director jim claper held talks to get kenneth bae and matthew todd released. bae was sentenced to 15 years hard labor and his health was failing. matthew todd miller was in the country seven months. >> it's a wonderful day, obviously, we are very grateful for their safe return. and i appreciate the director doing a great job what was obviously a tough settlement. >> reporter: this comes after the release of another american the swedish government helped to negotiate his release. he was said to be involved in time as well but there are few questions, like why the director of national intelligence? how long were these so-called discussions and are there any conditions tied to bae's and miller's release? one u.s. official told the associated press that nothing was offered in exchange for the return of these two men. >> all right. coming up on nbc "nightly news," they will get further into what was behind this release. we have the latest at 6:30 right after our broadcast. new at 6:00, a maryland woman is in critical condition. the two alarm fire broke out just before 2:00 this afternoon in hanover. firefighters pulled the woman out. paramedics rushed her to the hospital. investigators are trying to figure out how that started. in carroll county, a pile of splinterred wood is all that's left after a storage shed blew up and sent one man to the hospital. this happened along sullivan road in westminster. investigators say the man was opening the shed door when it exploded. he was seriously burned. the blast tore the siding off his neighbor's home. it was so strong, some people thought a bomb had gone off and it shattered windows of a dozen other homes in the neighborhood. firefighters are cleaning up the damage as investigators try to figure out what exploded and how. >> outside, we suffering, with suffering, we have two choices, to believe in it. >> today was a day for inside the high school community. hundreds came to pay their respects to domenic petty, sr., killed in a car wreck last week. >> reporter: the church was packed to the gil, standing room only. domenic petty was only 17-years-old but his impact was undeniabl undeniable. they wore gonzaga high school and long faces, they fakd basilica to say final good-bye. they knew him as dom, a 17-year-old senior, he was a class act at gonzaga high school in d.c. classmates say he was a national leader, it was how he carried himself, in the classroom and on the ice as a standout hockey player. he was a special guy. >> domenik petty. >> reporter: he was riding on the beltway and ran out of gas win a woman who may have been drinking plowed into the back of the vehicle. dom was in the back seat. the news shook the gonzaga community. one classmate told me it really puts into perspective, how fragile life can be. he made the people around him feel special. that's what made him unique. dom was deeply loved and will truly be missed. reporting at the basilica. developing right now, police are trying to identify a driver killed in a massive crash on i-95 in virginia. the crash happened just before 11:00 last night near russell road in quantico. state police say a dump truck broke down in the middle of i-95, in a couple minutes, a tractor-trailer slammed into it. both vehicles flipped over, which shut down the highway for six hours. the crash killed the tractor-trailer driver while the dump truck driver is expected to be okay. things are back to normal at this district after a car flipped over. it happened around 5:00 this morning in the palisades neighborhood. police had to shut down macarthur boulevard in both directions. the person inside that car was hurt. police don't think other vehicles were involved. in virginia, there is now a fund in place to help the victims of a deadly house fire. in fact, they have raidsed $45,000 for a family in arlington. the pots died trying to save their 7-year-old daughter. she and emily were killed tuesday morning t. husband and older daughter sarah made it out. they said sarah had come out of the intensive care unit. she is still in the hospital recovering. they say there was no working smoke detectors in the family's home. the woman picked to be the next attorney general had taken on terrorists, mobsters, even cops. lorretta lynch is known for her hard driving, low key style. lynch is the u.s. attorney for the eastern district of york. her office is going after corrupt politics, both democrats and republicans. she is handling civil rights cases, including the prosecution of the nypd officer who sexually assaulted a person. if confirmed, she will serve as the first black woman to be the attorney general. >> if i have the honor confirmed by the senate, i will wake up every morning officers found her friday responding to a domestic call in welch, west virginia. investigators say she had been living with a 50-year-old man and their one-year-old baby. she told police joseph crawley verbally and physicalally abused her and threatened to kill and her father if she told anyone about it. now he is in jail for a domestic assault. her father is on his way to west virginia to bring her home. out west, a teenager has died after last month's shooting in seattle. he died at the hospital last night. his family says they're grateful for everyone's prayers. he was 15-years-old and sought by his cousin who opened fire on classmates in the school's cafeteria. the teenage shooter killed himself. verdicts haven't determined why he did it. a military transport arrived in the netherlands today with recently discovered remains from a malaysia airlines plane that crashed in the ukraine. it's been nearly four months since the jet went down. a team of experts identified nearly all of the 298 people on board. they are trying to figure out what brought down the plane. it is believed it was shot oust of the sky by a surface-to-air missile. back here at home, treasure, tucked
