Many women with depression face a difficult decision, continue their medication, potentially putting their child at risk or jeopardizing their own Mental Health by going off the drugs. Dr. Joshua weiner joins us with more. You have read this study . I have. I think a lot of people are concerned about the rapid rise in autism rates. The cdcs most recent study shows 1 in 50 to 1 in 68 children in this country has an autism spectrum disorder. This is generating a lot of important buzz. What this study looked at was 150,000 women in canada. It looked at their medical records and followed their children from birth to age 7. They wanted to find out were those women who took antidepressants during pregnancy more likely to have a child later diagnosed with autism . The study found that in general 0. 7 of women who either did not take antidepressant medication or took the antidepressant medications only for the first trimester had a kid who went on to develop autism. However, women who took the medications in either the second or third trimesters, their risk was 1. 2 . So there was about an 80 risk of having a child later diagnosed with autism, but the absolute numbers are still relatively low. 80 sounds high, i think. 80 increased risk, but 80 of 0. 7 . We want to talk more about this im sure a lot of people are anxious about this, maybe finding out later than they would have stopped taking the medication. Stick around. In what is a time of great expectation and anxiety, a new study found a connection between women who take antidepressants during their pregnancy and autism. Bring us up to date again about the study. This study found an 80 risk of kids whose mothers took antidepressants, in particular the serotonin reuptake inhibiters during the second and third trimesters of pregnancy. The risk was 1. 2 chance of them developing autism, versus those who did not take the medications. We have heard for years and years, whatever you eat and ingest goes right through to the baby. We talk about it with tobacco and alcohol. Why not this . This is a question why are we seeing this rise in youautism rates. I dont want people who are out there taking these medications, and has a child with autism that you did something to your child. One there are risks associated with not taking medications during pregnancy if youre depressed. In this country about 13 of women take an antidepressant during pregnancy. Untreated pregnant women have a 15 increased risk of making a suicide attempt. What i tell my patients is if we can avoid giving you any medications during pregnancy, thats what im going for. I would prefer that. But you need to weigh the risks with the benefits. If youre really depressed, moderately to severely depressed, the medications of benefits outweigh the risks. Would recommend alternative treatment for pregnant women other than medication . You want to recommend therapy first. Exercise. Making sure theyre sleeping well. Just generally having good health habits. If those things dont work, and somebody is really getting worse, then you have to consider medication. Always you want to try things other than medication, especially in a pregnant woman. As soon as you know youre pregnant, report to your doctor that youre on these medications. Have these conversations with your doctor, talk about the pros and cons, make the best decision for you. Cant give a blanket statement about what everybody should do. Its an individual choice.
