What we want to do here today is make people understand that these drinks, this amount of caffeine, how its ingested, can have dire according to the mayo clin. Joining us now, chief of cardiology at the heart institute, were hearing about more and more of these cases. Whats happening now . Are young people drinking it at too young an age, are they drinking too much . Caffeine is everywhere in our society. 10yearolds, 1 in 5 10yearolds has a caffeinated beverage every day. Its really everywhere right now. In this case, the 16yearold had a soda and a coffee and an energy drink within a short period of time. I believe it was two hours. All of that contained more caffeine than the recommended daily amount . Probably six times what a young adult or adolescent child should consume in a day. So across two amount, its the size of the individual and how quickly they ingest it. I try to limit my coffee to one, sometimes two a day. But if you take a look at what most people consume, you may have coffee for breakfast, a soda can your lunch or a snack and red bull if youre really tired and didnt get enough sleep the previous night. How much caffeine is in these drinks. Cocacola, mountain dew, coffee and red bull. Coke will have about 35 milligrams. Mountain dew about one and a half times that. Coffee can have up to seven or eight cups of coffee. And an energy drink could have eight or ten cups of coffees stimulants. So how much is too much . How do you know if its too much for that 16yearold . The limit is about 100 milligrams per day for a child, by that might be two cokes, for example. Wow. A Single Energy drink might exceed three or four or five times what a child should consume during a day. Younger individuals, smaller individuals, are more at risk. As we get older, are our hearts at greater risk from caffeine . Weve seen er visits soar in the country over Energy Drinks and the increasing use of caffeine. Young adults and even adults as well as children can get into problems with caffeine. But the problem is concentrated with young adults because the drinks are marketed to them. So parents should talk to their children so they understand the risks. Indeed. Around the world, Energy Drinks are becoming regulated and i think its time for us to act. The fda caffeine can be in a soda, but not in an energy drink. Thanks so much. For three years in a row, we were the most fit city in the country. But not anymore. Weve dropped to number two.
