together the sequence of events here. now it's about 8:00 this morning when police got a call for service. they were brought here to byer street in the bradbury heights section of prince george's county. when they came, they encountered two armed men. police say that shots were fired, and one of the suspects was hit. now officers performed cpr, but the man did die. now a second suspect tried to run away, but was caught and is now in custody. police did recover weapons from the scene. no officers were injured in this incident. but certainly early in their investigation they're going to be here for a while. for the time being the road is closed and we are expecting to hear from the chief at some point this morning. back to you in the studio. >> i'm molette green with breaking news out of germany. new evidence linking a christmas market attack to the prime suspect we just heard from germany's minister, saying investigators found suspect's fingerprints inside the cab of the truck. there's a manhunt across europe for this tunisian man, anis amri, suspected of mowing down those people at the crowded marketplace. new video also shows some of the police raids happening in neighborhoods there. some in immigrant communities. the marketplace reopened today without party music or bright lights in tribute to the 12 people killed and 48 others injured just days ago. barbara, the maryland department of transportation has asked the federal transportation department to use the i-95 corridor to test those cars. federal offic across the country. the first group of testing areas will be announced in early 2017. if maryland is picked, the easiest, the earliest we could see driverless cars on i-95 would be the year 2018. well starting today, there's finally some relief for montgomery county commuters. it's opening day for the new tacoma/langley crossroad transit center. 60 buses will go through that station every rush hour. helping to provide bus service to 12,000 services. this comes from a house committee on intelligence. in the new documents the pentagon points to 13 unnamed high-risk security issues. it says the former national security agency contractor caused and concern about another massive unauthorized disclosure. snowden, who took 1.5 million classified documents and left the country is believed to be still back to you, melissa. all right. thank you, molette. in the age of uber and lyft, cab companies are losing money. that's part of the reason montgomery county staple barwood cab is filing for bankruptcy. ride-sharing services are severely limiting the business. ceo lee barnes says the company is reorganizing and prepreparing to compete. barnes says the cabs will be painted black and tablets will replace the old way of paying. >> it's a box truck clipped him, which made him lose control. but police are investigating that story because it doesn't match with what some witnesses say happened. some witnesses claim that he was driving erratically before the crash. and they say he never saw the truck that hit him. well if you are still waiting for a package today might be the day it arrives. today is expected to be the busiest this year. >> the nation's largest auto club, aaa says they expect about 103 million americans, the most at any time in history, to be in holidays. now the vast majority of those people will be driving some 93 million people hitting the road over the course of the next week or so. that's about a 1.5% increase over last year. and if you're hoping to find some relief at the airports, no such luck. aaa says they expect about six million people to fly this week. and that's an increase offer in from 2.5% to 3.5% over last year. so the friendly skies might be quite crowded this year. what's driving this? aaa says the economy, gas prices remain low and consumer confidence is continuing to grow. and so more people are feeling the ability to pay for holiday travel. what are some of the most popular destinations? >> according to aaa, warm weather is certainly a draw this time of year. some of their most popular trips being booked for this week include las vegas, orlando, anaheim and san get any snow to accumulate. and though i know a lot of snow lovers like myself are not happy about that, there are plenty of people who are trying to drive long distance up i-95 who are just as happy to have no snow around. compare this to last year, wow, a year ago today, we made 62. so ten degrees even warmer than we're probably going to be today. that was the first of seven consecutive days that were all 60 or higher. keep in mind for reference, our average high temperature now is only 45 degrees. so 15 or more degrees above average every day for a straight week. including a 71 on christmas and a 70 on the 27th of december. so last year? number one warmest december on record. this december is technically exactly even. it's 47 in washington, a light south wind, a fair amount of sunshine. enough sunshine to cast a shadow. temperatures will peak out in the low 50s around the city and drift down to the 40s for the evening. tomorrow another nice day, a little cooler. northwest winds arrive later this afternoon and bring the colder air in. we'll be 30 in the morning and highs mid to upper 40s. increasing clouds late in the day, leads to our next chance for inclement weather as we get towards saturday. weather impacts today and tomorrow, nothing to worry about, breezy and cool. may be some slowdowns along the i-95 corridor coming up on saturday. could have flight delays photos released of the haggle, children new information on the two missing kids, we've talked about for many months from montgomery county. a 2-year-old, jacob is his name, a 3-year-old, sarah. haven't been seen since september 2014. their ot charged in their disappearance, but mental health professionals repeatedly found her not competent to stand trial. she remains held without bond. in loudoun county, a woman could be facing years in jail and thousands of dollars in fines for animal cruelty and neglect. loudoun animal services says kaitlyn ledger turn herself in. they say they rescued 96 chickens, two dogs, three rabbits and a number of geese, ducks and pigs from her place outside leesburg. many of those animals are up for adoption. ledger will be in court next month. right now, another recall for chocolate chips. happy holidays. giant food is recalling the nine-ounce bags of sunspire organic chocolate chips. saying the chips may contain milk, not listed on the bags. they have a best buy dates of february 24, 2017 through september 19th, 2018. at this point giant has received no reports of any primary doctor in d.c., you might have a tough time. new study from the district's department of health reveals the number of family doctors in the city has dropped nearly 15% in recent years. there are 6,000 people for every one primary care doctor in washington. and in other parts of the country, there are fewer than 3,000 people per doctor. the study found there's an increase in the number of specialty care physicians in d.c. your favorite lipstick may have lead in it the fda is urging makeup manufacturers to kraelt products that fall below their recommended amount of lead. it tested nearly 700 products, nearly all fell at or below the recommended standards for really cool thing. barbara? >> well you may not know that a tony award-winning play about the sinking of the "titanic" actually was came before the 1997 movie. but it was a big hit. and now it's back on the stage at the signature theater and joining us to tell us all about the show and their roles are florence lacy and john leslie wolf. and we're so happy to have you here. i didn't realize that. i guess i should have, because it did win a lot of awards. and we're thrilled it's back here at the signature theater. tell us about the show. it's a musical. >> it's a musical and it's got the most lush, gorgeous score. i think the broadway production was maybe a little overshadowed by the technicality of the big boat. and the score was maybe not as appreciated as it should have been. at the signature you're really going to hear the score sung beautifully. played magnificently by a 17-piece orchestra. it's a lush, gorgeous musical about the sinking of the "titanic," yes, but it's about other things, too. about the immigrants in third class on the ship. searching for a new life in america. it's about the people in second class, looking for their dreams and us in first class, surviving, not surviving because we give up our seats to the younger people. >> well tell me about your characters. these were real-life characters that were on the "titanic." >> very highly respected. he's known to be one of the originators of one of the founders of macy company. macy's. it was interesting we found out after, when they had their memorial, 20,000 people attended his memorial, their memorial. at carnegie hall in new york. and if you think back to new york how many people lived in new york, then 20,000 people would be a lot of people today. but that's how many people came to honor them after they had died. t very philanthropic. >> i understand that they actually, for anybody who saw the movie, they were actually characters in the the movie. >> they were. in the movie you see an older couple in their room, in bed together as the boat sinks. that's not exactly what happened. the last time they were ever seen on the ship they were sitting in deck chairs on the upper deck. holding hands and that's how they died together. gave up their lives so that younger people could survive. >> do we actually see the ship sink? i understand the signature theater has a big 360-degree -- >> in the round. >> view. >> in the round our director eric schaeffer has a wonderful way of focusing on the people of the story. i think he does that with every show. part of it is the confines of the theater. by doing it in the round, we don't have the ship on stage. so he has found a very unique way to tell that story. to tell the story of the sinking if it just amazing to see and so we won't give that away. >> it sounds like it is amazing. >> you two have starred together before. >> we have. >> we have. >> tell me about that. >> we played juan and eva peron, on the road for a long time. >> we played washington two or three times. we were out for three years together, maybe three, four years together. we went to switzerland. we both worked for hal prince before. i had done the broadway company of "evita." they gave me a promotion to juan peron. and i met this beautiful woman at the rehearsals for the detroit company. >> i did the broadway version of "evita" after i worked with john. >> do you sing in "titanic"? >> yes, we have a beautiful duet. >> any seats left? you're there through january what? >> january 29th. >> and there are seats. better hurry. we've for christmas. >> welcome to the embassy, great to have you here. >> thank you. >> just inside, a wreath with silk poinsettias sets the tone for the elegant interior. >> as i tell you, it's in 2004, it's only ten years old. >> there are signs of the holiday season everywhere. inside the spacious living room, beneath the chandeliers on the vaulted ceiling, a christmas tree takes center stage. amid the colorful carpets of arabesque design. on the walls are beautiful tapestry and paintings from the famed prado museum in madrid. most treasured in this room in this season -- >> it is the beautiful hand-carved nativity scene. the ambassador recently brought back with him from spain. important symbol for many for this very special season. >> so this is the time of the year where those people that live separated in different cities, from spain or in different parts of the world go back to spain and get together and celebrate the birth of jesus christ and christmas in general. >> the christmas tree is another traditional holiday symbol throughout the country. but with 15 different regions on the spanish mainland, 17 including the islands, each area will have some of its own unique ways of celebrating. and while customs vary even family to family, one thing the spanish all look forward to, the many wonderful foods they will feast on. >> in the kitchen, chef ribe perez continues to make more of the >> this is the more popular in spain. than for the first month. >> what he's making now is a cake for january the 6th. the day of the three kings. he says it's made with sweet bread dough. >> sugar and butter. >> inside there will be a a special surprise that someone will be the winner for finding. but the big christmas winners in spain are chosen on the day that kicks off the christmas season all over the country. it's the world-famous spanish christmas lottery. >> there's a big lottery, the christmas lottery. everybody buys all families play a number. >> everybody will be watching tv that day. a big tv program every single channel is at the place where the lottery is taking place. they interview the kids, the kids come out with a big prize and say, i don't know is. >> and that's to kick off for the holidays? >> yes. >> the 22nd of december. ♪ ♪ ♪ ♪ >> and of course, there's always the music. embassy staff members and their children celebrate the holidays here at the ambassador's residence by singing some of the traditional christmas songs. throughout spain, christmas is celebrated with the singing of these songs called villa secos. villa meaning the city where they were first heard. many of the tunes originated in middle ages. originally sung only at religious settings, but are now considered simple carols sung throughout the holidays. outside the windows as the sun began to set, the ambassador noted the colors reminded him of the flag of spain. with its yellow stripe between ribbons of bright red. the current flag datesck a few centuries. but through its history, spain has seen many flags. as it was settled, conquered and settled again by many civilizations. leaving it with many varied customs and traditions that have lasted. ♪ ♪ ♪ >> this music has its beginning in the traditions of the jewish communities of medievel spain. >> the trio was invited by the ambassador who also asked the director, angel gill ordonez to join us to talk about the we have our jumbo lump melon crabcakes, serve it with a potato corn hash. i'll show you how to make the crab cakes and how you can dinner or for a party. we have the crab, awesome, the mayonnaise, we're going to add in the mayonnaise. >> how hard is it to find crab this time of year? >> it's kind of hard because maryland crab is not readily available but i'm able to source it from local areas, alabama, the gulf. so i try to keep blue crab no matter what. but maryland crab is not in season at this pepper, chives. salt. we get all that in the bowl. we begin to fold it in. >> you want me to do that for you? >> sure. >> what will you be making while i do this? should i leave it in lumps? >> yes, take the spatula and just turn it. >> is there enough mayonnaise in here now? >> you don't want too much. >> one thing i'm known for, my crab cake have no filler. >> i can see they have no filler. and this is when you, how do you get them to look like that from this? >> it's all about once we going to mold them together in this mold. you can make smaller ones, if you have a little house party for the holidays. but this is entree size. >> at one point i have to get my hands in here. >> you get them in here and how long do they have to cook? >> they cook for three minutes on each side to get the golden brown color. i flash them in the oven and put them over this beautiful seasonal succotash. potatoes, corn, squash, red peppers and scallions. >> it looks delicious. >> you cook up the vegetables. >> we cook it to order. >> if i'm cooking this at home do i put it in olive oil? >> you can use olive oil or canola. you start the potatoes, add in the peppers and onions. >> potatoes go first because they take longer. >> and what kind of seasoning for that? >> salt and pepper. >> i i finish this off with a little old bays to give the maryland twist. >> this is a dush dish, this is my favorite dish on the menu. we have confit duck and brandied cherries around. here's another great dish for the holidays. clam bake, half a lobster, shrimp, roasted corn. >> a lot of any time. >> any time. >> you've got experience with lobsters, you were cooking in nantucket. >> yes, my first year we used 26,000 pounds of lobster in nantucket. unbelievable. >> is that where you got your seafood addiction? >> yes, ma'am. >> this is where jennifer and i came up with this concept. i was spending time in nantucket and everything fell into place. >> now you've gotten rid of the steaks and you do all seafood. >> i still have a great steak on the menu, but seafood is the specialty. >> it together the sequence of events here. now it's about 8:00 this morning when police got a call for service. they were brought here to byer street in the bradbury heights section of prince george's county. when they came, they encountered two armed men. police say that shots were fired, and one of the suspects was hit. now officers performed cpr, but the man did die. now a second suspect tried to run away, but was caught and is now in custody. police did recover weapons from the scene. no officers were injured in this incident. but certainly early in their investigation they're going to be here for a while. for the time being the road is closed and we are expecting to hear from the chief at some point this morning. back to you in the studio. >> i'm molette green with breaking news out of germany. new evidence linking a christmas market attack to the prime suspect we just heard from germany's minister, saying investigators found suspect's fingerprints inside the cab of the truck. there's a manhunt across europe for this tunisian man, anis amri, suspected of mowing down those people at the crowded marketplace. new video also shows some of the police raids happening in neighborhoods there. some in immigrant communities. the marketplace reopened today without party music or bright lights in tribute to the 12 people killed and 48 others injured just days ago. barbara, the maryland department of transportation has asked the federal transportation department to use the i-95 corridor to test those cars. federal offic across the country. the first group of testing areas will be announced in early 2017. if maryland is picked, the easiest, the earliest we could see driverless cars on i-95 would be the year 2018. well starting today, there's finally some relief for montgomery county commuters. it's opening day for the new tacoma/langley crossroad transit center. 60 buses will go through that station every rush hour. helping to provide bus service to 12,000 you, molette. in the age of uber and lyft, cab companies are losing money. that's part of the reason montgomery county staple barwood cab is filing for bankruptcy. ride-sharing services are severely this year. >> the nation's largest auto club, aaa says they expect about 103 million americans, the most at any time in history, to be in holidays. now the vast majority of those people will be driving some 93 million people hitting the road over the course of the next week or so. that's about a 1.5% increase over last year. and if you're hoping to find some relief at the airports, no such luck. aaa says they expect about six million people to fly this week. and that's an increase offer in from 2.5% to 3.5% over last year. so the friendly skies might be quite crowded this year. what's driving this? aaa says the economy, gas prices remain low and consumer confidence is continuing to grow. and so more people are feeling the ability to pay for holiday travel. what are some of the most popular destinations? >> according to aaa, warm weather is certainly a draw this time of year. some of their most popular trips being booked for this week include las vegas, orlando, anaheim and san to have no snow around. compare this to last year, wow, a year ago today, we made 62. so ten degrees even warmer than we're probably going to be today. that was the first of seven consecutive days that were all 60 or higher. keep in mind for reference, our average high temperature now is only 45 degrees. so 15 or more degrees above average every day for a straight week. including a 71 on christmas and a 70 on the 27th of december. so last year? number one warmest december on record. this december is technically exactly even. it's 47 in washington, a light south wind, a fair amount of sunshine. enough sunshine to cast a shadow. temperatures will peak out in the low 50s around the city and drift down to the 40s for the evening. tomorrow another nice day, a little cooler. northwest winds arrive later this afternoon and bring the colder air in. we'll be 30 in the morning and highs mid to upper 40s. increasing clouds late in the day, leads to our next chance for inclement weather haven't been seen since september 2014. their ot charged in their disappearance, but mental health professionals repeatedly found her not competent to stand trial. she remains held without bond. in loudoun county, a woman could be facing years in jail and thousands of dollars in fines for animal cruelty and neglect. loudoun animal services says kaitlyn ledger turn herself in. they say they rescued 96 chickens, two dogs, three rabbits and a number of geese, ducks and pigs from her place outside leesburg. many of those animals are up for adoption. ledger will be in court next month. right now, another recall for chocolate chips. happy holidays. giant food is recalling the nine-ounce bags of sunspire organic chocolate chips. saying the chips may contain milk, not listed on the bags. they have a best buy dates of february 24, 2017 through september 19th, 2018. at this point giant has received no reports of any primary doctor in d.c., you might have a tough time. new study from the district's department of health reveals the number of family doctors in the city has dropped nearly 15% in recent years. there are 6,000 people for every one primary care doctor in washington. and in other parts of the country, there are fewer than 3,000 people per doctor. the study found there's an increase in the number of specialty care physicians in d.c. your favorite lipstick may have lead in it the fda is urging makeup manufacturers to kraelt products that fall below their recommended amount of lead. it tested nearly 700 products, nearly all fell at or below the recommended standards for on the stage at the signature theater and joining us to tell us all about the show and their roles are florence lacy and john leslie wolf. and we're so happy to have you here. i didn't realize that. i guess i should have, because it did win a lot of awards. and we're thrilled it's back here at the signature theater. tell us about the show. it's a musical. >> it's a musical and it's got the most lush, gorgeous score. i think the broadway production was maybe a little overshadowed by the technicality of the big boat. and the score was maybe not as appreciated as it should have been. at the signature you're really going to hear the score sung beautifully. played magnificently by a 17-piece orchestra. it's a lush, gorgeous musical about the sinking of the "titanic," yes, but it's about other things, too. about the immigrants in third class on the ship. searching for a new life in america. it's about the people in second class, looking for their dreams and us in first class, surviving, not surviving because we give up our seats to the younger people. >> well tell me about your characters. these were real-life characters that were on the "titanic." >> very highly respected. he's known to be one of the originators of one of the founders of macy company. macy's. it was interesting we found out after, when they had their memorial, 20,000 people attended his memorial, their memorial. at carnegie hall in new york. and if you think back to new york how many people lived in new york, then 20,000 people would be a lot of people today. but that's how many people came to honor them after they had died. t very philanthropic. >> i understand that they actually, for anybody who saw the movie, they were actually characters in the the movie. >> they were. in the movie you see an older couple in their room, in bed together as the boat sinks. that's not exactly what happened. the last time they were ever seen on the ship they were sitting in deck chairs on the upper deck. holding hands and that's how they died together. gave up their lives so that younger people could survive. >> do we actually see the ship sink? i understand the signature theater has a big 360-degree -- >> in the round. >> view. >> in the round our director eric schaeffer has a wonderful way of focusing on the people of the story. i think he does that with every show. part of it is the confines of the theater. by doing it in the round, we don't have the ship on stage. so he has found a very unique way to tell that story. to tell the story of the sinking if it just amazing to see and so we won't give that away. >> it sounds like it is amazing. >> you two have starred together before. >> we have. >> we have. >> tell me about that. >> we played juan and eva peron, on the road for a long time. >> we played washington two or three times. we were out for three years together, maybe three, four years together. we went to switzerland. we both worked for hal prince before. i had done the broadway company of "evita." they gave me a promotion to juan peron. and i met this beautiful woman at the rehearsals for the detroit company. >> i did the broadway version of "evita" after i worked with john. >> do you sing in "titanic"? >> yes, we have a beautiful duet. >> any seats left? you're there through january what? >> january 29th. >> and there are seats. better hurry. we've live separated in different cities, from spain or in different parts of the world go back to spain and get together and celebrate the birth of jesus christ and christmas in general. >> the christmas tree is another traditional holiday symbol throughout the country. but with 15 different regions on the spanish mainland, 17 including the islands, each area will have some of its own unique ways of celebrating. and while customs vary even family to family, one thing the spanish all look forward to, the many wonderful foods they will feast on. >> in the kitchen, chef ribe perez continues to make more of the >> this is the more popular in spain. than for the first month. >> what he's making now is a cake for january the 6th. the day of the three kings. he says it's made with sweet bread dough. season all over the country. it's the world-famous spanish christmas lottery. >> there's a big lottery, the christmas lottery. everybody buys all families play a number. >> everybody will be watching tv that day. a big tv program every single channel is at the place where the lottery is taking place. they interview the kids, the kids come out with a big prize and say, i don't know is. >> and ambassador's residence by singing some of the traditional christmas songs. throughout spain, christmas is celebrated with the singing of these songs called villa secos. villa meaning the city where they were first heard. many of the tunes originated in middle ages. originally sung only at religious settings, but are now considered simple carols sung throughout the holidays. outside the windows as the sun began to set, the ambassador noted the colors reminded him of the flag of spain. with its yellow stripe between ribbons of bright red. the current flag datesck a few centuries. but through its history, spain has seen many flags. as it was settled, conquered and settled again by many civilizations. leaving it with many varied customs and traditions that have lasted. ♪ ♪ ♪ >> this music restaurant. good to have you with us. are you cooking turkey this weekend for yourself? >> i am not. >> you say we ought to think out of the box. >> yes, ma'am. absolutely. >> what, first of all, you are well trained, you've cooked a little bit of everything all you've got your training at the institute of -- >> institute of -- and you also were the steak man capital grill. >> that's where i met my partner, jennifer, that's how we started the promg of coming up with this concept. >> edward, tell us what we're having here for thanksgiving, not thanksgiving, christmas dinner. >> christmas, yes. we have our jumbo lump melon crabcakes, serve it with a potato corn hash. i'll show you how to make the crab cakes and how you can dinner or for a party. we have the crab, awesome, the mayonnaise, we're going to add in the mayonnaise. >> how hard is it to find crab this time of year? >> it's kind of hard because maryland crab is not readily available but i'm able to source it from local areas, alabama, the gulf. so i try to keep blue crab no matter what. but maryland crab is not in season at this pepper, chives. salt. we get all that in the bowl. we begin to fold it in. >> you want me to do that for you? >> sure. >> what will you be making while i do this? should i leave it in lumps? >> yes, take the spatula and just turn it. >> is there enough mayonnaise in here now? >> you don't want too much. >> one thing i'm known for, my crab cake have no filler. >> i can see they have no filler. and this is when you, how do you get them to look like that from this? >> it's all about once we going to mold them together in this mold. you can make smaller ones, if you have a little house party for the holidays. but this is entree size. >> at one point i have to get my hands in here. >> you get them in here and how long do they have to cook? >> they cook for three minutes on each side to get the golden brown color. i flash them in the oven and put them over this beautiful seasonal succotash. potatoes, corn, squash, red peppers and scallions. >> it looks delicious. >> you cook up the vegetables. >> we cook it to order. >> if i'm cooking this at home do i put it in olive oil? >> you can use olive oil or canola. you start the potatoes, add in the peppers and onions. >> potatoes go first because they take longer. >> and what kind of seasoning for that? >> salt and pepper. >> i i finish this off with a little old bays to give the maryland twist. >> this is a dush dish, this is my favorite dish on the menu. we have confit duck and brandied cherries around. here's another great dish for the holidays. clam bake, half a lobster, shrimp, roasted corn. >> a lot of any time. >> any time. >> you've got experience with lobsters, you were cooking in nantucket. >> yes, my first year we used 26,000 pounds of lobster in nantucket. unbelievable. >> is that where you got your seafood addiction? >> yes, ma'am. >> this is where jennifer and i came up with this concept. i was spending time in nantucket and everything fell into place. >> now you've gotten rid of the steaks and you do all seafood. >> i still have a great steak on the menu, but seafood is the specialty. >> it looks delicious and i can't wait to taste it i guess people will feel very special, if you find crab meat to make crab cakes. >> i know can you get it from whole foods and local seafood markets. >> you want me to hold that. >> i'll hold it so folks can see it. >> and then on top of that you put this beautiful. >> beautiful golden brown crab cake. yes, ma'am. >> you know how to handle that. >>
