meteorologist to find out if the path of the storm. are things wind down? >> they are. we've had most of our accumulating snow. we're not getting much more in the way of accumulation. this is quickly tracking off to the north and east. right now across northern virginia maryland the district the areas in graying getting very light snow. couple of bands of moderate snow that stretches toward the eastern shore. that's pulling to the north and east. there's one other band here frederick toward win chester that is a light ban of snow. that may be tracking to the northern suburbs over the next hour or so. we've had snow total reports of 5 to 6 areas to the south. metro area had about 4 inches. timing on when the snow ends by 5:00 a.m. most is going to be east of the bay. then by 6:00 to 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. we'll see most of the snow ending and pulling away across the eastern shore. and our temperatures right now in the teens are going to be hoovering in the teens through the morning through 8:00 9:30 or 10:00. by noontime in we'll in the mid 20s. by later in the afternoon we ought to be around 30s. that's going to be by late afternoon. next weather and traffic on the 1s coming up. i'll look at when the sunshine returns and now a look on the roads. chuck bell what is going on? >> reporter: good morning, tom. i think i heard something about sunshine in there but more single digit temperatures. winter isn't done with us yet. we're on the inner loop of the capital beltway right now. a couple of minutes ago near connecticut avenue. we were following this nissan. man, oh man here is the lesson you can learn from the video. take your foot off the gas! that's all this guy or gal would have had to do. i don't know who was driving. they had too much power on the accelerator. when you see it happening to your car take your foot off the gas and it will straighten out. the person was manageking mistake number one. as a result they just kept on slipping and sliding. we followed them at the safe distance for nearly a mile until they got off at connecticut avenue. this is exactly how accidents happen everyone. you need tow slow down this morning. the roads are s t capital beltway. it's not some side street in a quiet neighborhood. this is 495. it is snow covered and slippery this morning. i know you retweeted it. i sent out a location of the. icture of connecticutunty seeing between 5 and of inches. it's still falling! megan mcgrath moved locations. she's in waldorf there. it looks like a lot of snow behind you. >> reporter: we still have some very light snow falling a in the point. i have some pretty treacherous conditions out here in the waldorf area. caught up with a road crew here. they were behind me at the intersection here. you can see they finished with the bobcats cleaning up this intersection and they've now moved to the next intersection down there. they're scooping the snow and moving it out of the way. we saw large plows go through a while ago. also pushing the snow. we have really cold temperatures. so what we're seeing are snow packed roadways. it's the roads are just covered here. we're not seeing any pavement at all. the chemicals and the salt they normally put down that helps melt the snow. it's not working because it's too cold out. the chemocams aren't effective when the temperatures get below 20 which is what we have out here. we have about 16 degrees here in waldorf. the plows really have to do the brunt of the work here today. you can see they have a lot of catch up. we're seeing some traffic but not a lot which is a good thing. but folks need to give the plows a chance to do their jobs. back to you guys in the studio. >> thank you. a travel alert this morning. if you're traveling along the northeast corridor using amtrak snow will affect some services today. trains to philadelphia new york and boston will run today but not as often. if you're trying to escape the cold and head to florida, the auto train is running but the palmetto is cancelled. it runs from new york to georgia. we're keeping a close eye on the airports this morning for you. nearly 1200 flights have been cancelled across the country already today.re out of reagan national. dulles international cancelled 31 flights. same with marshall. check your airline. we'll let you know. we will. our snow coverage covered. they are slick this morning everywhere you go. you need take it slowly if you have to head out this morning. glover park team is looking for volunteers to help shovel snow today. they hit the pavement to clear sidewalks for neighbors who are elderly or injured. they've been doing this since 2011. we're working to get more informing about how you can volunteer and where to ask for help with dry snow. it's coming down around the metro. the heaviest snows are well east of washington. they continue to track to the north and east. we have one other band here. that may scoot to the northern suburbs in montgomery county. northern loudoun over the next hour or so into howard county where we've had around three inches. five to six inches has fallen south and west of washington. showing nebraska avenue. you can see everything is snow covered this morning in northwest washington. staying cloudy through 8:00. we'll see the sun by noontime. during the afternoon temperatures in the upper 20s near 30s. we'll stay below freezing throughout the rest of the day. what is untreated and unplowed is going to stay frozen throughout the rest of the day. a look at our next chances for snow over the next seven days. hey, melissa. >> still have the problem the outer loop of the beltway. the off ramp to kenilworth of a is completely blocked. not seeing it on camera. just spoke with police and they're telling us this is going to be sometime. the overturned truck has been righted. there's a light pole down. that's why it's shut down now. kenilworth avenue between ivy and the beltway have all lanes blocked from a different crash. 95 south and 198 that just popped up as a brand new accident. outer loop at coalsville road not a lot of traffic. hopefully you take it slow if you have to head out today. this is completely covered. it might look like normal road surface here. we're completely covered almost all the way around the beltway and 270 and 66 with the nice ice pack. back in ten have happened. it could be a fender bender. we're seeing a lot of crashes. don't think because you're in an suv you're going make it out safely. you have to take it easy. we'll keep you posted on the out of your way. take it slowly. good morning. i'm storm team 4 meteorologist. the snow is quickly ending as it pulls to the north and east. we have one lingering band here from haggerstown to winchester. that's going to be tracking maybe into the northern and western suburbs over the next hour or so adding maybe an additional quarter to half inch. on top of what has already fallen. a few lingering bands. saint mary's county and across the bay into cambridge and delaware. there is one here as well near annapolis. that's going to be quickly crossing the bay heading to the north and east. thank you. if you're think abouting heading outside today. you need to snow the roads are slick all over our region now. and prince william county there were some accidents overnight. drivers being warned to stay safe out there. richard jordan is checking on conditions for us. he's live in wood bridge more with what he's seeing. >> reporter: good morning. the snow is not coming down very heavy right now but it is treacherous on the roads here on prince william parkway. let me tell you what happened with the two vehicles that are pulled over off to the side of the road. the car in the front was trying to pull into a parking lot. not a very steep ramp, actually. it still got stuck. it's a low vehicle so we and the driver of this minivan helped to push it back on the road. the minivan was attempting to create a path to see if it could help the vehicle in the front get up the ramp. it's just not going to happen. there is a lot of snow here on the ground. if you plan on heading out the best advice to wait it out. there are several plows and road crews pushing the snow out of the way but it's a lot of snow so it's going to take a little time. hold off if you can. carol. >> caller: good morning. >> we appreciate you taking our call. bring us up to speed on what you're seeing finding, and doing in prince george's county. >> caller: well roadways in the county are snow covered. we have approximately 250 vehicles out. they are treating and plowing the primary and major collector roadways. once that is completed, they will be moving to the residential areas. >> and carol, we've heard that even the main roads, the highways are not clear right now. so what is the way you're going to strategize and tackle this problem as the morning wears on? >> caller: as i said as the morning wears on we're going to have the crews out. we've got them out there. they're working on those major and collector roadways first. we're trying to get that down into passable conditions. once they do that then they will be moving to as i said the residential areas. and they'll begin plowing the roads there. >> we know that prince george's county government has been closed for the day for most nonemergency folks. for the rest of people that live there, what is the advice. what do you want people to do to try to stay safe as the morning goes on? >> caller: we're encouraging people to stay off the roadways. if they have to drive instead schedule their outings later on in the afternoon. if they have to drive, please add additional time for traveling. they need to drive slowly. stay safe. >> all right, carol terry, thank you. >> thank you. it's 4:50. let's check out the conditions in the district. news 4 transportation reporter is live in dupont circle now. good morning,ed a ed aadam! i see you have your big hat on. how is it looking? >> reporter: it's cold out here. it's the biggest thing you'll notice. we're seeing the conditions here just like everywhere else around the region. the roads are completely snow covered here. you have to take it easy. we've seen a couple of cars come through slipping and sliding. in the district it's a little bit of a different transportation story. so you to clear the sidewalks, so you to clear the bike paths. there's a bunch of stuff that has to be done to get everybody up and moving. i saw one brave soul on a 10-speed this morning. a props to the person who was out riding the bike earlier this morning. the important thing to remember in the district the snow emergency goes into effect at 7:00 this morning. it your car is parked on a snow emergency route, you have to move it before 7:00 this morning or else you face ticketing and toe towing. right here dupont circle massachusetts avenue those are the snow emergency routes. >> all right. that's the thing. some people have to get to work today. if you don't have proper car, what are you going to do? get on your bike? walk? >> not always smart thing. one upside you'll be able to have a little fun with every big snow day comes an even bigger snowball fight. today the d.c. snowball fight association, the snowball fight association -- >> there's an association for that! >> yes. they're hosting a snowball fight. it will take place at 11:00 a.m. at dupont circle. the past have attracted hundreds. you want to battlebund bundle up and be ready for battle. >> you know they've been waiting for this! this is not good packing for snowballs. it's going to be pick up a bunch of snow and throw it. whatever works! >> i guarantee it won't stop them. >> you can't stop either when you're driving. the ebs kicks on and the pavement is slick underneath the snow cover this morning. there is a storm team 4 radar behind. it the bulk of the snow is continuing to track to the north and east. it is a snow alert weather alert morning. we have frequent storm team 4 updates for you as we track the snow that has been moving through here. heading to the north and east. the storm team 4 radar up close. the area in the gray getting a little bit of light snow across northern prince william, western fairfax, loudoun, pan handle of west virginia shenandoah valley, montgomery, and howard and frederick. much of the accumulating snow has ended. there's another band there that is across the bay near cambridge. the last little band here of light snow they may dip to the northern suburbs over the next hour or so. then most of that snow is gone as we go forward into the rest of the morning. that snow on the eastern shore by 8:00 this morning will be pretty much all gone and then behind that a lot of clouds around through 8:00 or so. we may get a little break in the cloud cover around 9:00 or 10:00 this morning with sunshine breaking out. the road conditions will be treacherous for the morning commute and the mid teens. and the afternoon commute around 30 degrees and sunshine out that will help to melt things a little bit. it will quickly freeze right back up. temperatures will stay below freezing. we have total amounts reported now from southern maryland 5 to 6 inches. across the plateau mick to the 4, 5, 6. high three to four inches for the northern and western suburbs. temperatures are cold. we're just in the teens. we'll stay in the teens through the morning hours. in the afternoon get up to around 30 with sunshine. tomorrow increasing clouds. next chance of snow is tomorrow afternoon. we could get some passing snow showers. heist reach highs reaching the mid 30s. temperatures fall turning colder on thursday. teens in the morning dropping to near 10 degrees by midnight. single digits friday morning. friday sunshine with lighter winds and highs in the teens. another chance of snow in the form of wintery mix on saturday. that may linger into sunday morning. sunday afternoon we finally get above freezing. we dry out. monday sunshine highs near freeze. now we have another crash to talk about. boy, these conditions are treacherous this morning. >> it is nasty. we come down 270. it was not a pretty scene this morning. another crash here. 270 southbound between 370 and changing road. not seeing it here on camera. it might look clean. i'm telling you it is white and it is packed. pretty nasty this morning. 95 southbound and 198 have that crash as well. outer loop off lent. days after a food truck was stolen. it's been found a familiar place. somebody spotted the truck yesterday on pen belt place in forestville and called police. a place where another stolen food
