In fact, she said she heard some noise in the background. She asked if he was all right. He said, dont worry, ill be home soon. You see, block and a half away. But seth rich, he never made it home. He was jumped, pushed to the ground and shot twice in the back. Today, i talked to his mom by phone. They took his life for no reason. They didnt finish robbing him. They just took his life and they hurt the community and they hurt they hurt the longterm possibility of what he could have done. Reporter kenneth wells sits behind the wheel of engine 30 and says responding to more than 7600 emergency calls a year can take a toll on a person. You get used to turning off emotions sometimes. You see so much of it, it can kind of get overwhelming. Reporter chief dean is working oh working on a plan to reduce the number of calls that they respond to. Were trying to change that so people call us for medical emergencies, not for medical problems. Reporter people use 911 when they need to get to a doctor but its not an emergency. So he is considering having a nurse on duty to screen 911 calls. They can talk to the patients and determine if they need to be seen immediately or can we get them into a walkin clinic instead of going to the e. R. Room. Were trying to free up the e. R. Room. If the nurse determines that the 911 caller doesnt need to go to the emergency room, the plan would be to call a car service to transport that person to a clinic or a doctors office. We are working with the Health Department to find other ways to transport people, such as using a contract taxi cab or uber or whatever you do. This new plan for the mayor and council to consider by this fall. If all goes well, car services could be transporting some 911 patients by early next year.
