E first is that the ntsb confirms there two trains two trains in that tunnel beneath Lenphant Plaza when this happened one stopped in the tunl south of the station at 3 15 p. M. And then a second train, a following train that stopped at 3 25 100 feet short of the platform. Both were sixcar trains and people in both of those trains in all of those cars were affected by heavy smoke. The second headline deals with the third rail and how it may have contributed to a they in rescuing people from those trains. I am reading right now from the ntsb report. It says ntsb investigators have inspected the area of the incident where they observed severe e damage to the third rail and electrical cables about 1,100 feet ahead of the first train that stopped at 3 16. We have a picture included in this report to show you what that looks like. This is significant. Recorded data shows about 3 16 p. M. , t ten minutes even before that first train stopped, about 3 06 00 p. M. An electric breaker one end of the section of the third rail tripped, opened. That means that that section of the third rail was not working. However, at about 3 16 p. M. Metro operations control began ac ventila fans in an efft to remove smoke from the area and the electrical breaker at the other en the third ra remained closed meaning it continued to supply power to the third rail until about 3 50 p. M. So you can see the time there. The first train stopped 3 15 second train stopped at 3 25. And there is power, according to this report t third rail until 3 50 p. M. Which contribud very likely to why these passengers br were being told to stay on the train and in it appear firefights being able to get down directly and re.
