[ applause ] gray entered his campaign party with major cheers from supporters as he defeated nine-year incumbent e yvette alexander. the allegations of scandal never proven against him. >> i feel absolutely wonderful and so excited that the people in ward 7 have given me the opportunity to represent them. obviously, i didn't like what happened to me ei put that into the history books and move forward with my life and the life of public service i love so much in the city. >> and it was a bad night for the mayor. she lost three reliable votes on the council. >> the only contested incumbent to win was brandon todd out of ward 4 beating leon andrews. >> and laruby may was beaten by trayon white to replace marion barry. >> and robert white beat vincent orange in a tight race working as the director of community outreach. >> and in northern virginia, libby garvey won for the arlington county board. you can find all the results from the primaries on the nbc washington app. a federal court gave up conflicting accounts of the number of injured. all the injured are in their mid-teens to early 20s. this happened in broad daylight during a vigil for a drowning victim. and reports say people potts is following thi tracey, good morning. >> reporter: hi, eun. from donald trump, the latest on this is that president obama was angrier at him than he was at the shooter. that was trump's response. to what was a very harsh criticism from president obama. and they went back and forth as they have in the past on this term, "radical islam." the president won't say it and therefore hasn't been tough on islamic terror. on the other hand, both president obama and hillary clinton seem to be in lock-step saying that the term itself is not what is ending terrorists, it's what you do about it. here on capitol hill lawmakers are again looking at a weapons ban for people on the no-fly list so they can't buy weapons. the fact that you can't get on a plane with a full bottle shampoo, hillary clinton said, but even though they can purchase a gun on the no-fly list is absurd. all this is spilling into politics here. >> tracie potts on capitol hill for us, thank you. the attack in orlando is stirring over gun control and enflaming passions on both side. we talked to virginia senator tim kaine who hopes this urges congress to finally take measures while supporters insist the popular ar-15 is used for sport. >> it is a sport. and i think that's what we lose site of, it is a sport, an olympic sport as a matter of fact. >> we do have a federal list of prohibited categories of people who are barred by law from having weapons. i support a proposal to add to that list folks who are on the terrorist watch list. >> so far gun legislation has gone nowhere in congress. nine people killed in their church one year ago this week, the city of charleston is holding mule the people who died during bible study. they are also preparing plenty of security measures to go along with it. >> obviously, this is the result of what occurred in orlando, it allows us and inquires us to recognize that what we are doing is absolutely necessary. >> the suspect in the shooting, dylann roof is accused of several murder charges with his trial set for november. 4:49 and now to the officer on trial in the death of freddie gray in court. prosecutors are recreating the route steven goodson drove the day he transported gray. two blood analysts confirmed the blood stains found inside the van belonged to gray. but in a win for the defense, a police detective testified he never saw the transport van make a sudden stop. this says a, quote, rough ride. goodson is charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter. and sentencing is set to begin tomorrow for a former military lawyer convicted of nearly killing a mcclain couple. andrew schmuhl was found guilty of seven charges. the attack was revenge against leah fisher who had fired his wife felicia. the lawyer tried to argue that andrew schmuhl was so heavily medicated he didn't know what he was doing. his wife will be on trial this fall. and a man tried to grab a woman while he was walking with her son in stonewall park. police say the man fled into a wooded area after she yelled at him. formally, nobody was hurt. but if you notice anything suspicious or anybody suspicious around noon contact police. metro's safetrack plan is about to move into the second phase of work. today an update will be made on how this will impact the region. metro will brief the national regional impact safety board this afternoon as they talk about extra bus service and carpool options. and congratulations for the soon-to-be mom as a little orangutan is expected. latang and her mate kyle are pregnant. check out the 80s. the mid-70s with a chance of a thundershower, small chance, by 8:00 this evening. then overnight tonight and tomorrow morning we may get a passing shower. then a little sun breaks out midday thursday, afternoon highs near 80 degrees. but then some showers and thunderstorms are looking more likely. that's going to be thursday night and into friday midday. some of those showers coming through, maybe brief heavy downpours late thursday night into early friday morning. then the sun is back on friday afternoon with highs in the mid-70s. getting into the weekend, beautiful day on saturday. sunshine with afternoon highs near 80 for father's day on sunday into the mid-80s. a little more humid but overall a great day for the activities going on, d.c. jazz fest is going on. then you're headed to lynn doinden westbound on 66 at virginia 79. 66 west closed. exit at linden, go past the exit and virginia state authorities should be rerouting traffic. eastbound lanes are open. 66 west in linden is closed. the work zone is the long-term paving project on the bw parkway. the right lane is blocked and the left lane is getting by. southbound is up affected. this is a paving
