Young children have been coming home to the scene of crime tape blocking their neighborhood and detectives investigating the 89th murder in washington, d. C. Were about a block away. Take a look at the video we got earlier of the crime scene. You can see the area littered with crime scene evidence markers, those yellow tents that mark where they have evidence on the scene here. This is again the 89th murder in washington, d. C. Police are telling us an adult male was on the sidewalk about 3 30 when multiple shots rang out. The man was shot multiple times and proned hospital. Police are on the lookout for a gray chevy impala. We talked to a local leader who says this is just one too many murders in his neighborhood once again. Listen to what he had to say. Broad daylight. When is the mayor going to get it . Reporter now, again, police are looking for three adult males who fled the scene in a 2001 chevy impala that had the vent window busted out. This happened near the dpit for little river turnpike in fairfax county. Rearended another causing both to spinout and crash into the express lanes. A woman in one car died, three others had serious injuries. Were told the driver of the striking vehicle got out and ran. Officers tracked him down a short time later. New details tonight, we now know what the districts emergency 911 system, why it went down for 90 minutes early sunday morning. An engineer hit a switch that killed power to the entire building. Tom sherwood joins us now with an update. It was a scary situation, and it was a mystery. Now city Officials Say theyve solved it. The districts modern Emergency Call Center in southeast, it handles tens of thousands of emergency 911 and 311 information calls. The unexplained power shutdown early sunday for 90 minutes was still a mystery monday morning. Now a district emergency official unified Communications Tell news4 they tracked down the problem. An engineer investigating a water leak hit the allstop button just before midnight saturday. We received an alarm for a leak in the building. We had one of our engineers go and check this alarm. We believe at that time during the alarm check that our emergency power off was activated. During that time, it caused our Critical Infrastructure to go down. Chris geldart, head of homeland security, said the engineer acted because he feared water threatened the whole operation. A lot of power coming into there, a lot of sensitive equipment, a lot of danger for firefighters. So the box is there on purpose so the firefighters have one place to go to to shut down all that power. Officials say theyre unaware och any major calls missed sunday morning, but are working to more securely protect that weve made it more clear exactly what fucnctions to what areas. And director holmes says even more will be done. We are looking at more layers to put in place for a situation like this to make sure that that button is only pushed when its needed to be pushed. Once power was restored, it took a while to get the system up and running again. They told me it was like the gas station button where you push the button and all the pumps go off. The engineer pushed that button. Fixed that. Okay. An unusual sight at a middle school in Prince Georges County. A military helicopter made an Emergency Landing this morning near glen park middle school. The military says it had a transmission warning and landed as a precaution. The chopper r the Head Start Program in prince georges started on time and is running smoothly. Thats the message from county officials today. Theyre trying to reassure parents despite recent problems with that program. We talked to some of those parents today. Tracee . K3s Prince Georges County executive baker and school ceo Kevin Maxwell made a point to begin today at one of the countys 35 head start schools. That has been our absolute fundamental number one goal is to make sure the children who were supposed to be here this morning have a program to attend and that they will have a program for the entire year. Reporter on friday, the u. S. Department of health and Human Services selected Community Development institute, an out of state head countys grant. The county relinquished the money after 50 years of the program. It was a move to help ensure that school would start on time for head start parents. Weve got people at every one of our head start sites this morning, and the reports that ive had are thatyg5z everythin running smoothly. Reporter this after three incidents of child abuse and neglect surfaced. In one incident, a child wandered away. In another, kids were forced to hold boxes of books over their head for punishment. Then here in capital lights, a child was forced to mop his own urine in front of his classmates. Some of the incidents were not properly reported. I was a little worried at first. My son, this is his first day here. Reporter parents say the school did not inform them of the Ongoing Investigation surrounding the urine episode. I wasnt notified by the io reporter others say they have faith that everything is government. Im going to trust the school. Thats just me. Reporter a lot of these parents have no option. Tropical depression nine, this is the one weve been watching for so long here. This ones expected to become a pretty Strong Tropical Storm here in the central gulf. And then move in toward the big bend of florida, right across the jacksonville region, and then out to sea as stronger out in the atlantic. This as well will bring rip current threat up along the beaches. Heading to the beach this weekend, that could be a little bit of an issue. Rip currents or higher tides.
