Its a pool of funds, combination of funds that will pay for the station primarily from the businesses and residents that are in that tax district neighborhood already in addition to the developer contributions that will come over the period of years. But these public hearings will allow the public to weigh in on this and they could start as soon as late april. Well hear more about that proposal and what some people think about it. A big change could be coming to commuters on i 66 inside the beltway. Vdot announced major plans to make the main artery a toll road. Pat has more. Vdot wants to convert all lanes inside the beltway to high occupancy toll lanes during rush hours. Right now cars with just a driver inside cant use i 66 inside the beltway during the rush hour. This plu nu plan would allow everyone to use the lanes but they would be hov three lanes meaning only those cars with a driver and two passengers would be able to use those lanes for free. During all peak hours, all lanes would be free to all drivers. Today when you hit 66 coming from outside the beltway and hit the beltway, you have three options go north, go south, or break the law and drive inside. Were going to provide you with a different fopgs the project moves forward. You can still go north or south or choose to pay a toll. This proposal comes just a day after plans were announced to create toll lanes and widen i66 outside of the beltway. If i approved tolls could begin in 2017. This evening another twist in the case of that North Carolina teenager who was murdered while she was visiting her sister in maryland. A judge dismissed the indictment earlier today against Michael Johnson in the case of Felicia Barnes. Barnes vanished in 2010 while visiting baltimore and her body was found months later in the susquehanna river. This would have been johnsons third trial for this murder. C. s Traffic Cameras are quite lucrative as many of us know personally. Bringing in millions of dollars in fines each year. Thats right. A news4 investigation found that a small number of the cameras are actually responsible for the vast majority of tickets. While some issues fuse one. Reporter we found that four cameras out of the more than 200 cameras city wide are actually responsible for more than a third of all the tickets issued last year. And those four cameras are all located on major commuter routes. D. C. Traffic cameras issue so many tickets one single camera can bring in millions of dollars in just one year. The first red light cam flas the district went up in 1999. In 2005 d. C. Installed the first stationary speed camera in the nation. Now d. C. Brings in tens of millions of dollars a year from photo enforcement. Last year the vast majority of that money came from just four cameras. This camera here on branch avenue issued more than 11,000 tickets. This camera on new york avenue more than 25,000 tickets. This camera here on suit land parkway, more than 30,000 tickets. But this camera here on k street has issued more tickets than any camera in the district by far, more than 41,000 tickets last year. According to documents obtained through the freedom of information act, out of the more than 350,000 tickets eschewed last year more than 109,000 were issued by these four cameras. The district has more than 200 cameras deployed. Dozens of those issued 50 tickets or fewer last year. Four cameras issued just one ticket each. In a written statement, a spokesperson for the Police Department explains, its not surprising at all that there is a great deal of disparity between camera sites. The most obvious reason is some of our roads carry more vehicles than others and have more vie laleh or thes. The top sites are all main entry points for the si with multilane road designed to carry a large number of vehicles. As for why some cameras issue sod few tickets chief cathy lanier offered several reasons. Significant drop auchs during snow days. Significant drop auchoffdropoffs. Battery replacement problems some hit by car, some vandalized. Reporter some Council Members werent happy with those answers. Failure to maintain failure to consider the proper placement of these cameras. Reporter lanier said because of the recent dropoff in tickets issued by so many cameras shes not going to install any new cameras until a ve re view of the Spire Program is completed. The best answer i can give you is well hire an outside auditor to audit the whole process start to finish to determine where the weak spots are. Reporter its important to know since the district started using speed and redlight cameras traffic fatalityies have dropped by nearly 70 . At 6 00, ill show you where the cameras that issued the fewest tickets are located and well hear from one lawmaker whos questioning whether control of the speed camera should be taken away from the Police Department.
