The county executive is saying when folks move to prince georges count fist question is where will my child go to school, is it one of the good schools or do i have to put them in private scho does not want that to be the case anymore. By 2020 he wants prince georges coun to have one of the top ten schools in maryland. The county executive believes hes at war to stave county and the fight centers around the school system. S and prince pals come here for seven years, we train them they do a great job, and they get a signing bonus to go elsewhere. Those days are over. Reporter he introduced a bold 3. 6 billion budget with a focus on more money for schools and Public Safety but also layoffs, furlough and tax increases. Even in these tough economic times, were investing. Rep the prince georges cod req 1. 9 billion in funding and baker proposes completely funding them by giving 135. 7 million more than they got last year. There were year where is we were reduced by hundreds of millions of dollars, and so, you know, when tt happens several successive years it takes a while to build that back up. Reporter the money to pay for that increase will come from increasing property taxes. The 15cent increase per 100 is expected to yield 104. 9 million for schools. So if you have a 200,000 home you will pay 300 more in taxes per year. There are also staff impacts with five furlough days proposed and 110 layoffs for county employees. Biggest obstacle for our county is the school system. Reporter the county council will have the final say over the county executives budget and r is promising a thorough review. We understand the reason for the county executives proposal but we have to again, exercise our role as the fiscal stewards to make sure that its the right plan. Reporter the final vote is expected to come from the counl in june. Theres also a 6 0tax credit for folks who make 60,000 or less in the county to help out with property taxes. Metro officials arent saying much but our Law Enforcement sources are telling us that this metro transit Police Officer acted in selfdefense when she shot and killed that man as the man was coming toward her with a large stick. The man had been in the tunnel at least 20 minutes before Metro Transit Police shot and killed him. Sources say he was not wearing a shirt. According to a time line provided by metro, at 8 50 last night act train operator reported an unauthn in the tunnel. At 8 57 the first metro officer arrived on the scene. At 9 01 three more officers arrived and began searching the tunnel. At 9 10 one of those officers encountered the suspect about 400 feet from the platform. Law enforcement sources tell news4 the man had a large stick in his hands as he approached the female officer. The officer fired multiple shots at close range, killing the man. Now, despite repeated requests metro officials refusing to answer any questions tonight about this fatal shooting. They have not released the name of the Police Officer or of the victim who was killed. We can tell you that the Police Officer, a female has been with Metro Transit Police for more than ten years. And he was caught on surveillance camera using them a short time later. That story aired only on news4. A viewer called police to identify him as william powell. Powell has no fixed address. But police say he has ties to maryland. Tonight there is a warrant for his arrest. The first female fire chief in Frederick County is out after just two years on the job. And theres stale lot of questions as to why denise puget left her position last night pap union lead told our sister station in hagerstown the departure came down l differences over how to run the department. Other county officials have yet to comment. Puget previously served as assistant fire chief in Montgomery County with more than 25 years working in that department. C a that a man who was arrested for sexually abusing a music student in Montgomery County may have other victims. Police say Jeffrey Oconnor molested a boy over a threeyear period at his house in Silver Spring. Thats where he teaches guitar lessons. Residents say the folks in this house just moved in a few months ago. Early thursday Police Arrived armed with a search warrant. Inside the house they found drugs heroin, oxy yi oxycodone morphine marijuana, and cash. Two of the men living there 36yearold marcus brown and 35yearold raymond messenger are charged with drug distribution. Two others 26yearold kiely mccarry and 51yearold allen gonye have possession charges. The concern of heroin and overdoses are a big concern across the region. Police say they are trying to stop the flow with arrests like this one. Straits the fact this is a problem in communities not just ours but communities all over the united states. And police dmtds not only this e im sure are addressing it in any way, shape, or form that they can to try to curb it and also to prevent, you know, these overdoses from happening.
