Normalcy this afternoon but there are counsellors and chaplins on hand counseling those people who need help who were emotionally upset by seeing police here, relieving the nightmare of the horror of the shootings of two years ago. [ sirens ] the emergency call came in at 7 29 a. M. , prompting this immediate response. Heavily armed local and federal law officers converging on the navy yard, which was put on lockdown. Employees sheltering in place. The initial call came from someone inside the navy yard who said they thought they heard gunshots. We did take every call seriously and when we heard a call go out for a potential active shooter we brought the resources. Reporter the report of a potential active shooter turned out not to be true but Officials Say the caller did the right thing by alerting police. The two and a halfhour incident closed m street between south capitol and 11th street southeast. Other buildings with federal agencies and even some schools were closed as well. Officers at the navy yard searched building 197, interviewing employees. Emotions ran high because thats the same building where in 2013 a lone gunman killed 12 people. But today the investigation revealed there was no gunman, no shots fired, no one was hurt. Im very proud of all of the officials that anticipated the call. We know that there have been a lot of Lessons Learned from that previous incident fatality here at the navy yard and we have found that there has been a clear, coordinated and convincing response to the scene. Reporter the navy along with the d. C. Police department and federal agencies will hold an afteraction meeting to debrief and see what went right here today and what procedures could be improved for future joint police operations. Thats the latest from the Washington Navy yard live. Chris gordon news4. Many of the employees inside building 197 this morning had just recently gone back to that building. News4s Scott Macfarlane joins us now and scott, big changes at the Naval Sea Systems Command center since september 2013. A lot of those work he is just returned to their offices a few weeks ago. After the shootings, the navy gutted building 197, changed the look, the layout, some of the security setup, too changed the furniture and paint cover, in part to make it easier for traumatized workers to return many of the 3,000 employees have been temporarily relocateded to an Old Coast Guard building in southwest d. C. They did that during all those renovation renovation. The navy granted special permission for some workers to set up offices outside building 197 as recently so they never have to return to that old shooting site. The military used 400 counselors and Mental Health providers to help employees cope with that tragedy and some of those coupe sellers, pat, were made available again to workers today, as chris gordon just told you. Mansion murders has just fired his attorney. Darron wint was supposed to have a preliminary hearing today but just before it got started, he informed the judge he wanted to change his defense team. This is the second time wint is changing lawyers. Now, he is going to be represented by the same public defender that originally took on his case. Not too long ago wints now former attorneys spoke about why wint fired him. He has decided that there is a difference in opinion on how we wanted to move forward with this. I understand why he decided to do what he did and im absolutely confident that pds will more than adequately represent him. Because of the change, wints preliminary hearing has been postponed but he will be back in court later this month. We have only seep a shower or two today, but we havent seep much of the sun. A thick plume of toxic smoke is spewing out of a derailed train in tennessee. One of the cars on the csx train went off the tracks overnight about 15 miles from knoxville. The train was carrying a highly toxic and flammable substance which cause fire. Now, the fumes are dangerous to breathe, so First Responders had to wake up 5,000 people in the middle of the night and tell them to get out of their homes. 30 people had to go to the hospital after suffering some breathing problems from those fumes and residents may not be able to go home until tomorrow. Survivors describe sheer panic after a ferry capsized in the philippines. Nearly 200 people were on the ferry when it flipped over. At least 36 people were killed. The Philippine Coast guard and nearby fishermen rescued more than 100 people. As many as 20 are still missing. At least three americans are among the survivors. One told the Associated Press that the ferry turned over so fast, there wasnt enough time to jump clear of the ship and passengers were screaming in terror. He lost his credentials for the games and a public defender was appointed to represent him next week. Most workers in Montgomery County will soon be getting paid sick leave. A bill signed today requires companies to provide one hour of sick leave for every 30 hours of work, a maximum of seven sick days every year. Montgomery county is among the first jurisdictions in the nation to require sick leave. The law takes effect in october of next year. Police found the bodies of mike and tina car reek ya, they were in the backyard of a mans home. The man is charged with two counts of firstdegree murder. The couple is in their early 40s and disappeared ten days ago. Authorities in the phoenix area say they are confident they have the right person in custody. Essentially, he confessed.
