Gla and history making landing, how a one of its kind plane is changing the future of flying. Its 6 07. Im Chris Van Hollen. My entire public life ive worked to bring people together for the common good. Sometimes that means taking on and beating powerful special interests. Like big oil, the nra and wall street. And ive done that. But sometimes it means finding Common Ground to get things done for marylanders. Thats especially important now when so many seek to divide us. We must ensure that every child can succeed and build an economy that works for everyone. I approve this message because together we can get more things done. But sierra club chooses jamie raskin for congress they all talk about climate change. Because only raskin wrote laws to reduce our Carbon Footprint and is leading the fight against fracking in maryland. Raskin im jamie raskin, and i approve this message. Were looking at 6 14. Next up, we have reporters notebook. Were back in 15 minutes with more of the mornings top stories. Good morning. Im pat lawson muse. Empty fire extinguishers in tunnels, trash blocking emergency exits, uncovered high voltage third rail covers. Telephones out of order, trains speeding near track workers. Just a few of more than 200 problems causing new concern on metro. The fta has ordered immediate action. Joe madison, is it a shock to you to hear about all of these problems more than a year after the deadly incident with the smoke in Lenfant Plaza . Yes, it is a shock to hear about this effectually and im concerned, worried, and it speak it is s t fact that it didnt happen overnight. And we talked to a front line worker who told us that many workers simply arent following inspection procedures. Does that surprise you . Because their safety as well as the safety of passengers is at stake. Well, i think everything you said so far is surprising. I think for the critics of metro especially those in congress and we have seen that over the last week, i think what it is doing, it is justifying their criticism. These reports. And this isnt the first report. You know, this is just one of many that have become this is the latest. The latest. And up in are sayinone are sayi moving in the right direction. For Paul Wiedefeld and those at metro, i know they have to be saying when will this stop in terms of the bad news. We hear wiedefeld is the right guy, he now has a stafr iafety inspector in place. But if these reports continue to come out, he can talk about shutting the metro town for six mochts to do repair, he will have to do something more immediate to get folks on his side and i mean on capitol hill. He has quite a huge ship to turn around here. He came here with all these problems. He really does. This isnt surprising to me, but its extremely depressing. And it goes to the fact that there is not a work ethic there. Somebody has got on drum it into everybody from the top to the bottom this is serious. You have to do a better job. I have a mole, some we say, who phones me from time to time he works for metz the troh and tells me Horror Stories about people not working properly, people getting jobs based on their and theyre not paying attention. He isnt my only showeource, bu nevertheless, it doesnt paint a good picture. Things dont look good and they have to change. The problem is that you need whistleblowers and theyre very reluck taptd especially in government to come forward. And then the question is who can to you tell. Because if you tell the people at the top and theyre not going to do anything about it, then the chances are you lose your job or you get demoted or youre marked for a long time. But i think your mole is right on target. I do think the new manager, he must have known that these were issues before he took the job. I honestly think he knows and he has to crack the whip a lot harder. And he has the brought in a new safety chief. And congressman mika, remember he said i want heads to and the new head of metro may have to start going down further to say we might have to take out some of these workers and replace them with people with a new mindset and weve talked about how metro need as new mindset and he may have to get in the weeds and get rid of some of the front line workers. You even have First Responders who are worried. I saw the nbc 4 report. When you talk about fire extinguishers that dont work, this doesnt work, that doesnt work, you not only put the riders and employ years at work, but then the people who go into supposedly help and save you, theyre at risk and they cant do their job. And for all of his impassed speech a guying last week, im going to come back here, ill follow this through, youre not helping us, there isnt much sympathy on capitol hill and these reports make get around. An there is a new transportation survey that shows most people in this area feel that is our biggest challenge. After jobs, after the economy, after crime, after terrorism. Youve mentioned surprise. This one really surprised me because usually, you know, especially with politicians, you say well deal with crime, education, have better schools. But you look at this survey and to your point, it says traffic, by 33 . I think its 10 when you get down to crime and education. So that it tells you specific to this area, a couple weeks ago we talked about a report that showed d. C. Was two in terms of traffic. But i think the issue here, youre going to have all three jurisdictions or all three jurisdictions will have to get together to try to solve this. Its just not a problem in d. C. , its a problem with maryland, in virginia, obviously a lot of government work hes coming to d. C. But this is a regional i jurisdictions coming together to come up with some kind of answer. I dont know how easy that will be. Its a quality of life issue. It is. Its a whole change of our society the reality is that you have to do more teleworking, working at home if you possibly can did that. And you have to look at staggered times off. This isnt the 21st century where everybody works 9 00 to 5 00. And its not just elected officials. But they have to work with businesses who have to be part of the agreement, too. How do you get real estate people to stop building houses and apartments. Im looking at raeks aalexandri now in the district theyre not including parking in projects. They think that people will be near a metro station, they will walk and to other alternative things. Theyre counting on the millennials. I hope theyre rig isnt it ironic that another survey that looked at Regional Travel trends has found that telework has reduced traffic in our area by 10 that it could be so much worse. Yeah. And we are talking about this, anytime you have a storm and folks get to stay at home and the government puts out the word that hey, you can telework, you dont have to come in, people take advantage of that. And so the answer may be that you may have to see more businesses maybe the government offering this outside of these sort of emergency situations in terms of where it may be difficult for people to get into work because of weather conditions. You guys live in d. C. , so you dont have to worry about that. Yes, to a degree because you guys that live outside of d. C. Come into d. C. And mess up the traffic. Youre welcome. Well be right back. Kids he came here from rocky married 27 years. Raised 6 kids. Including 5 boys. He had grandpa move in with us. Glenn we loved having him as part of the family. Its what you do. Kids in congress, dad will protect president obamas legacy. Hell fight for jobs and protect Social Security and medicare. Glenn ivey will never quit on you; and we should know, were his kids. Glenn im glenn ivey and i approve this message. Ill take on the republicans for all of us. Welcome back. A local group says social media is a bigger problem these days than gangs. A security coordinator for Montgomery CountyPublic Schools blames social media for a lot of the violence that were seeing now in schools. The recent stabbing of a teen at a d. C. Metro station, allegedly started with and online altercation. Dave, it is no surprise that social media is becoming sort of the new staging ground for school yard brawls. Threatening taunts, tweets that unnerve people. You feel like you are being pursued. One young man left his mother got him out here into richmond, i believe and get the guy can get him on the internet and scare the heck of him down there. And they are vee, very concerned about this and theyre not quite sure what to do about it. Its hard to argue that it doesnt play role, but i think the counterargument would be it plays one part of the role. Its a new day. So we all know that. And most of these young people have ways to communicate in a positive and a negative way. I think the question is if its recognized that social media is a greater cause of this violence, then what do the schools do. What do parents do. How do you get control of it. Weve talked about this before. Yes, you need to know what your kids are doing, but if many of these schools allow these kids to bring these guys idevices in can schools do. And they dont have to use the devices in school. And it speaks to and i think i mentioned this last time. It speaks to what katcathy lani was attempting to do when she said the way we used to investigate gangs is physically infiltrate. And now you have to change to social media. You will have to now monitor the internet. Fighting Gang Activity now. And she was absolutely right even though some of her officers took exception with that. And what was interesting, you had one of the security coordinator, i think it might have been from Montgomery County, teaching kids how to deal with thing, this person said maybe we need a seminar where we teach parents how to be parents. Thanking about banning the cellphones in school, i think they should consider it. Put it in your locker, and dont use it during the school day. But like having the gun, the guys that want do the killing and murdering and thuggery, i hate to use that term, but they will have with they will when they get out of school. This doesnt happen just in school. It happened late at night, this happenshe you can tweet when youre walk down the street. Montgomery county police say there has been an uptick in Gang Violence in the county and part of the rope eason is social med. But we also saw the sherif
