a home in the 1,100 block of 18th street early this morning. it was a neighbor who alerted police. right now police are saying her death is suspicious. we expect more information later this morning and we'll have more on this tonight on news 4 at 4:00 5:00 and 6:00. a manhunt is under way in montgomery county for the suspect in a violent gas station robbery. chopper 4 captured the aftermath on tape and news 4's molette green joins us live with the latest from the scene. >> reporter: barbara good morning. yes, crime scene tape all gone now. this gas station is back open for business. no sign as you said of the suspect. now, police were able to watch the surveillance video inside the gas station which captures the robbery go down but the suspect had his face covered. all of this happening during a shift change this morning just after 6:30 here at colesville road and university boulevard. it became dramatic scene with the victim stuffing a head injury after getting hit on the head with the gun. the suspect's gun. and the victim then made his way across the street where he was eventually able to get some medical attention. now, montgomery county police tell us how all of this started. >> male clerk stated to officers that during a transition when he was getting off and another clerk was showing up for work male suspect announced a robbery, he had a black what appeared to be a semiautomatic handgun. >> reporter: the suspect then took off on foot and headed in the direction of montgomeryh gomgomery blair high school. chopper 4 was over the scene when police were working with the school to get arriving children inside as quickly as possible. for most of the morning there was restricted access to the school as police searched inside and around that area for any sign of an armed man. the school is back open for normal operations this morning. now, the suspect is still out here. misonly are working with a very limited description. they tell us they are still talking with the victim this morning to try to get more information. live this morning in silver spring i'm molette green, back to you. i'm melissa mollet at the live desk. we're waiting to see if a former fairfax county police spokesman will post bond to get out of jail. william bud walker is being held for possessing child pornography. during a hearing this morning, his bond was set at $15,000, though his attorney argued it was too high and should be lower. if he is released walker will be barred from using computers and would not be able to have unsupervised contact with children. his wife was in court to show support. good news for a boy who had his wheelchair stolen. through social media and a radio station, someone offered to donate one to the family. the boy's mother says she leaves the wheelchair in the lobby every night so she can carry her son up to the second floor apartment. when she went to get the cheremond morning it was gone. anyone with information is asked to call police. tom? we'll tell you where you can police are telling us a massive family argument is to blame for a deadly shooting in phoenix. police and swat stormed the home yesterday after an hour's long standoff and inside they found five victims, three brothers one of their wives and the men's mother. two other women were inside the home at the time they told police they ran out of the home while shots were being fired with a three-year-old and an infant in tow. police are calling those two women heroes. i'm melissa mollet at the live desk. derrick ward just talked to the new fire chief and he and the mayor announced new plans for recruitment. >> we've gotten a opportunity to bring on more firefighters more d.c. residents, we're excited about that. the mayor has made a commitment and i have an opportunity to make that an announcement. >> part of the plan includes buying a new fleet of emergency vehicles over the next five years. you can register online to take the fire and ems entrance exam on may 20. the exam is set for june 13. >> melissa, thanks. new today, mission complete. spacex's "dragon" successfully docked at the international space station. the spacecraft delivered vital supplies like spare parts and an italian espresso machine that came just in time for breakfast around 6:55 this morning. it's national parks week so get out there and take advantage of free admissions all over the country this week. there are so many options in our area you probably know what they are in the dmv, there we are. in virginia you have great falls park. you also have the robert e. lee memorial. in maryland this's antietam national battlefield and the clara barton house. in d.c. the national mall rock creek park and the sewell belmont house and museum. if you need more ideas, head to our facebook page we've posted a link on finding parks near you. support for these parks is critical. tracie potts as a look at the long hours and billions of dollars it takes to keep them up and running. >> reporter: barbara, this kicks off national parks week and this weekend all of the national parks including great falls are going to be free. most of them already are, the historic site, the monuments. those that have admissions charges will be waived this weekend. they are trying to not only draw in millions of visitors but also to draw attention to the fact that some of these parks are in desperate need of repair. there are $11.5 billion worth of maintenance projects sitting on the back burner now, deferred maintenance because the park service similar my doesn't have the money to take care of the crumbling walls and trails that need repair and facilities that need to be beefed up. they're asking congress they're asking individuals and businesses and foundations to match that money. in the meantime we've learned here in virginia it's over $600 million, about half that in maryland a lot of money to make sure that these national treasures are kept up to date. barbara? you like coffee? listen up. you'll be able to get s'mores in your frappe chino. starbucks will roll out the frozen blend on april 28 but only for a limited time. as you would expect, it consists of a marshmallow flavored base, whipped cream, chocolate sauce. so we had brownie flavored beer. now the s'mores frappe chino. >> i didn't like it when i thought we would have graham crackers floating around but it looks like on top. chocolate. >> sign barbara up i'll take one, too. coming up the big concert planned for the national mall and what you should know if you want to attend. and new this morning, a man accused of jumping the fence at the white house in court right now. the action being taken that could put this case to a close. breaking news. the maryland man who jumped the white house fence last october just pled guilty in court. megan mcgrath was inside the courtroom and she joins us with more on what happens next. megan? just a short time ago, he told the judge the government's case against him is accurate. he admitted to jumping over the white house fence back in october. the breach was one of several in recent months and now changes are coming to the white house. it was last october, this cell phone video captured the scuffle that ensued on the front lawn of the white house after dominick arisagna scaled the fence. he punches secret service dogs before being brought down. he appeared in federal court this morning and pled guilty to a one count misdemeanor of entering a restricted space. he could face a maximum of one year in jail and a $100,000 fine. his arrest was just one in a series of recent fence-jumping incidents that focused attention on white house security and the fence itself. now changes are on the way. approval has been given to bolt steel spikes on top of the existing fence to make it harder to climb. other changes being considered include remacing the fence with a taller one that's ten feet high and building a second fence inside the perimeter creating a double barrier. it looks like sentencing could happen in early july. he could face a maximum of one year in jail as well as $100,000 fine. his attorney though, is asking for time served. in northwest, megan mcgrath news 4. >> thank you, megan. we want to get you caught up on our top stories. starting with an incident that had a local high school on alert all morning long. montgomery county police say a silver spring gas station worker was injured during an apparent robbery attempt this morning. it happened at the corner of university boulevard and colesville road very close to montgomery blair high school. students and staff were asked to shelter in place. police looking for this person who stole a boy's wheelchair. it happened at an apartment complex in langley park. police say surveillance video shows a person pushing the empty chairperson in the parking lot of the complex. a cash reward is being offered. >> and the caps hope they can wrap things up tonight, doing a little bit better facing off at 7:00 p.m. for game two of their playoff series. the caps are hoping to play a more up tempo game tonight. there is a lot of talk about heavy and sluggish legs from game up with. they're playing the islanders at 7:00 p.m. >> tom, get us caught up on the forecast. sunny, around 70 degrees. potential weather slowdowns, well, this afternoon with showers and maybe even thundershowers coming through this may be slowdowns. then this evening all green lights and tomorrow as well. no travel problems weather wise as a beautiful pattern will be setting on in. now, our early temperatures through the afternoon should be in the mid-70s by 2:00 upper 70s by 4:00 p.m. back down to the mid-70s by 6:00 p.m. we may get passing showers and maybe a rumble of thunder. not severe. then after that we'll clear out a bit tonight, back down to the upper 60s by late this evening. >> thanks tom. just a little while ago one of the possible gop presidential candidates addressed republican brass in new hampshire. former florida governor jeb bush was the featured speaker at the politics and eggs breakfast. right out of the gate bush acknowledged his brother and father but tried to make it clear he was different. >> it's kind of interesting, i'm looking out at this room and i'm seeing these incredible pictures some of which bring back really fond memories. guy over there, guy over there. [ laughter ] so i know for a fact if i go beyond the consideration that i'm going to have to show my heart, show who i am tell my story. it's a little different than the story of my brother and my dad. >> they do laugh alike, though. bush said he's considering a run for the white house but still has not made it official. right now the national republican leadership summit is under way. these are live pictures from that event in new hampshire. there's a jam-packed schedule of republicans who will take the stage. jeb bush will also speak at that event. other names include chris christie marco rubio and rick perry just to name a few. on the democratic side of thing, former maryland governor martin o'malley has taken a few jabs at hillary clinton. o'malley accused her of flip-flopping on gay marriage during an event last night. clinton has adopted a more populist tone on the issue saying she wants the supreme court to rule in favor of gay marriage at a federal level. hast last year clinton said the issues should be decided on a state-by-state basis. o'malley has long fought for same-sex marriage rights. he accused her of changing her opinion based on polls. tv host dr. oz trending on facebook, a group of doctors trying to get dr. oz fired from columbia university. look at. this ten doctors wrote a letter to the health sciences dean saying the tv doctor misleads and endangers the public. the doctors went on to say oz promotes quack treatments. columbia has not removed oz from the staff there. here's brittany johnson with a look at this weekend's earth day concert. brittany? >> reporter: adam, the street is taped off on both ends. investigators all over the place as they look into what they describe as a suspicious death here in the aurora highlands section of arlington. joining me now is dustin sternbeck with the arlington county police. tell us what you can so far. >> approximately 7:50 this morning police were called to the 1100 block of 18th street south in aurora highlands where they discovered a 42-year-old single mother of two deceased in her residence. >> her children were out in the street were they not? >> a passer-by located two churn in the pajamas in front of the house in the intersection of the roadway, stopped to see if they needed assistance at which time they alerted the police. >> reporter: what about the father of those children. where is he? >> police have made contact on scene here. that individual has not been taken into custody or detained. he is cooperating with the police investigation at this time. >> reporter: so right now what can you tell me? >> it's an ongoing police investigation. the children have been transported to child protective services by arlington county police department to be in a safe comfortable environment. we're going to be here for the foreseeable future. we have a tragic death here of a single mother. >> okay thank you very much. dustin sternbeck with the arlington county police as he said investigators are going to be here most of the day and so will we. we'll be back with more details coming up. news 4 at 5:00 and 6:00. now back to you. i'm melissa mollet at the live desk. this just in. a car bomb has exploded outside the u.s. consulate in northern iraq. there's no immediate word on yours. an associated press reporter on the scene said the large blast caught nearby cars on fire. at this point, no one has claimed responsibility. >> thanks melissa. for the first time, we're hearing from the oklahoma sheriff's reserve officer who accidentally shot a suspect. gabe gutierrez has more on the "today" show's exclusive interview. >> reporter: tulsa reserve sheriff's deputy robert bates spoke publicly for the first time this morning on the "today" show saying that he wanted to apologize to eric harris' family but that mistaking a taser for a gun can "happen to anyone." bates also called the allegation that he paid to play a cop unfair and flatly denied that any of his training records had been falsified. on april 2, bates had been backup as sheriff's deputies chased a suspect during a sting operation. he claim he is meant to pull his taser but instead he fired his gun by mistake, he says killing eric harris. >> oh my god, what has happened? the laser light is the same on each weapon. i saw the light and i squeezed the trigger and then realized i'd dropped the gun. this was not an intentional thing. i have no desire to ever take anyone's life. >> reporter: bates has been charged with second degree manslaughter and is free on bail. he's expected to be arraigned next week. his attorneys say he intends to plead not guilty. gabe gutierrez, nbc news tulsa, oklahoma. it's feeling like spring around here but we're still talking snow. not for us thank goodness. an april storm dropped almost 10 inches of snow in wisconsin causing a 70-car pileup on i-80 out there. and in colorado snowy and rainy conditions are expected to continue off and on through saturday. by the end of the weekend, denver could see more than two feet of snow. tom, we're not going to talk about snow anymore before next fall i hope around here? a home in the 1,100 block of 18th street early this morning. it was a neighbor who alerted police. right now police are saying her death is suspicious. we expect more information later this morning and we'll have more on this tonight on news 4 at 4:00 5:00 and 6:00. a manhunt is under way in montgomery county for the suspect in a violent gas station robbery. chopper 4 captured the aftermath on tape and news 4's molette green joins us live with the latest from the scene. >> reporter: barbara good morning. yes, crime scene tape all gone now. this gas station is back open for business. no sign as you said of the suspect. now, police were able to watch the surveillance video inside the gas station which captures the robbery go down but the suspect had his face covered. all of this happening during a shift change this morning just after 6:30 here at colesville road and university boulevard. it became dramatic scene with the victim stuffing a head injury after getting hit on the head with the gun. the suspect's gun. and the victim then made his way across the street where he was eventually able to get some medical attention. now, montgomery county police tell us how all of this started. >> male clerk stated to officers that during a transition when he was getting off and another clerk was showing up for work male suspect announced a robbery, he had a black what appeared to be a semiautomatic handgun. >> reporter: the suspect then took off on foot and headed in the direction of montgomeryh gomgomery blair high school. chopper 4 was over the scene when police were working with the school to get arriving children inside as quickly as possible. for most of the morning there was restricted access to the school as police searched inside and around that area for any sign of an armed man. the school is back open for normal operations this morning. now, the suspect is still out here. misonly are working with a very limited description. they tell us they are still talking with the victim this morning to try to get more information. live this morning in silver spring i'm molette green, back to you. i'm melissa mollet at the live desk. we're waiting to see if a former fairfax county police spokesman will post bond to get out of jail. william bud walker is being held for possessing child pornography. during a hearing this morning, his bond was set at $15,000, though his attorney argued it was too high and should be lower. if he is released walker will be barred from using computers and would not be able to have unsupervised contact with children. his wife was in court to show support. good news for a boy who had his wheelchair stolen. through social media and a radio station, someone offered to donate one to the family. the boy's mother says she leaves the wheelchair in the lobby every night so she can carry her son up to the second floor apartment. when she went to get the cheremond morning it was gone. anyone with information is asked to call police. tom? just a short time ago, he told the judge the government's case against him is accurate. he admitted to jumping over the white house fence back in october. the breach was one of several in recent months and now changes are coming to the white house. it was last october, this cell phone video captured the scuffle that ensued on the front lawn of the white house after dominick arisagna scaled the fence. he punches secret service dogs before being brought down. he appeared in federal court this morning and pled guilty to a one count misdemeanor of entering a restricted space. he could face a maximum of one year in jail and a $100,000 fine. his arrest was just one in a series of recent fence-jumping incidents that focused attention on white house security and the fence itself. now changes are on the way. approval has been given to bolt steel spikes on top of the existing fence to make it harder to climb. other changes being considered include remacing the fence with a taller one that's ten feet high and building a second fence inside the perimeter creating a double barrier. it looks like sentencing could happen in early july. he could face a maximum of one year in jail as well as $100,000 fine. his attorney though, is asking for time served. in northwest, megan mcgrath news 4. >> thank you, megan. we want to get you caught up on our top stories. starting with an incident that had a local high school on alert all morning long. montgomery county police say a silver spring gas station worker was injured during an apparent robbery attempt this morning. it happened at the corner of university boulevard and colesville road very close to montgomery blair high school. students and staff were asked to shelter in place. police looking for this person who stole a boy's wheelchair. it happened at an apartment complex in langley park. police say surveillance video shows a person pushing the empty chairperson in the parking lot of the complex. a cash reward is being offered. >> and the caps hope they can wrap things up tonight, doing a little bit better facing off at 7:00 p.m. for game two of their playoff series. the caps are hoping to play a more up tempo game tonight. there is a lot of talk about heavy and sluggish legs from game up with. they're playing the islanders at 7:00 p.m. >> tom, get us caught up on the forecast. sunny, around 70 degrees. potential weather slowdowns, well, this afternoon with showers and maybe even thundershowers coming through this may be slowdowns. then this evening all green lights and tomorrow as well. no travel problems weather wise as a beautiful pattern will be setting on in. now, our early temperatures through the afternoon should be in the mid-70s by 2:00 upper 70s by 4:00 p.m. back down to the mid-70s by 6:00 p.m. we may get passing showers and maybe a rumble of thunder. not severe. then after that we'll clear out a bit tonight, back down to the upper 60s by late this evening. >> thanks tom. just a little while ago one of the possible gop presidential candidates addressed republican brass in new hampshire. former florida governor jeb bush was the featured speaker at the politics and eggs breakfast. right out of the gate bush acknowledged his brother and father but tried to make it clear he was different. >> it's kind of interesting, i'm looking out at this room and i'm seeing these incredible pictures some of which bring back really fond memories. guy over there, guy over there. [ laughter ] so i know for a fact if i go beyond the consideration that i'm going to have to show my heart, show who i am tell my story. it's a little different than the story of my brother and my dad. >> they do laugh alike, though. bush said he's considering a run for the white house but still has not made it official. right now the national republican leadership summit is under way. these are live pictures from that event in new hampshire. there's a jam-packed schedule of republicans who will take the stage. jeb bush will also speak at that event. other names include chris christie marco rubio and rick perry just to name a few. on the democratic side of thing, former maryland governor martin o'malley has taken a few jabs at hillary clinton. o'malley accused her of flip-flopping on gay marriage during an event last night. clinton has adopted a more populist tone on the issue saying she wants the supreme court to rule in favor of gay marriage at a federal level. hast last year clinton said the issues should be decided on a state-by-state basis. o'malley has long fought for same-sex marriage rights. he accused her of changing her opinion based on polls. tv host dr. oz trending on facebook, a group of doctors trying to get dr. oz fired from columbia university. look at. this ten doctors wrote a letter to the health sciences dean saying the tv doctor misleads and endangers the public. the doctors went on to say oz promotes quack treatments. columbia has not removed oz from the staff there. here's brittany johnson with a look at this weekend's earth day concert. brittany? >> reporter: adam, the street is taped off on both ends. investigators all over the place as they look into what they describe as a suspicious death here in the aurora highlands section of arlington. joining me now is dustin sternbeck with the arlington county police. tell us what you can so far. >> approximately 7:50 this morning police were called to the 1100 block of 18th street south in aurora highlands where they discovered a 42-year-old single mother of two deceased in her residence. >> her children were out in the street were they not? >> a passer-by located two churn in the pajamas in front of the house in the intersection of the roadway, stopped to see if they needed assistance at which time they alerted the police. >> reporter: what about the father of those children. where is he? >> police have made contact on scene here. that individual has not been taken into custody or detained. he is cooperating with the police investigation at this time. >> reporter: so right now what can you tell me? >> it's an ongoing police investigation. the children have been transported to child protective services by arlington county police department to be in a safe comfortable environment. we're going to be here for the foreseeable future. we have a tragic death here of a single mother. >> okay thank you very much. dustin sternbeck with the arlington county police as he said investigators are going to be here most of the day and so will we. we'll be back with more details coming up. news 4 at 5:00 and 6:00. now back to you. i'm melissa mollet at the live desk. this just in. a car bomb has exploded outside the u.s. consulate in northern iraq. there's no immediate word on yours. an associated press reporter on the scene said the large blast caught nearby cars on fire. at this point, no one has claimed responsibility. >> thanks melissa. for the first time, we're hearing from the oklahoma sheriff's reserve officer who accidentally shot a suspect. gabe gutierrez has more on the "today" show's exclusive interview. >> reporter: tulsa reserve sheriff's deputy robert bates spoke publicly for the first time this morning on the "today" show saying that he wanted to apologize to eric harris' family but that mistaking a taser for a gun can "happen to anyone." bates also called the allegation that he paid to play a cop unfair and flatly denied that any of his training records had been falsified. on april 2, bates had been backup as sheriff's deputies chased a suspect during a sting operation. he claim he is meant to pull his taser but instead he fired his gun by mistake, he says killing eric harris. >> oh my god, what has happened? the laser light is the same on each weapon. i saw the light and i squeezed the trigger and then realized i'd dropped the gun. this was not an intentional thing. i have no desire to ever take anyone's life. >> reporter: bates has been charged with second degree manslaughter and is free on bail. he's expected to be arraigned next week. his attorneys say he intends to plead not guilty. gabe gutierrez, nbc news tulsa, oklahoma. it's feeling like spring around here but we're still talking snow. not for us thank goodness. an april storm dropped almost 10 inches of snow in wisconsin causing a 70-car pileup on i-80 out there. and in colorado snowy and rainy conditions are expected to continue off and on through saturday. by the end of the weekend, denver could see more than two feet of snow. tom, we're not going to talk about snow anymore before next fall i hope around here?
