Yeah, weve had lightning lighting up our skies, loud thunder, all coming from a storm that developed over gaithersburg. Right now its over northeast washington, coming into northern off to the south and east. Look at all the lightning. Hundreds of lightning bolts, reports of peasized hail. Theres the view showing all the lightning that weve had coming quite a bit here over the last just half hour or so. Its going to continue moving on into southern Prince Georges County, and dissipating over the next hour or so. An update on our heat wave is coming up in just a few minutes. Party rules officially gave all 19 to trump because he was the only formal nominee. This is an outrage. This is an insult to the nominee donald trump. No, we just wanted to state where we were back in march, on march 12th, where we had our first state convention weve had in 12 years. We had 3,000 d. C. Republicans show up and they split 9 for rubio, 10 for kasich. And we wanted that stated. Reporter the formal vote interstate some d. C. Voters. A lot has been made about protests and security in cleveland. Its been pretty quiet so far. What have you seen tonight . Reporter its been fine, jim. I was on a shuttle bus heading to the secure zone earlier tonight and it got stopped for half an hour because protesters were moving through, but they just walked through in one long line. The police went back to doing what they were doing and there was no problem. One of our Law Enforcement sources said its actually really calm. Its under control tonight. Surprising, giving the expectations coming into the convention and what we saw earlier this afternoon where we saw police having to get involved in a scuffle and sort of separate protesters. At one point in the market square, you had representatives from the black lives matter, the west Boro Baptist Church militiamen who were fully armed. Im not saying that to put them all in the same basket, just stating that to say this was a wide variety of people with very, very political and idealogical backgrounds and the police were able to get in there, sort of separate the square into two sections and move on without any arrests. Most of the fireworks have been happening inside the arena. We saw tom touch on that with the d. C. Delegation. I saw it yesterday for myself with virginia. There have been these protests on the floor of the convention. But i get the sense now from talking to delegates from virginia that they fought the fight. Its over now. There really is nowhere to go, and i think tomorrow we start to see mr. Trumps family take the stand, mike pence take the stand. A lot of them are saying at the henld of the day we want the at Hillary Clinton in november. I look for a subtle shift in tone starting tomorrow. Speaking of Donald Trumps democratic challenger Hillary Clinton, was in las vegas today. She called the first day of the rnc surreal and compared trumps walk onto the stage last night to the wizard of oz. Lots of sound and fury, even a fog machine. But when you pulled back the curtain, it was just donald trump with nothing to offer to the american people. Today we learned clinton and trumps first meeting on the debate stage is moving to new york now. Dayton, ohios Wright State University bowed out due to security concerns. Officer Robert Melton was wearing a bullet resistant vest when he was hit while searching for a suspect in a driveby shooting. He was rushed to a hospital where he died. Funeral arrangements are set for two of the three officers killed over the weekend in baton rouge. Police say the officers were ambushed by a lone gunman. A former marine from missouri, they believe he intended to shoot anyone wearing a badge. The recent killings of Police Officers and shootings of black men by police have led to tension all over the country. Tonight in Montgomery County, officers came together with the community to talk about preventing scenes like that from developing here. Shomorai stone reports from silver spring. I do worry, because as a black man, i can be likes Montgomery County but is concerned about racial profiling. Theres always the chance that driving through various communities and a nice vehicle that i might be stopped based on a perception. Reporter tonight, Montgomery County police, the naacp, religious leaders, politicians and people who live in the county met to talk about race issues and Police Relations in a packed room in downtown silver spring. County executives shared a story how he was racially profiled while putting up campaign signs. I am dressed in jeans, sweater, and a baseball cap. Thats the way im dressed. And he jumped out swearing and cursing at me and im saying to myself, this is not real. Reporter the Community Wants to prevent that from happening and theyre concerned about what has happened around the nation. Police shot and killed alton sterling in baton rouge, two gunman shot and killed Police Officers in dallas and baton rouge in separate interests. Many of us have family members that are Law Enforcement officers. We want them to come home every night. But we have young people that want to grow up and go to college. Hire the right people, invest in their training, andld my officers accountable to do the job the w its supposed to be done. Law enforcement is trying to do a job, and i think its important that we as a community, express both appreciation but also realistic concerns. Thats shomari stone reporting from silver spring. Right now, the bw parkway is back open. This afternoon, a car ran into a contractor who was mowing grass in the median. At last check, that man was in critical condition. Hes a contractor for the National Park service. The accident happened about 3 45 this afternoon. It led to some huge rush. Investigators are still trying to figure out if the car left the roadway or if it was the mower that left the median. Metro riders, the fifth safe track surge begins tomorrow. That means train also be single tracking through july 31st. Top metro leaders are trying tonight to figure out why track switches and signals continue to malfunction in an area that was just addressed by a safe track surge. The problems on part of the track just outside the stadium armory station. In some cases its caused significant delays. Metro is working to fix the problem as soon as possible. Still ahead, medical authorities are investigating the first case of zika virus in the u. S. That does not involve international travel. Florida Health Officials say theyre investigating a possible case of zika in miamidade county. A case that may not have been carried here by travel to another country. Meantime, someone got the zika mystery how. The patient had not traveled abroad, and zika carrying mosquitos have not been found in utah. The patient did care for a man who died from zika, but there was no sexual contact. This case is raising Big Questions about how the virus might spread. Sad day in the local sports community. Many of you have been sharing your memories all night. Legendary redskins fan chief z has died. Youve seen him before if youve ever watched a game, and tonight, fans held a vigil. Reporter friends gathered at redskins park in ashburn to light a candle, reminisce, and hold a moment of silence in memory of chief z. This is devastating. But, you in spirit, thats for sure. Ive never seen faces light as much as when chief walked into a room. Reporter the chief, whose real name was zimo williams, died in his sleep at his home. The retired car salesmans devotion to the redskins scans four decades. Fans say his presence will definitely be missed during the upcoming football season, but some see it as a rallying point for the fans and the team. The chief was someone who would liven up the crowds, in the stadium, in the tailgating parties. Every child platoon fr balloon from the chief. I want to give you a thank you for helping me out. Then the moon everybody was watching the full moon. Love this view right around the capital. Theres the moon rising. But now tonight were dealing with a lot of thunder and lightning. Thats the back edge of the storm beginning to move out of the district, but its heading off to the east and southeast and theres a lot of lightning with this and hail as well. Got reports as much as hail the size of marbles, pea size to marblesized hail in northeast d. C. Just a few minutes ago, you could hardly see union station, but you can still see some lightning there. The live view from our capital camera, moving awe through Prince Georges County. Looks like its weakening just a little bit. This area in the orange is the warning zone that extends down into southeastern Prince Georges County, affecting all the way midnight. Its going to be coming through with some downpours and lightning. Heres the lightning history with this. Weve had hundreds of lightning bolts. When it first got going just around gaithersburg, and now you can see the lightning bolts head across northern Prince Georges County. The rest of the evening in the low 70s, upper 60s by dawn tomorrow, with some sunshine back. The humidity is going to be beautiful tomorrow, and into thursday, though, its going to begin to get rather annoying with oppressive humidity moving in that will be in place on friday. So enjoy this break from the high humidity as we get into tomorrow and most of thursday. And we are going to have our temperatures soaring. Tomorrows high will be pleasant, in the upper 80s. Then near 90 on thursday as the humidity increases. Here comes a monster heat wave, up near 100 degrees for four days in a row. Friday, saturday, sunday, and monday. And on satur afternoon, pretty good chance of scattered, isolated thunderstorms cooking up in all that heat. So major heat wave friday, saturday, sunday, monday. Then it cools down. Still a chance of afternoon storms, as we get into midweek next week with highs just in the low 90s. So watch out if you have plans to get out during the afternoon over the weekend, you may be interrupted by some very strong storms during the afternoon, breaking some of the heat, at least temporarily.
