Metros top safety official turned in his resignation one week after the Transit System shut down metro rail for an entire day to conduct emergency safety checks. As if metro didnt have enough problems s to begin wit adam tuss broke this story this afternoon on the nbc washington app. Lou brown has been the acting chief Safety Officer for about six months now. His resignation becomes effective april 22nd. The position of chief Safety Officer has been a precarious one at metro to say the least. In addition to scoreof issues, the previous chief Safety Officer was publicly criticized by the metro board and then he resigned. Now, metro will be conducting interviews for a new chief Safety Officer next week. The resignation of lou brown comes on the same day that all of the metro stations here in arlington, virginia, were closed for about an hour this morning because of a fire. The fire broke out in a tunnel here at the claredon station. Arlington county firefighters were called to the claredon metro station just before 10 00 a. M. They intartered the station and found light smoke. We evacuated the station and had units shut down power to the third rail. Reporter a Metro Emergency Response Team found the fire in the tunnel leading into the claredon station. Metro says it was caused by burning debris on the track bed and was not an electrical cable issue. Metro service was roslon and shuttle buses transported passengers between the five arlington stations that were closed. I tried to get off and they had metro buses coming back and forth and it was taking like 40 minutes. I got back to head back. But its just been ridiculous. Youve given up . Yeah. Reporter just before noon, metro began single tracking orange line trains between boston and foggy bottom. But silver line trains stopped at east falls church. There is nothing on the board that says when the next train is coming. You know, its just people are asking me if theres when the next train and i have no idea either. Too late. Part of my job. Reporter now, this evening Orange Line Service is back to normal here at the claredon station and throughout all of the stations in arlington. The pair had just gotten to the airport when the bombs went off. In brussels authorities took three people into custody. Belgium officials also confirmed that one of the suicide bombers at the airport is the same suspected bombmaker from the paris attacks. Meanwhile, Salah Abdeslam being held in belgium has stopped cooperating with investigators, refusing to say anything about the brussels attacks. Chris, back to you. Today kerry laid a wreath in honor of the victims and met with some of the belgian officials and first responders. A driver and a truck similar to this one came up from behind him. The driver was driving aggressively and then shot at his window shattering the glass. Yeah, this goes back to october of 2014. It was a friday just like gunfire in the 3800 block of hay street northeast. The victim, caught in the crossfire of all of this was 9yearold Jaydan Stancil and out there playing when the shots erupted. Three people in all were shot but jadan was the most serious of them and d. C. Police officers jumped into action as we hear now from police chief cassie lanear. When the officers were on the scene they realized how serious his injury was and potentially fatal. Saving his life they drove him to the hospital saving his life. Reporter it did save his life. He wasnt expected to recover, but he did. Now today they arrested 27yearold kenneth parker. Hes got 14 counts against him in connection with that shooting on hay street. They found parker at d. C. Jail and he was under arrest and already incarcerated for some now, again, hes facing 14 new counts in response to this and police say that they are not finished. She spoke to jaydans mother and she thinks there are more to come this place is still open. One of five cases that police were announcing today. Today wells talked to matt lauer and told him he feels lucky to just be alive. I was conscious. I was conscious for, you know, the whole four hours following the bombs and even when they went off. My burn injuries and injury to my foot, i know, came from the first blast. I actually saw fire in front of my face and on the ground around me from that. My body was lifted off the ground during the first blast and it was very loud and i started running towards the exit. Started running towards the exit and i had taken a couple steps about three seconds later the second blast went off and it went off to my right and i could feel the blast. I feel very lucky to have made it out with the injuries that i had being so close. I hope those other families know that as many care about them and that are wishing them the best.
