical examiners report will determine the cause of death. A young girl and a man are recovering from gunshot wounds in southeast washington. Evidence markers covered third and i streets last night. D. C. Police say both the victims should survive. A new report from the American Academy of pediatrics shows nearly a quarter of kids say they try alcohol before their 13th birthday. You need to Start Talking about drinking by the age of 9. A time when most kids start thinking positively about alcohol. The report encourages pediatricians to question preteens about alcohol use. A new survey shows that alcohol and drug use is a significant problem among teens with chronic illness. Researchers surveyed a group of 400 children under the age of 18 with diabetes, arthritis, Cystic Fibrosis or crohns disease. They found nearly a third used alcohol and 17 used marijuana.
