we're going to prevail on this on the merits of the case because it is done so in a very lawful way. >> reporter: a rules is expected soon after tonight's argument to resume the ban or keep it on hold. depending on which way the judges seem to be moving here, the government's given them a bit of an out, a caveat that if they want to narrow this ban, it could only apply to people who are trying to get into the u.s. for the first time. i'm looking at an update from the court as these arguments get underway. they're saying a decision is expected sometime this week. despite the legal wrangling over the president's immigration order, those who support the new administration have their own personal take. our chris gordon went to calvert trump supporters and asked them to weigh in on everything from the travel ban to media coverage. >> reporter: at the calvert county republican headquarters, the sign congratulates the trump/pence administration. people here have seen the protests against president trump's travel restrictions and know it's being challenged in federal court. but many here say they support what president trump is trying to do it. >> i think we need to have a little bit more restrictions as far as checking out people's backgrounds and that type of thing. i don't see that that would hurt anything. >> reporter: president trump has made it clear he thinks the media is unfair. what do you think of the media? >> you don't want me to say that on camera. >> reporter: i think we were just edited by a passing truck. she tells me it sometimes seems to her that the news is biassed. >> when they talk about trump ti keep tweeting because we hear it coming from your mouth and it cannot be twisted that way. >> reporter: linda is not your average trump supporter. who else has a flag flying out front, a banner on the roof and the name trump 2016 spelled out in solar panels. other motorists in this area share a sentiment that trump should be given a chance to today democrats pressed homeland security secretary john kelly for more details on how the seven countries were chosen for the president's immigration order. nbc news justin correspondent pete williams explains. >> they're concentrating on the countries where they think it's visas to come to the u.s. and especially refugees. in some countries he says they're virtually failed states and it's not possible to get good background information. it's a lot like going to the department of motorcyc vehicles here in the u.s. to know they are who they say they are. >> secretary congress also said s is there. there are thousands without power. schools were locked down to protect students. several injuries have been reported but far no reports of any deaths. the governor of louisiana declared a state of emergency, says he is working hard to make sure people get the resources they need. all that part of the same system that's bringing us record heat. but it won't last long. doug is tracking tornado warning currently in southern portions of georgia which was hit just a couple of months this is what was going on in new orleans about noon today. look at that hook echo coming right around the new orleans area, hit new orleans east. again, it's all part of the same system moving to the east, bringing us these incredibly warm temperatures. highs today in the 70s all across the region. we for more than three weeks. today detectives went door to door in the teenager's apartment complex hoping to find some new clues. kristin wright joins us from springfield with details. >> reporter: imagine what it's like for lizzie's mother, the baby's grandmother to lay her head down at night to go to sleep. today i talked to the national center for missing and exploited children. what they tell me is that they intend to find lizzie and her baby and reunite them with their family. the national center for missing and exploited children says any time there's a missing child, time is the enemy. when there's also a missing baby, the situation is even more dire. in the situation for 16-year-old lizzie and her son aidan, the center says as time goes on the higher the risks to mother and child. they've been missing more than three weeks. >> how long ago was this? >> january 14th. >> oh my god. >> reporter: today fairfax poster to the people at the springfield square apartments in springfield. >> we're investigating a miss g i mov juvenile. >> reporter: they believe lizzie left the rivas out of fear. police are looking for rivas tonight. >> we're going around the neighborhood asking for the public's assistance for any information. >> we don't know what kind of care the baby's getting, food, clothing, we don't know how they're getting all this stuff for the baby. >> reporter: the national center for missing and exploited children they they never assume the worst and they never give up on children. the thing is someone knows something. anonymous tips can be made through crime solvers. now to a police-involved shooting in the district. investigators say robbed a woman at gunpoint and refused to drop his weapon as they moved in to arrest him. the suspect was shot. he's listed in serious condition now at a hospital. this all happened off good hope road near 13th street in southeast. we're told the police officers were wearing body cameras and video will be reviewed as part of the investigation. now to the search for a suspect after an argument turned deadly just steps away from a metro station near the addison road metro stop. mark segraves joins us live from seat pleasant with the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: prince george's county police homicide detectives and evidence technicians were here for hours scouring this parking lot. they focused on video surveillance tape from this dunkin donuts and convenience mart next door. this all started when an argument broke out in this parking lot earli afternoon. it was about 12:00 this afternoon. seat pleasuant police got the call for two men fighting in the parking lot of this exxon station. seat pleasant's chief of police says that argue m turned deadly. >> we don't know the details, if he was stabbed, cut or any type of blunt object used. >> reporter: the suspect fled the scene. a police dog was brought in to help search the area. police are reviewing surveillance video from a gas station as well as a nearby convenience store. now, you have to go back to last fall for there to be a homicide in seat pleasant, maryland. because this is a homicide, it's now being investigated by prince george's county police. we can tell you that several people have come by here this afternoon telling us they're very concerned about this person who was killed. they know him as someone who hangs out in this community. late this evening police are telling us there may be as many as two or three suspected they're still reviewing the surveillance tape. coming up a pilot shares right now with more on this. >> reporter: that driver is 35-year-old david phillip jones, now charged with second degree murder. we were told that he was drunk when he hit this woman crossing the cross walk just behind us. >> she just had a sweet soul. carolyn didn't have any children but she had many children, many godchildren. >> reporter: leslie payne says carolyn ellis was more than her best friend. she was like a sister who went out of her way to help others. >> other people's children that she helped raise and support, helped put them through college, helped get them scholarships. >> reporter: leslie says she helped because she wanted the kids to have a better life. but on monday night carolyn's was cut short. she was attending a celebration where she was honored for her community service inside the masonic temple at u street. >> i heard the screaming. >> reporter: helen is a security guard in the building. she heard the screams and ran out. >> i came out, she was out in the middle of the >> reporter: surveillance video from u scoot rentals shows a black car turning down u street around the same time carolyn and a friend were crossing at the 10th street intersection. we stopped the video just before the driver hits carolyn and takes off. gillespie says she rushed over to help. >> her eyes were already closed but she was still breathing. the ambulance came. >> reporter: when police arrived, they were able to track down the driver, 36-year-old david phillip jones, who left the scene. police say he was so intoxicated that he wasn't able to complete a field sobriety test. but this isn't jones's first dui. according to court record, he was arrested twice in the last five years. but this time it cost carolyn ellis her life. jones has a lengthy criminal history that dates back nearly 20 years. he's been arrested on drug charges, two duis from 2011 and 2012. he was in court today for his first court appearance. now some news about our lifestyles. if you feel like you're spending more time in your car these days, you're not the only one. prince george's county residents spend the most time in their vehicles. montgomery county drivers are next with just over 34 minutes. the average fairfax county commute clocked in at 32 minutes. arlington county drivers are at 28 minutes. >> reporter: take away parking at metro and put up new buildings. it's a polarizing topic. >> i think we probably need the parking. >> reporter: instead of a development? >> we have a lot of development around here. >> reporter: others say they want the development and will willing to pay and live near the train. >> i enjoy the freedom to take mass transit. works for me. >> reporter: when you think about metro, you might not think about real estate, but the transit agency has a lot of real estate like here at the groefs nor station. metro is looking at making land deals. casey anderson says even with all the construction in our area right up demand to be closer to transit. >> almost all of the new office space getting built and leased not just in the county but in the d.c. region is either right on top of or very close to metro. >> reporter: these plans are in the early stages but if they do happen, you may get a benefit even if you don't live here. retail shops and food and beverage shops would be tested as part of a new concept for development around metro. planners will be keeping a close eye on how any new development could affect traffic on nearby roads. just a few minutes left to vote in the special election for mayor of fairfax city. the race is between three current city council members. a win by one of them would set up a special election to fill the vacant council seat. new push back from the white house that kind of storm. i really want to make sure that everybody knows that. this snowstorm not going to be a big one for us. what we are watching, though, is this big storm, a front making its way down all the way to the south. you saw the severe weather around new orleans today, even into south georgia earlier today. we continue to watch that severe weather push across. for us, it's just bringing us that mild air. tomorrow we will see some sunshine, some clouds cover too. then the temperatures start to fall. then question start to see our next system move in. rain developing. by 5:00 a.m. it's snowing just about everywhere. it could pretty good clip here across the area. during the morning rush, still snowing around parts of the region before finally trying to get out of here around 11:00. up to an inch down to the south and east. 1-3 montgomery county, frederick county, loudoun county. this is wet messy snow, mainly on grassy surfaces. this is something we'll continue to watch for the and what he did next. also, they served in the military but they're facing an uncertain future. why some folks are now in jeopardy of being deported. >> reporter: they were facing eviction at the end of this month but tonight residents in this manassas mobile home park from new hope. a story of survival. a pilot talks about the moment his plane fell from the sky. >> it's one of those things that you train for your whole time. a metro rider and a transit police officer hailed for their life saving actions. >> i'm not a hero. i was just there at the right time. new hope for virginia residents being forced out of their homes. we're looking for answers about a mysterious tweet about the found of tesla. why he's interested in tunnels running under d.c. >> the crash happened yesterday in fort washington. our bureau chief tracee wilkins is reporting now near the airport with that story and his recovery. >> reporter: well, he was bandaged and he was bruised as he left prince george's county hospital today. but he was alive and he told us his story. >> over time more of the memories come back. >> reporter: he doesn't remember everything but he knows what he was thinking when the plane went down. >> there's not much time to think. it happens very fast. so really you're just focusing on a couple of important points, like where am i going to land, how am i going to get there. >> reporter: it's a miracle that he walked away from that crash and today is walking out of the hospital. >> after i took off, i hadn't climbed out very far and the engine just stopped. >> reporter: jerry's piper air single engine plane went down just moments after from potomac airfield in fort washington. he's been flying for nearly ten years. >> they teach you how to deal with engine failures. and with all the training, it just kicks in when the situation confronts you. >> reporter: after the crash, jerry believes he blacked out. when he came to, his first call was home to his wife in rhode island. >> mostly i wanted to comfort le her. it's easier for the person who was injured than the person who wasn't there. >> reporter: his next call was to 911. he thinks his problem may have been engine failure but can't say for sure until the investigation into the cause is complete. jerry has a fractured sternum and lacerations to his head but he's already thinking about his next flight. >> i love it. it's just such a feeling of freedom. it's incredible to be up in the sky. once you've done it, you can't go back. it's part of you. >> reporter: he's also thinking about buying a new plane. he says that he had that one for two years and hates to see that it got crashed up. this is a guy that has a lot of motivation, says he's looking at this recovery period as an opportunity to spend more time with his dpragrandchild. we are listening to an appeals court hearing that could have huge implications for so many people here in our area. the judges are hearing arguments for and against president trump's immigration order. right now the fwogovernment is starting to wrap up their portion of this hearing. they have been getting some very tough ke questions from these appeals court judges. the judges raising a lot of questions about that. this hearing ise via teleconference. the lawyers and judges are all in different cities. they are considering whether or not to over turn a lower court's ruling and reinstate the president's temporary travel ban on people from those seven nations. this hearing is not meant to decide the constitutionality of the president's executive order. each side gets about 30 minutes. again, the other side is about to start making their argument right now. there's no telling how quickly these justices will issue their ruling. but it could mean either this ban comes back into force or they let the lower court's ruling stand, which means people are free to come back and forth under normal immigration rules. the white house tonight is pushing back against an nbc news report on a deadly raid in yemen in which a navy seal was killed. nbc news reported last night that the intended goal of raid was not acquiring intelligence as white house officials initially stated. u.s. military and intelligence sources told nbc news that the main objective of that mission was to kill or capture the leader of al qaeda in yemen. he is alive now and a number of military officials confirmed to nbc that he has released an audio recording on monday taunting president trump, calling him a fool. today white house officials reiterated their initial statement. >> the raid that was conducted in yemen was an intelligence gathering raid. that's what it was. it was highly successful, it achieved the purpose, it saved the loss of life that we suffer and the injuries that occurred. >> the navy seal william ryan owens was killed during that raid. several others were in neil gorsuch is back on capitol hill today. one of his first stops, the office of chuck schumer. if his nomination is approved, all 100 members of the senate will vote on whether to confirm him. democrats are demanding the nomination reach a threshold of 60 votes rather than the simple majority of 151 required for cabinet nominations. a ride to work nearly ended in tragedy on metro a week ago. a 46-year-old man collapsed on a metro platform last tuesday morning. david culver explains now how him alive. >> reporter: if you stumbled upon this gathered outside the braddock road metro station, you might think it was a reunion of de dear friends. hugs that lingered. no one seemed ready to break off the embrace. let's go back a week. most here didn't even know each other. one man's morning commute changed that. on his way to work at the pentagon, chris, a husband and father of two had gone up the station escalator waiting for his train. his sister-in-law explains what happened next. >> with no warning, he collapsed and doesn't remember a thing. >> so i looked out the window and i saw the gentleman lying face down on the platform. >> reporter: debra anderson happened to be on an incoming train. she too headed to the pentagon. this wasn't her usual commute. in fact she says she doesn't often ride metro. >> on that day i was running late >> reporter: before the doors closed, debra acted. she joined metro transit police officer joanne dill and other riders. together they used their cpr training. >> you don't really think about it. you just start doing what you're trained to do. >> reporter: within a few minutes these first responders on scene took over. >> there are no words adequate enough to express our gratitude. how do you thank angels? >> reporter: some may call the perfect timing a lucky coincidence. >> it was god, of course. >> reporter: as an extension from property owners as two nonprofits step in to help. >> come up with a plan. >> residents begging for more time after the property owner failed for eight years to fix leaking sewer pipes, residents got eviction notes ordering them out by february 28th. but they've just won more time thanks to a lawyer working on their behalf and two nonprofits. this let frter promised they'll have until march 24th to work on solutions. >> i feel hopeful. >> one of the nonprofits hydro relief and water conservationprn relief will sponsor the construction of a new sewer system. >> the challenge, raising $1.7 million in just a few weeks. today this noettice went to eas end residents asking them to help. >> we have everything together to initiate the plan except the funding. >> while
