With one swipe he showed this man how he could steal his credit card information putting his private information on a hotel key, when swiped was an exact replica of the mans card. Frightening. I would hope i would only give my card to people doing the transaction. To further demonstrate his point. He cloned his own credit card on to a hotel key and took that hotel key to Dunkin Donuts and bought a large iced room coffee. We just did that with a hotel key that ends in 333 just like the credit card. Europe moved away from it 20 years ago and using cards with a chip that has an em boded code, much more hacker resistant. If america was using Chip Technology the data breach would have less impact. Chip technology is used all over the world, Even North Korea but not here. Cost is a primary factor because it is going to be expensive to make this conversion and since fraud has been manageable until recently the Business Case hasnt been there. We looked into the cost to make a card with Chip Technology and cost about a dollar per card. American express and mastercard made millions in profits last year.
