flurries. total amounts of snow around the metro area. we could get four to eight inches including the northern and western suburbs. over eight inches it's possible. this looks like the heaviest snow zone is going to be south of the metro area from culpepper, into stafford and southern parts of maryland. around the metro area four-inch to eight-inch amounts. and out in the pennsylvania border up in that area it will be lighter. look at the temperatures down to single digits right now. it's just around five to ten degrees. the hour-by-hour forecast as we look forward to the afternoon, we'll have the increasing clouds. temperatures reaching low to mid 20s. that's when we'll see some light snow moving on through. a look at when the snow will be heaviest and when it ends. weather and point than what was used when it was completed in 1884. today is superintendent joshua starr's last day on the job. he is resigning as superintendent of schools. he asked to be released from his contract. there were concerns about his communication skills. we also told you the board of education may have lost confidence in his ability to do the job. the board has begun looking for starr's intended target. hours later, the same shooter skilled a security guard outside of a synagogue. house speaker john boehner says he is prepared to let funding run out at the department of homeland security. he says he has passed the bills needed to fund the agency and senate democrats are to blame if the agency shuts down at the end of the month. boehner made the comments in an interview to fox news. this is the latest finger-pointing over president obama's executive actions on immigration. a prince georges county woman stayed in police custody after allegedly stabbing her boyfriend. the two got into an argument yesterday morning. he was pronounced dead at the scene. she was still there when officers arrived. wmts has been charged with second-degree murder and first-degree assault. there's a new warning for families in ashburn, virginia after a string of break-ins. burglars have hit three homes in the last couple days. each time the crooks broke in through the back door or window. they strike early in the evening when people are not home from work yet. the homeowners are all of asian descent and may have been targeted because of ethnicity. today, you can't take the blue temperatures only single digits. by 8:00, it will be around 10 degrees. sunshine and breezy. lighter winds by noon should be in the upper teens. and light snow moves in around 5:00 p.m. then the snow gets heavier by 8:00 p.m. and the heaviest snows between 9:00 to 10:00 p.m. until 3:00 a.m. on tuesday. the snow ending by dawn on tuesday. temperatures down to near 20 degrees. a look at the timing morning. >> good morning, aaron. the windchill this morning, just brutal. people here waking up to temperatures they haven't felt in years. with the windchill feeling like negative 25 degrees outside. it's supposed to hit its rock-bottom at negative 30 this morning. very concerning for people as the city slowly gets back to life. of course, the windchills of the 13 inches of snow this weekend. making it boston's snowiest winter on record. really crippled the city. they're getting back slowly today into the swing of things. for example, public transit operating on a limited schedule. some flights starting to leave the airport. but very limited, as well. this weather, obviously causing big problems. obviously, a lot of concern for anybody that has to be outside. the homeless the elderly. places where people like that don't have access to the services they need. a big push to get them what they need. big problems for commuters. there was a huge pileup. a 20-car pileup on i-95 yesterday in new hampshire. an apartment roof collapse. about 200 families affected by that. the focus shifting to that new storm that's bearing down on the midwest and the southeast. louisville kentucky could receive up to a foot of snow. other areas, snow, ice and freezing rain. no escape from the brutal cold winter delivering record amounts of snowfall. >> sarah boston. stay safe sarah. with more snow more and more roofs are collapsing. look at this scene in new hampshire. you can see the roof of this trip small completely buckled under the pressure. massachusetts, part of an apartment complex caved in. >> it's very scary. i went up there and i see there's no way live over there anymore. >> people went on to the roofs to shovel and use snowblowers so that the roofs don't collapse. firefighters say it could be months before people who live there could be back in the moments. 12 minutes before the hour. and this morning, prince georges county police are searching for a police on a high-speed chase. this started in calvert county. the suspected thief jumped into a 2012 dodge charger that was warming up. a sheriff's deputy tried to pull him over. he head police into a chase. the driver lost control of the car and crashed into the woods. the suspect then took off into the woods. a man is dead after people in two vehicles exchanged gunfire in a parking lot yesterday. the shooting took place outside of the wings to go restaurant on garrisonville road in stafford county. two vehicles were involved. a male that stepped out of one of the vehicles during the incident was killed. it is not clear whether he shot any of those -- fired any of the shots. two people in the other car were also shot. they left to seek medical care before police arrived. today, the trial of a man accused of killing american sniper chris kyle resumes. eddie ray routh is accused of shooting kyle. a former deputy testified that he heard the suspect say he shot the two men because they wouldn't talk to him during a ride in a pickup truck. routh has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. commercial drones are one step closer to becoming a reality in the u.s. the faa has proposed rules that would allow drones for commercial uses for aerial photography, monitoring crops. the rules do ban drones from delivering goods, which had been seen ause. there could be three years before "snl" has been making us laugh since 1975. >> when "snl" started, the last helicopter flew out of vietnam. watergate was fresh in everyone's minds. and new york was broke. respect for authority was at an all-time low. that's what the world was like in 1975. and it's out of that that "snl's" satirical voice was born. >> we want to know what your favorite sketch was from last night's show. let us know using #snl40. >> when the legends of comedy sharing a stage like that is insane. i didn't begin to watch. once i started watching i wouldn't be able to stop. i can't wait to see it. >> i saw some of it. beyonce or -- i'm blanking on the actress' name. will ferrell came back as alex trebek. that was fun. >> and musical talent too. tom, we're focusing our attention on you because there's it's so cold out there, i don't know what to say about it. >> it's dangerously cold. stay inside. stay where it's warm as much as you can. if you have to be out, layer up with your warmest winter gear. this is a weather alert day because it is so cold. and we have a winter storm on the way. all of the areas in pink including all of virginia and most of maryland. snow pushes into kentucky tennessee. this is assumelating ahead of it. furries aloft over southwestern virginia. about 12 hours away of any accumulating snow around the metro area. 5:00 this afternoon, we'll see it mooifing in. here's the timing as of 3:30 4:00 this afternoon, may show up in the shenandoah valley. into the metro area around 6:00 7:00 p.m. it continues to snow tonight. and the heaviest snow around 11:00 p.m. to 2:00 or 3:00 in the morning. then it will taper off and end by 8:00. it's mostly east of the pay and pulling away tomorrow morning. four to eight inches in the metro area northern-western suburbs. over eight inches in southern maryland northern neck fredericksburg, and the lower part of the eastern shore could be 8 to 12 inches there. panhandle of west virginia out there towards western maryland. but fourommon amounts around the metro area. our windchills are 5 to 10 below zero. temperatures are in the single digits right now. that's what showed up on melissa's dashboard this morning. single digit temperatures. and our dry roads will be with us for the morning commute. no problem. might have is a dusting on the roads. near 20 by dawn on tuesday. some sun back after that. near 30 tomorrow afternoon. might get a little light snow. late on wednesday. the wednesday evening, it quickly ends. only a dusting right now. and thursday cold and very cold on friday with highs only near 20. sunshine though a chance of some light snow again on saturday. a very active pattern. now, melissa's here to show us her dashboard temperature. what was it? >> it was cold. 6 degrees this morning. i have to pull over and take a picture of this because my poor car must be so cold. it was 6 degrees. that's nasty. dangerous cold as tom's been saying be careful. wide look at things overall. no problems, inner loop and outer loop of the beltway. seeing everything flowing well. 66 at 123. it's looking good too. and taking a lookal the beltway, and central avenue. have a warning for you. penn line on a sunday schedule. and brunswick canceled because of the holiday. casinos are popping up. how do people feel about them? more teens are not g 4:58 right now. we're learning more about how you feel about the new casinos in maryland. the university of maryland and "the washington post," put out a new poll. it says 53% of maryland voters feel positive. and 38% say casinos are a bad thing. just 5% of people had no opinion. the state's next casino will be at national harbor set to open next year. marc riders may get a new perform at the rock ford station. they have a meeting of csx transportation. csx is proposing a new project. first to fix up the station house. you can see a document written by george washington. the statehouse in annapolis is putting the speech he used to resign from the continental army on display tonight. i would be afraid to touch it. >> they're concentrationists are going -- no. >> be careful. news 4 continues right now at 5:00 a.m. this is a storm team 4 weather alert. >> it is disrespectfully cold outside. temperatures -- >> word. >> windchills in the single digits. and we have snow on the way, too. tom will break it down for us. the bitter cold is causing problems at dulles airport, too. we have an update on a pipe burst that affected travel overnight. here is a look at the storm team 4 radar. snow is heading our way. and we don't mean conversational snow. let's check in with tom k. >> our windchills right now are sub zero. windchills 5 to 10 below. the winds have diminished. only dusting 20 to 25 now. we'll have absurdly low windchills. and all of the area in pink has been expanded to include all of virginia and eastern west virginia
