we're getting information about this. what we know is that at least several juveniles got onto a bus, we believe in northeast d.c., within the last hour, assaulted the driver of that metro bus and then took off on the bus. we know there were several minor accidents for the short distance that these people had this bus. at this point we know the driver is safe. he was injured. he's being treated right now at the intersection of minnesota avenue in northeast d.c. that is where this bus stopped. what we don't know at this point is whether there were any passengers on that bus. we don't know where the suspects are at this point. either we do know a knife was involved in the jacking of this bus. so at this point i can tell you we have a crew headed to the scene there. we're working with d.c. police and metro transit police to get more information about this. as soon as we learn more details, we'll have that for you from the lye desk. >> all right. thank you, aaron. firefighter the seco your commute will be db csx service derailment in northeast washington only three trains will run on that line today. all three lanes will make all stops. some of those mangled rail cars from monday are still on the tracks and crews hope to clear them today. csx says yesterday they removed the chemicals that had leaked as a result of that derailment. as we speak the feds are lighting into metro yet again. this is a familiar line from the ntsb this morning, safety is not a big enough priority at metro. they're in a break right now from a hearing that's going on at the national transportation safety board headquarters. at the end we expect to hear a probable cause of the smoke incident from january 2015 at l' enfant plaza. we know one woman died, 91 people hurt. the biggest reveal so far me passengers to look for the source of smoke. our transportation reporter adam tuss in that hearing right now. ntsb saying if metro followed proper procedure, the train would not have been stuck in that tunnel at that time little more than a year ago. metro chair focusing and then takes its eye off the ball. all action plans we've seen are necessary the ntsb says but not sufficient for long-term safety improvements. this hearing will pick up again in just a couple of minutes. our adam tuss has been tweeting about findings. we expect to hear a result probable cause of last year's smoke incident. that's the latest from the live desk. what a night it was. the threat of severe weather last night has given way to cloudy skies this morning. but tom kierein, it was quite a lot of damage. we got a and we're hoping that we're going to dry out soon. when is that going to happen? >> well, it has been happening over the last few hours things have dried out. in fact sun beginning to break out a little bit. there's the capitol gleaning a little bit of sun, breaking through the overcast. you'll need a light shirt, slacks and even sunglasses in the afternoon. but have the umbrella ready. you can ditch the warm coat because we're going to have mild temperatures in the upper 60s through the rest of the afternoon. right now storm team 4 radar not showing anymore showers. just a few scattered sprinkles here. parts of loudon county and into falkier county. but some other showers now beginning to form here right along southern west virginia into the carolinas. those will likely be moving in but not until later this afternoon. i got new timing on that coming just a couple of minutes. d darcy spencer is live now with a look at some of the tree damage. >> reporter: tom, we've been reporting about the damage all morning long. we want to show you this house here in upper marlboro. first off, this huge tree fell during what we believe was the bedroom of the homeowner. he says he had gone out for an errand last night and that probably saved his life. >> this would have been my bedroom. and there's my bed. i would have been -- oh, i'd been -- oh, god, i'd had stuff stuck all through my chest. >> reporter: lester counting his blessings after a huge tree smashed into the back of his upper marlboro home during monday night's fierce storm. >> neighbors say a wind came through, a gust. they estimate must have been 70 miles an hour or more. >> reporter: a vietnam veteran. >> tubes coming out of my back -- >> reporter: he became very emotional talking about everything he lived through. even the september 11th attack on the pentagon. >> i missed getting blown up by ten minutes. and now this. >> reporter:rm the storm hit. but he had gone out to pay his tax bill. all you have are the clothes on your back? >> until i can get in there if i can ever get in there i can get clothes. >> reporter: he and his wife have lived here for 25 years. nothing like this has ever happened before. >> what can you do? i wasn't -- nobody's injured. and everything can be replaced. >> reporter: he has a positive attitude about this. in fact, his wife and daughter were inside the house at the time. fortunately they were in a separate part of the house. they were not hurt. the dogs were not hurt. and i was just speaking to him again as far as going and paying that tax bill. he says they took his money, but they saved his life. back to you. >> good way to look at it. thanks so much, darcy. three cars damaged in northwest d.c. from a tree that came crashing down on them. crews spent much of the morning w fellow street near 13th street. the tree was cut up and put in a woodchiper. d.c. police tell us thankfully no one was hurt. and american serviceman killed, shot dead by isis. it happened in iraq today. isis fighters attacked a u.s. post in the city of irbil with truck bombs and guns. american forces have already responded with more than 20 air strikes. it was the third u.s. combat death in iraq since last october. manassas city police want you to keep an eye out for a suspicious man who made contact with a young girl. police sent us a sketch of the person of interest. let's have a look at it. they say last thursday the man approached a 9-year-old girl outside her apartment on main street. the man is in his 20s, they think. he spoke to the girl for a bit and then left in a van. the 9-year-old was not hurt. police say it's not clear what the man's intentions were but they do want to speak with him. a developing story now, prince william county police are investigating a murder chesapeake drive in dumfries. kristin wright has more on the investigation. >> reporter: police spending much of the morning here at orchard landing apartments. we know one man is dead. police came out around 1:00 this morning, they found a man shot to death. we talked to a woman who lives here just a little while ago. we asked her did she hear anything or see anything. she said, well, yes, in the middle of the night police came to her door knocking and wanted to know what she saw and if she heard anything. so far no suspect information from police. in dumfries, news 4. to politics now and a few virginia elections. today voters in the city of fairfax will elect a mayor, incumbent mayor scott silverthorn faces a challenge from thomas, clifton, vienna, haymarket and the plains also holdi ining elections today. to the pex elections, indiana voters are casting their primary voters now. 57 republican delegates and 92 democratic delegates are at stake. a new nbc news/survey monkey poll out this morning shows gop front-runner donald trump expanding his lead. trump now has a 34% lead over ted cruz among registered republicans. the poll has a 2-point margin of error. it also shows more than eight out of ten americans believe cruz only tapped former rival carly fiorina as a v.p. to reinvigorate his campaign. our new poll also shows donald trump is catching up in a potential general election matchup against hillary clinton. among democratic candidates clinton now has her widest lead over bernie sanders since march, 54 to 40%. still a majority of likely democratic voters say they would like sanders to stay in the race through july's democratic convention. again, the poll has a nearly 2-point margin of teacher will make history when president obama honors her as the national teacher of the year. this is footage from last year's ceremony at the white house. she'll receive the award at an afternoon ceremony alongside all of the 2106 finalists. >> d.c. police are looking for three men who jumped through the drive-thru window at a mcdonald's. police say the man forced at gunpoint an employee to unlock cash registers and a safe. this happened on saturday morning. and unlikely hike in bethesda has police searching for a bathtub bandit. they say the suspect used a fake credit card and fake id to steal a very expensive bathtub. >> didn't like how it felt. and sure enough by the time i got upstairs and we figured it out, he was gone. >> this is the suspect montgomery county police are looking for right now. they say he used the stolen information to buy the designer tub at union hardware in if you have any information, you should contact police. today, montgomery county council members will vote on a plan bethesda development that has angered some neighbors. the residential and retail development is proposed in west bart in south bethesda. it's not far from the boundary line with the district. residents in that neighborhood have protested the development saying it's too big and will change the community's character. one of the developers insists he's worked with neighbors to make the project fit. this story is getting a lot of attention online this morning. there's controversy over an old navy ad depicting an interracial family. this is the ad, it shows a white dad, a black mom and their child. well, apparently some people took offense at the ad and called it disgusting and said they would stop shopping at old navy. dozens of interrational couples responded by posting pictures of their mixed families. the families also thanked old nav its ad. the male model in the ad even tweeted that he was proud to be representing interrational love. we're working for you all month long with stories to help you and latest now, pat. >> reporter: barbara, i'm in the 4300 block of nanny helen b boroughs now in northeast. i want to direct yourself to the clown gas station over there. you can see the metro bus that has its lights flashing. now, police say a short time ago three juveniles jacked this bus. they said they had a weapon that the bus driver was injured, but i'm told that the injuries are nonlife threatening. i saw an ambulan scene a short time ago. it's unclear as to how many people were hurt in this, exactly where it began and how far they drove this bus before they wrecked it here at this clown gas station. they ran in what appears to be some sort of a concrete barrier on the other side. and the bus is now sort of wedged in over near that dumpster on the far side there. there are scores of cops here from metro transit police, from metropolitan police, they're working the scene, they're investigating it. it's unclear as to whether or not the juveniles into custody or whether or not they may have been hurt as well. again, this is what we know. a short time ago police say three juveniles jacked this metrobus. they had a weapon. we're told that the metrobus driver was injured in this, that the kids rode the b other werecars, we're not sure. we're not sure how many people may have been injured, i saw a number of ambulances pulling up and away from the scene, but we don't have numbers on that just yet. the bus itself is wedged over a low what appears to be concrete wall over there. and police are surrounding it now. trying to sort things out. we're on the scene. we'll >> yeah. too bad. but there's still hope. >> give us some good news about the weather. >> may get a little more sun before we get more rain. a little. we'll take every little glimpse of sun we can get. the gloomy weather continues, mostly gloomy the rest of the afternoon. storm team 4 radar shows most of the rain is gone. just a few lingeripr north and east. temperatures right now are in the into the mid and upper 60s most of the area. it's in the low 60s farther north and west in the bay low to mid 60s most areas. ma rina, one of our production assistants university of maryland student was walking along the sidewalk and heard a giant crash. this tree toppled over there on the ground at the university of maryland. this was just a couple of hours ago. the ground is so saturated. some of those old trees with the weak roots they can just topple over. and that's going to be happening perhaps over the next couple of days. we'll stay dry until about 5:00. then some showers move on in. we'll be in the upper 60s. hour by hour timing here's the shower activity beginning to get close to the metro area around 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. moving on through. there may be a few rumbles of thunder as they track on through between 5:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. and then after that most of the showers cross the bay, move off to the north and east by 11:00 p.m. and then by dawn tomorrow might have a few sprinkles starting off early tuesday morning. forecast a little sunshine in and out today, but the showers end late tonight off and on. and then tomorrow some sun in the morning then some clouds in the afternoon. highs again upper 60s. then thursday and into friday chance of showers both days and cooler highs low 60s. but drying out just in time for the weekend and just in time for mother's day, barbara and pat, just for you. >> all right. thank you. >> thanks, tom. an incredible story of survival after the break, an infant pulled out of a collapsed building after being trapped for 80 hours. and we're going to show you live pictures of national harbor, where the new mgm casino will soon be complete and open in just a few minutes we talk to the casino's general manager and to the woman in charge of the great resurants coming to the ta thank you so much. did you say honey? not at all mmm you're all right bud? never better i don't know if he likes that. yeah part of the complete breakfast new details coming into the live desk about this hijacking of a metro bus in d.c. this morning. first we've learned d.c. police do have a suspect in custody at this point. the other important piece of information we've learned is that one person was hit by this bus that was carjacked within the last hour or so. we know that person is in critical condition right now and has been taken to prince george's county hospital. i'll back up for you just a bit here. it was within the last hour we learned that several juveniles got onto a metrobus in northeast d.c., stabbed the bus driver with a screwdriver and then took off on the bus that of minnesota avenue and nanny helen boroughs in northeast. at this point we know the bus driver is being treated. we don't believe his injuries are life threatening. again, that one suspect in custody. and police are trying to figure out how many people may have been involved and whether other suspects are on the loose at this point. we have our pat collins on the scene there. you saw him a few moments ago. he's gathering more information. we have several reporters working the story at this hour. as we get new information, barbara and pat, we'll bring it to you. thank you, aaron. right now a miracle recovery for a baby in kenya. more than three days after a seven-story building collapsed, a little girl has been pulled from the rubble. the red cross says she was buried for about 80 hours. she was wrapped in a blanket inside a bucket. the child was dehydrated but otherwise had no visible injuries. 23 people were killed in the collapse on friday, more than 90 others are reported missing. jamaican police are working to find out who killed two american missionaries over the weekend. one of the widows says her husband spent h others. >> built small houses for people that are in unfortunate circumstances. and we bring medical teams in every quarter for, i think, the last 20 years. >> randy and harold lived and worked on the island nation. their bodies were found along a rural road where they were traveling on motorbikes. no suspects have yet been identified. and we're expecting more dramatic testimony today in the murder case of a university of mary washington student, the victim, grace mann, was a popular student, activist on the fredericksburg activist. believes he strangled her during a paranoid delusion. they want jurors to find him not guilty by reason of insanity. prosecutors say breel changed his clothes and shaved his face after the murder. they argue those are not the actions of an insane person. the nation's airlines are profits have tripled over the last couple of years. the result of packed planes, all the fees you have to pay and cheaper fuel. however, as nbc's tom costello reports there is some good news for air travelers as well. >> reporter: for the nation's airlines the skies are awfully friendly these days. nearly $26 billion in profits in 2015. with those hated baggage fees accounting for nearly $4 billion. >> i don't like to have to pay for a bag to be checked, if i'm going somewhere i'm bringing a bag. >> reporter: but it's the rock bottom oil prices made fueling the plane cheaper. >> jet fuel is anywhere from first to second cost dependsing on how high it is. >> reporter: so what are the airlines doing with that cash? replacing aging aircraft, on average one a day, upgrading airport lounges and paying employees more, also adding new mobile phone apps, in-flight wi-fi and streaming entertainment. the good news for passengers, hopper.com reports air fares now at their lowest lev some examples, the average air fare into new york this april is $224, $14 cheaper than a year ago. into denver $26 cheaper this year. $30 cheaper into chicago. $42 cheaper into l.a.x. and into orlando $55 cheaper. more pocket money for hotels, meals and entertainment. now, heading into summer air fares are expected to rise slightly but still remain lower than last year. even for most international destinations. >> so what we expect is that air fare will peak in june and then tend to slide through the summer. >> reporter: but be warned cheaper air fares means planes will be packed this summer. >> meanwhile the tsa admits it still doesn't have enough screeners to handle the record 2 million people who fly every day. that means you may have to deal with those long security lines until at least september. look at this. well, it shouldn't be too much longer before this kind of flyover over the new mgm an animation but the real deal. and they'll be ready to deal at the tables inside the $1.3 billion casino resort set on the banks of the potomac river and prince george's county. joining us to bring us up to speed on the progress being made on this major new resort are general manager bill and allison who is vice president of food and beverage. welcome. >> thank you. >> thank you. >> so we've been talking about this a long time now. looks like it's getting close enough to actually see the real vision. so where do wu stand now? >> yes. >> new year's eve. all right. we are looking forward to it. what's going on inside right now? >> so the building is being enclosed right now. and so we're starting all the fitouts in the casi theater, the hotel rooms, all the internal interior work is going on right now. so we have a lot of -- >> being framed out. >> that's right. >> allison, you can tell us about what we can expect. i understand you have a new concept for the restaurants that are going to be at the casino. >> we do. it's called national market. we think it is definitely on-trend with the way a lot of people want to eat right now. they want to be able to have chef restaurant quality food but very quickly in sort of a fast, casual atmosphere. so we have a variety of concepts, everything from fried chicken and donuts to the best pizza in the united states, to tacos and burritos and ice cream shop. we have a great beer and wine bar, we'll be able to do tastings. sandwiches, su shi, it's going to be fantastic. >> any fancy dining restaurants at all? >> we have great celebrity chef partners for signature fine dining restaurants. obviously jose andreas will be doing his very first seafood only concept. both brian and michael this is their first joint concept together. and then wonderful marcus sam l samuelson first venture outside new york city, a little late-night, speak easy element, live music. >> little something for everybody. >> something for everyone for sure. >> you started the hiring process already, right? >> we have. we currently have about 60 employees. we just kicked off the start of our first dealers school in conjunction with prince george's county community college. that starts may 16th. and so if you want to learn more about the dealers school, it's a great, great job. where else can you come to work and play cards every day and get paid for it? all right. thanks so much all of you. well, we're going to get a little sun this afternoon. how much sun and how long will it last? take a look at the radar. tom will be bac vere rain arri we're going to go back now to more on that breaking news from northeast d.c. where a metrobus was jacked. we have team coverage. let's go to pat collins. what have you learned, pat? >> reporter: we're learning some new things here. we're in the 4300 block of nanny he helen boroughs, you can see the metrobus. police say a short time ago this bus was jacked by a young man. they say the young man got on the bus and put a needle-nose pliers to the neck of the bus driver. the bus driver managed to get off the bus. we're told that the bus driver has some back injuries but we're expected that the driver will be okay. at that point they say the suspect got behind the wheel of the bus and started around. in the 3800 block of j street we are told this bus struck a pedestrian. we're told that that pedestrian has some life threatening injuries. the bus continued to go around and eventually ended up crashing here at this clown gas station. police say they have a suspect in custody. we're told that that suspect may have been taken to the hospital as well for some treatment. it's unclear as to what the bus did between the time it hit that pedestrian and the time it crashed here. it may have hit another vehicle en route here. again, there are a lot of police on the scene. they're trying to sort through all this. we are getting pieces, dribs and drabs, if you will, of information as they become available. let's go now to kristin wright at the scene where the pedestrian was struck. >> reporter: right. and not only that, also we just the bus behind us who says she was also hit. we're right near kennel worth park at j street. you see this white bus here. it's the seabury connector, they transport seniors throughout the district. they had just dropped off a group of seniors down the street at a clinic. they were down the street when she actually saw the metro bus and saw the kids assaulting the bus driver on the bus. she started to call 911. obviously knowing that something was wrong. and then she says she was hit by the metro bus once those juveniles took the bus over. there are three seniors on the bus here. everybody okay, a little shaken. there's some damage to the side of the bus that we could see just a little while ago. as you can see her now talking with metro police, giving her account of what she saw and what happened. again, she -- the bus driver here saw juveniles, she says, trying to -- assaultingat she started to call 911. and then she was hit, her bus, was hit by that metro bus. three seniors on board here. everybody okay. of course we'll have more information as soon as we get it for you from this location. we also understand that one person as pat mentioned was hit, a pedestrian, we don't know exactly if that's this location, still working that out. but one person was hit and critically injured and taken to the hospital. more to come. >> all right. kristin wright, thank you. this solar powered airplane on the ground in arizona. the plane doesn't use fuel, instead it has thousands of solar cells and gets all of its energy from the sun. you can see it there. the solar impulse landed last night. it's traveling all around the world. the plane will make two more stops here in the u.s. and then go onto europe and possibly africa. is it still raining outside, tom? >> well, i'm going to tell you, not schools in particular, but i have always volunteered. and my main thing is that as a child the dream is the most important thing that a kid can have because no matter where you may be physically, where your mind can go is limitless. and so our goal is to show them that, you know, where you are does not necessarily mean that's where you have to stay. >> well, did you dream that you were going to start off >> i'm going to tell you i always knew that i wanted to be an actor, but i didn't know how to get there. and so, you know, being able to come close to these kids and touch them and let them know that their dreams aren't that far away is something that, you know, we hope to encourage. and really impart on them. >> you've had some major supporting and starring roles. any favorite? you can say the one you're doing now for later -- >> i'm going to tell you, mysteries allure on nbc. i don't think i have a favorite. they all in some way, shape or form rounded out the body of work that i have that i'm very proud of. and each one i get something that i learn from and i walk away with. >> you were in an nbc drama "deception" that did very well. >> yep, as well with megan good. that was an awesome show. i'm just very, very blessed. and so now it's time to share your blessings especially with the next generation that's coming up. and it makes me feel good i can do that with kids from my own hometown. >> that's wonderful to hear. you are detective billy soto you here today, the mysteries of laura, you play that part with deborah messing. >> that's right. i'm enjoying having a great time running around new york city, catching criminals and solving crimes. and people love watching the show. it's a fun show. it's a light hearted cop show. they get to watch the show with us. and feel like they're also solving the crime along with us. it's been a great ride. hopefully we'll get some more. >> great to have you here back at home. >> thank you so much. >> have a great time tonight. >> yep, the gala tonight. 15-year gala. so i'm very happy to be a part of it. >> laz alonso, thank you so much for coming. >> my pleasure. >> pat. thank you, barbara. some news now about your sleep. there's a new report that says therapy, not drugs, can help cure you of your chronic insomnia and improve your life. the american college of physicians is recommending several things. first of all, don't nap because that interferes with your sleep cycle and a regular bedtime. secondly, really truly eliminate distractions like your phone when you're in bed. going to take you chief going to update us on that bus jacking in northeast d.c. >> the bus proceeds to the next stop about 90 seconds. when the bus comes to the stop, 800 block of kennelworth, the suspect then attacks the driver. all the passengers flee from the bus immediately when they see the attack going on. the bus driver is able to get free and get off the bus. the suspect then during the attack pulls some sort of weapon, we don't know what it is yet, takes -- shuts the door and takes the bus. so the suspect drives the bus over here to minnesota avenue and enters the gas station here on the corner, goes over the curb and strikes a pedestrian. right now we know that all of the individuals involved are adult males. there are no juveniles involved. there's only one suspect, we have that suspect in custody. police officers arrived on the scene when the bus comes to a stop here the gas station are able to get the suspect off bus. so he is in our custody. the pedestrian that was struck has been pronounced. so he is deceased. right now all we know is that all our adult males, no juveniles involved and no second suspect. >> and what about the weapon? do you know? >> we do have a weapon, i don't want to get into details, but he did have a weapon of some sort. >> where was the pedestrian struck? >> on the parking lot of the gas station here. >> so as the bus came to a stop here and crashed it hit the pedestrian first? >> so the bus mounted the curb into the parking lot and then mounted another curb in the parking lot and struck a pedestrian. >> how was the suspect taken into custody? was he lingering here? did he attempt to flee? >> officers were on the scene very quickly. the metro driver pushed the emergency button, so officers are here on the scene quickly and they were able to get him off the bus after just a couple minutes. >> what is his condition? >> the suspect appeared to me to be very distraught and violent. officers when they took him off the bus. >> was he taken to the hospital as well? >> i believe he was. i believe he was. >> was someone dragged? or was that the pedestrian that was struck? >> i don't have those details. all i know there was a person struck. >> this lasted very short period of time then? >> the entire duration of the event was less than three minutes. >> what can you tell us about the person who was killed? >> i can't tell you anything right now. all i can tell you is that an adult male. we haven't even confirmed an identity yet. >> what do you make of this, chief? >> you know, it's a bizarre incident, very uncharacteristic for someone to, you know, try and take a bus and attack a bus driver. as we said the whole incident occurred in less than three minutes. the officers did a great job in bringing the suspect into custody and not being injured because he was armed with a weapon. and, you know, as you know everything on the bus is captured by video. so we have video of the entire incident. >> thank you, chief. >> thank you. >> the suspect where again?
