you may hear a little ding as this transition takes over. that would really now be just to the south and east of washington but look at this snow back off to the west. hagerstown, these are areas with slushiness along the grassy areas. grassy surfaces didn't have a lot on the roadways because we've been so warm. we only had wet roadways reported throughout the region. we continue to see move out and it should wrap up at noon or shortly there after. then we'll worry about the wind. temperatures drop down into the 30s right now but we're seeing the wind pick up out of the north, 21 miles per hour, we've got a windchill out there. i do believe the temperature will come back up a little bit but winds are the main story, a good 50-degree plus swing in temperatures coming up tonight. i'll let you know how cold it's going to feel. >> we sent justin finch in he picks up the team coverage live in fairfax. justin? >> reporter: good morning, pat, so far we're seeing calmer conditions out here in fairfax and what we saw earlier, light wind blowing right now and snowflakes falling, almost picturesque out here but it was a different story. let's take you to video over at the redskins training center and we saw heavy hail falling out there. this was side ways stuff flowing out there. strong winds, sending hail pellets blowing in several directions and it was a kind of hail fall that if it hit you, it did hurt. i want to take you to social media. all morning we have been asking viewers to share their weather conditions with us, however i'm told that was not actually hail out there, just kind of felt like it. as you will see in the video we're showing you know, social media video, the conditions did depend on where you live. some got hit with rain, got a rain/snow mix. we saw snow swept landscapes, snow settling on grass out there and lots of snow melting on the roads. back out live, a sure 180 from this time yesterday, lots of sun and people coming out of jackets and going outside to have a bite to eat. that's not the case today. people are bundled up and roads are wet. it is a pleasant day but not as nice as yesterday. >> thank you so much. >> the other big story of the day, all eyes on the redskins and the moves they are making. you're going to see a lot of changes this coming season, especially with the general manager no longer running the team this coming after weeks of tension with the team. his past problems with alcohol as part of why he was let go. other than wishing him well, the skins saying they won't have any he had two years left on his contract. and then there are those other moves, three big names not returning desean jackson signed a to play for the tampa bay buccaneers and pierre garcon to the 49ers on a five-year contract and chris baker also going to tampa bay. however the skins did sign some players too. former cow boys defensive lineman terrell mcclain and raiders defending stacy mcgee and all agreed to come to the team. all of changes are upsetting fans. we told you hundreds of people signed up on face it is book to attend a march this morning. when our news 4 crew got to the scene, we only saw one guy. the breaking news yesterday morning. news 4's megan fitzgerald has the latest on the investigation into tracking these armed criminals. >> as soon as the suspects pried through the front door behind us here, the alarm went off but that wasn't enough to deter them. neither were the security cameras that were rolling the entire time. >> security alarms weren't enough to stop these two suspects. in less than 90 seconds, they smashed three display cases and quickly grabbed 26 guns, throwing them in a black bag but before walking out they grabbed seven long firearms hanging on the wall. montgomery county police arrived on scene but the suspects had already taken off. atf agents joined the investigation spending hours inside the shop trying to determine when guns were stolen. >> i walked in there and saw the busted up glass and all and we get it cleaned up. >> i just fear the people who got the guns, what are they going to do with the guns? >> reporter: police are offering up information leading to an arrest. >> when it comes to dieting, some do it for health reasons and others because of the latest trend. >> you might want to rethink cutting gluten from your diet. y23wny y5yy being gluten free is all the rage but a new study says it ever type ii diabetes, they studied 200,000 people and found those with high gluten intakes have lower risks of developing diabetes during a 30-year period. and fiber is known to protect against type ii diabetes. people who have celiac disease or gluten intolerant can benefit from a gluten free diet but the millions without those conditions who have given up or limited gluten for the potential health benefits, well, they face those risks. >> diets, dieting can cause stress if you're doing it every day but so can your beloved smartphone. it's us what the conditions are like in new york city. she's in central park. >> reporter: you can see the snow falling here in central park as millions of americans remain under a winter weather advisory. the snow and rain pounding nine states across the country, stretching all the way from the ohio river valley, moving up to the northeast. we've already seen delays and cancellations at area airports across the country. the bulk ever those happening here in the new york area. we still expect to see up to three, possibly four inches of snow and the reality is for those who live in new york, this is created kind of a winter weather whiplash. just yesterday the weather was as high as 61 degrees and now this. the second time this year alone that we've seen snow immediately following a day where the pe that's what a lot of people in new york and especially across the country in those other nine states are grappling with right now. the worse may be to come. even after this snow clears, we're edge of that precipitation. i am looking at cameras and a little bit of snow falling along i-81, can't rule that out. no more accumulation, we did have accumulation near an inch in some spots but mainly on the grassy area through frederick and washington counties. right here this pink right there, what we're seeing is rain that's freezing on falling snowflakes and then it hits the ground with a ding, almost like sleet. again, we're seeing grople but that's how it formed. this rain down here in southern maryland will eventually get cold enough to turn into a little snow. it's not over yet. cold air will continue to infiltrate down to the south and east. bua moving through and then the winds pick up and the cold air moves in. my goodness, temperatures in the 30s and 40s to the north and west. i think our temperature will come back up a little bit in the low 40s, right now we're in the mid-30s, we have cooled down quite a bit considering yesterday's high of 74. look at the winds right now, we've got a windchill feeling like the 20s out there. that number is going to drop dramatically as we head into the overnight. look at this, 5:00 p.m., our temperature coming back up so again it's going to feel like the 30s but look at this tonight, at midnight, we've got windchills in the teens. by tomorrow morning, single digits and lower to mid teens, if you're running the rock and roll marathon, this is what it's going to look like as you start the race. only improve to the 20s for saturday. everybody is talking about tuesday and snow on turesday we'll talk about that in detail a criminal investigation into the scandal in the marine corps. we told you service members shared nude photos of >> now all branches of the military are getting involved and say the scandal could be bigger than they originally thought. here's nbc's gabe gutierrez. >> this morning the scandal shaking the marine corps is growing. it started with nude photos of more than two dozen female service members surfacing on a private facebook group called marines united with nearly 30,000 members. now the explicit photos extend beyond just the marine corps and beyond one facebook group to an image sharing board called anon-ib, notorious for publishing nude pictures of celebrities like jennifer lawrence. >> female service members are being exploited and photos taken from their instagram feeds without their consent and having them reposted with others asking for nude photos if anybody can facebook group also sprung up with more than 3,000 members. the marine corps's commandant calling the alleged behavior demeaning and degrading. >> it's embarrassing to our corps and families and to the nation. >> reporter: in a new written statement a spokesperson said we fully expect that the discovery of marines united will motivate marines to come forward to notify their chain of command of pages like it. things may get worse before they get better. >> what these young women are dealing with is significant in the sense there's lasting reach and just 30,000 people seeing images or videos that they didn't consent to have released out into the world are there. >> reporter: two of the alleged victims have already come forward, including erika butener. >> as a marine corps veteran i'm d disgusted with the scandal. victim blaming that boys will be boys needs to stop. >> a brief members on the scandal next week. gabe gutierrez, nbc news, atlanta. breaking news right now at 11:30, voekz wagen has pleaded guilty to falsifying emissions in the diesel cars. they pleaded guilty to conspiracy and obstruction of justice charges in the last hour. it created software to make cars appear as though they were complying with federal standards even though they weren't. volkswagen agreed to pay more than $4 billion in civil and criminal penalties because of this the total cost in the scandal to the committee is estimated around five times that amount. all right. so you know how some people say things have to get worse before they get better? maybe that's the case for metro. the transit agency has given preliminary approval to raise fares and cut service to close the budget gap. the board okayed an extra 25 cents for the bus and 10 cents for rush hour rail service and rail service and ten cents added on for daily parking. despite the cuts and hikes, the metro gm says it's not all doom and gloom. >> do we have challenges? you bet. but far, far from a crisis. >> a final decision on fare increases and service cuts comes in two weeks. the changes could take effect at the beginning of july. if you're a history buff, you should check out the new harriet tubman underground railroad visitor center on the eastern shore. it's located in church creek, maryland. news 4's barbara harrison took a tour before the grand opening this weekend. >> reporter: it's peaceful here. when the wind blows and sun sparkles on blackwater marshes, this is dorchester county, maryland, where harriet tubman was born and raised. when you look at the majesty of this, water and sky, you understand why this -- her where she wanted to live. if she could only be free here. many come to the area to retrace the steps of harriet tubman's underground railroad, the route to freedom for many slaves, almost like a railroad station, this new visitor's center will be the place to begin as part of the monument to her memory. >> is there a monument? >> there is not a physical monument. the monument itself is the waterways and trails and marsh and landscape. >> reporter: inside there are scenes that recall harriet turman's life here. >> she was born in madison, next town over, about three miles away. >> reporter: the center will help navigate the 12,000 acres included in the monument. >> the landscape did have a very impact on tubman, where she learned the survival skills that made her so of tubman and posts on the wall help to con injure up who she was. >> people come here and learn about tubman and her life and say, you know, i want to learn more about bucktown village store. >> reporter: you have to be looking for it to find buckstown village. it was once a familiar place to slaves and their owners. this is the fourth generation of the meredith family to own this store. and figures in the story of harriet tub man's life. >> her first known act of defiance. >> reporter: it has many versions, all happening in this store and all describing her refusal at 12 years old to help an overseer corner a young slave boy. >> whether he sees him bolting for the door, grabs a two-pound counterweight and accidentally hits her on forehead. >> it was an injury that would plague her the rest of her life. they made the life of harriet tubman her li collecting the treasures from that period to fill the store, books and even this newspaper ad placed by her harriet owner to find her when she had run away. >> you have harriet tubman in 1849, 5 feet tall, an african-american and she was a woman, she was a slave and she was illiterate, you can't have much more going against you than that. if you look at all she was able to achieve in her life with all of those adversities, how can you not admire somebody like that? >> harriet tubman escaped from slavery in 1849 but returned to her native maryland several times to help others escape. she never failed to call the land around because of those northwesterly winds. so again, we have the snow and rain showers this morning and this afternoon and throughout this evening, windchills in the 20s and 30s, saturday morning is going to be bitterly cold if you're doing the rock and roll marathon. just now those windchills will be in the single digits and teens tomorrow morning and only going to warm up in the 20s because look at that temperature, 36 degrees. winds tonight gusting 20 to 30 miles per hour. tomorrow, they settle down tomorrow night. don't forget to set the clocks forward before you go to bed saturday or when you thursday in a letter to environmental group greenpeace. it said he recused himself in early february. americans are now drinking more bottled water than soda according to a new report. the study says
