the latest. virginia's former first lady marie mcdonnell reportedly asked an nfl player for money. she also reportedly asked him not to tell her husband. the football player was maureen's sister-in-law's old boyfriend and the claims were written in the letter to the u.s. district judge in part of a request to show leniency to the former governor. he will be sentenced next week. you could be part of a new process if you live in arlington. it comes after frustrations from the local residents. it will ask for community input where schools and other infrastructure should be built. 20 residents will be elected to study and advise officials and they will be asked how to retain parks and open space. it's an attempt to restore what's called the arlington way of seeking consensus. senator harry reid is recovering this morning after being hurt while exercising. his office says the 75-year-old broke several ribs and bones in his face after falling at his home in nevada. a resistance band he was using broke and that caused him to fall. reid spent new year's day in the hospital and he's expected to be back here in d.c. on tuesday for the beginning of the new congress. this morning, washington is remembering a giant in new york politics. former governor mario cuomo passed away yesterday. nbc's tracie potts has more on his legacy from capitol hill. >> reporter: hi, richard. mario cuomo of new york died just hours after andrew was inaugurate rated. he is being remembered as a giant not only in new york government and politics but also nationally. it was his speech in 1984 that got a lot of people thinking he should run for president. he did not, but still had a huge influence. and this morning, condolences are pouring in from democrats like the clintons who called him a friend and in a statement we got earlier this morning, president obama who called governor cuomo governor andrew cuomo and said his father was a champion of progressive values. we are hearing from peter king and chris christie who called him a role model. people may not realize, he was a minor league baseball player before going into politics. cuomo was 82 years old. richard? >> all right. thanks to tracie potts on the hill. for more on cuomo's legacy we are joined by mark murray, nbc political editor. good morning. >> good morning to you. >> so he was really respected from both sides of the aisle, mario cuomo. why is that? >> i think one of his big legacies he was a progressive in a much more political conservative era. you know when he ended up giving that convention speech in 1984 that was an election that ronald reagan was going to win in a blowout fashion over walter mondale. and later the next democratic candidate who ended up winning the presidency bill clinton not mario cuomo because cuomo decided not to run, he governmentgoverned more in a centrist in a lot of ways. so in a lot of ways he ended up having mario cuomo become this beacon to progressism. it hasn't come out until the obama era, so that's the best way to understand mario cuomo and his political legacy. >> he never ran for president, even though in the late '80s, he was popular. why didn't he run? >> part of it is sometimes he and -- he's been quoted extensively saying you have to do all the things to run for president. you have to raise money. pretty much devote ten years of your life to run for it and then run for it and then run for re-election re-election. you don't have to run for the presidency to shape american politics. he's a big, big figure, somebody who never even got on that presidential stage. >> of course new york is such a big state in the country anyways so he was able to make a difference. >> that's right. when you're mayor or governor of new york you're a lot better known than other folks in the country. >> exactly. so we have been talking about all morning the new council members become sworn in in the district. what do you see that the future holds for this council and the republicans in control of congress? >> one little reminder, any time the republicans congress -- control congress unilaterally it's usually not good news for d.c. those who want to control and have their open laws in place and congress can be a thorn in their side. that was a reflection of the day that republicans won control of the united states senate that history was kind of written there. but definitely a new era for d.c. and certainly a new mayor. >> mark thanks a lot. have a good weekend. >> you too. >> far more from mark and theest rest of the political team, check out "first read." it's not happy new year for general motors as they make another vehicle recall. this one affects about 92,000 suvs and trucks. an issue can make the ignition
