tay tay a severe storms, just some downpours with thunder and lightning tracking into the lower neck of virginia, lower part of the eastern shore. coming up in a few minutes, a look at another heat wave on the way. we may have our hottest temperatures of the summer so far coming up in the next few days. looking at when they arrive and when they leave. that's in just a few minute donald j. trump is ready to serve and lead this country as the next president of the united states! [ cheers and applause ] >> this has been an unusual campaign and the start to this year's republican national convention, it was kind of unusual, too. >> it was. donald trump's wife melania introduced herself to the world tonight. that was after speakers who took on the black lives matter movement hillary clinton's handling of the attacks in bengha benghazi. >> and an introduction by her husband that we've certainly never seen before, the candidate appearing on stage before the last night of the convention arriving like a rock star. news4 has team coverage tonight from quicken loans arena in cleveland starting with steve handelsman and what we saw on day one. >> reporter: donald trump ignored yetot tradition and came to his convention on the first night. >> we're going to win. we're going to win so big. >> reporter: he was the warm-up act for his wife melania. >> an amazing mother, an incredible woman, melania trump. >> reporter: melania, 46, from slovenia was a model now a mom, married to donald in 2005. >> if you want someone to work for you and your country, i can assure you, he's the guy. >> reporter: the convention began with conflict. anti-trump forces disrupted, demanding delegates decide if trump delegates can vote for somebody else. you don't want trump to be the nominee. >> i personally don't want trump to be the nominee. the world just got to witness the tyrannical man who will stomp the grassroots. >> reporter: like melania trump said, she has. the trump campaign already out with a video showing today's anti-trump disruption. i'm steve handelsman, nbc news at the rnc in cleveland. >> and our team coverage continues now with news4's chris lawrence. he's inside the arena now. >> he went to see how the message was getting to people outside. what were you hearing tonight? >> reporter: bottom line, that a lot of women, a lot of republican women are just fine with donald trump as their nominee. look, they don't like the fact that he made that snide comment about carly fiorina's face or called rosie o'donnell fat. but they're not looking at those comments in a vacuum, and they refuse to just write him off. >> the way he reacts and says things, yeah, that bothers me. but the big picture for me and where america is going. and i can't go the other way. i can't go with hillary, i just can't. >> he's a beautiful man. he's a family successful and good people, and i think that shows a lot about somebody. >> reporter: so look, there is a reason that melania trump was the headliner of the first night of the convention. there was a reason she talked about her husband. there was a reason that you heard rudy giuliani use words like friend, husband, father, grandfather. these are not the words that pop into your mind when you think of donald trump, but this is part of the appeal, part of trying to rework his image to appeal to those all-important female voters. jim, doreen. >> reporte >> chris, you were right in the middle of that chaos that erupted on the floor this afternoon. give us your impression of day one right out of the gate they came out. >> reporter: yeah, two things, jim. there is a fracture in the party, no doubt. we saw that play out when you're watching ken cuccinelli badge around, people shouting and booing rhein preibus, the president of the rnc. you can see this isn't a tightly controlled convention. i say that because on one hand, you've got people delivering this message down here about pull up your bootstraps, work hard, you'll get ahead, this is america. well, that sort of runs counter to what donald trump's fabulous appeal has been, that these trade deals have rigged the system, that it's not enough to work hard, that there are forces in machine to keep the american man from succeeding. there is sort of a cross-current, and that's one of the things that sort of jumped out at me tonight. again, we've got a few days to go, and this could be a very unified convention by the time we're standing here on thursday. >> stay tuned. as we've seen, anything can happen. chris, thank you so much and stay with us for our continued coverage of the rnc all week long. chris and budgeted for the great escape. thanks to virtual wallet by pnc. ♪ for the second time in less than a year, police in montgomery county are investigating a deadly crash involving a bicyclist at the happened. >> reporter: it happened at the same crosswalk where 19-year-old frank towers died just seven months ago on his bike. veers mill road and turkey branch parkway in rockville. >> for it to happen again is unbelievable. they supposedly have improved the intersection and all those things, but when we went there today and pushed the button, it didn't work. >> reporter: after frank's death, there were calls for making this crosswalk safer. >> there needs to be a speed limit change or a red light friends have set out these ghost bikes near the crash scene not only as a lasting memorial to him but also as a reminder to motorists the deadly consequences. the driver who allegedly ran over the teen was acquitted on the charge. the judge said the law only applied to pedestrians, not
