Thats a shame. Reporter allen lehman is saddened. A 9yearold girl died in this crash near his house in Prince Georges County. This is a bad intersection. They have accidents probably once a month. But this is the first time i recall a fatality. Reporter police tell me the 9yearold was a passenger in this bmw. Her mother was the driver. They tried to make a left on to Canberra Drive from woodyard road. They turned in front of this car, police say, causing to it flip over. The driver has two broken legs. And an injured back. The 9yearold died on the scene. And her mother isnt seriously injured. Its going to be tough on them and her. Not to mention the rest of the family. Reporter its the second crash tonight. At about 6 30 this evening, a car hit a pedestrian at kenilworth avenue and riverdale road in riverdale. Medics found one person with serious injuries. Police havent told us if its a man or a woman. Authorities did tell us the end of daylight savings could be cause mortgage accidents. According to the National Safety council, traffic fatalities are three times greater at night than during the day. A shame. Reporter now police have not released the name of this 9yearold. Tonight the beginnings of relief and closure for three families terrorized by a killer. Now that man is expected to spend the rest of his life in prison. The jury convicted Charles Severance on all ten counts today in the murders of ruth ann lodato, ron kirby and nancy dunning. They remmed three life sentences. In court kirbys widow recalls the last time she spoke to him, saying the last time he ever said to me was to call me when you get lost, and i am truly lost without him. The verdict brings a sense of closure to an entire community there is no cold case for a homicide of this nature. Unfortunately, other victims got in the way of this particular person who committed these crimes. Today hopefully that person will never harm anyone in any community again. Charles severance is scheduled to officially be sentenced in january. His attorneys are expected to appeal. Its back to the drawing board tonight for metro. The yearlong search for a general manager hit a huge snag today. News4 was first to report last week the Transit Agency had zeroed in on neil cohen. But this afternoon, metro announced negotiations had ended. Transportation reporter adam tuss now with what is next for metro. Reporter well, in the end, an aerospace and defense expert with a financial background and a background in aviation was not the man to run metro. Neil cohen will not be the general manager of metro, even though the two sides were this close to signing a deal. Sources say cohen became increasingly uneasy with his name out in the public before he had even signed a contract. And now what the metro board has to do is go back to the remaining candidates. Were told there are four other candidates that the metro board will go to, tell them the position is open once again, and see if they want to be the person that runs the Transit Agency. In the district, adam tuss, news4. The process to find a new gm started over a year ago when then general manager announced in september of 2014 that he would be retiring. But just a month after he left the job, three finalists withdrew their names, forcing metro to start over. Fast forward almost eight months, the fta assumes safety oversight in metro in part because of a lack of permanent leadership. Then adam learned just last week that neil cohen would be tapped for the top spot. That all again changed today when metro announced it and cohen mutually agreed to part ways. Right now d. C. Police about how these two people died. Now they are described as a man and a woman, a couple in their late 20s or early 30s. According to neighbors. Now what we can tell you is that police are calling this a death investigation. Not a homicide right now. And that the commander of the First Police District is calling this an isolated incident. Now there was an initial crime alert that went out this evening that referred to this as a shooting, we are told. That was in error that is not correct. Now we do know police were called here around 3 30 this afternoon to check on the welfare of the couple. Neighbors tell us they were in the process of renovating this town house and when we arrived, every window on the second floor was open. It is not clear whether police opened them. Investigators also examined photographs and then towed away a vehicle that was parked nearby. My sources tell me there was no sign of forced entry into the house. So right now it appears that police are saying this was an isolated incident. Should it not be caused for greater concern in the neighborhood. They tell us the area is way too dark at night, and there has been an uptick in crime because of it. Tonight people brought flashlights, urging police to pay more attention to the northeast part of the district when it comes to Crime Prevention efforts. Surveillance video helped police find a man accused of assaulting a 13yearold boy in arlington. 31yearold Ahmed Al Khatib is accused of touching the boy while he slept in a room near the boston mall. The boy says he woke up and found his pants down. He quickly ran away and told a cousin who works in the building. Police arrested el khatib after looking at the surveillance video. We learn but all but one of the five students injured in the fire at Woodson High School have now been released from the hospital. The students still in the hospital is undergoing surgery for serious burns. The fire started while a chemistry teacher was doing a demonstration last friday. Today the School Superintendent banned the use of open flames in the classroom until further notice. She also ordered a review of the School Systems Science Curriculum and all science teachers will need to review safety protocols for the classroom. A pair of crafty thieves are using the art of distraction to rob women blind in montgomery county. Police tell us the people in this surveillance picture stole from women in Federal Plaza in rockville. One distracts the victim while the other steals a credit card from her purse. But they leave that purse behind. The move means it can take victims days to figure out the cards are missing. And it also gives the pick pockets more time to ring up a big bill with the cards. He is referred to by the fbi as the forever loyal bandit for the shirt he has been seen robbing banks in over the past couple of years in Fairfax County. The fbi believes the man seen robbing the Capital One Bank in the seven Corner Center friday afternoon is the same man who robbed three other banks in the summer of 2014. Maryland casinos want the right to make it harder for you to win at their slot machines. Casinos have asked state leaders to lower the amount of money theyre required to pay out when you pull the handle. A review by Scott Mcfarland and the news4 iteam say some fear its marylands problem gamblers who might end up losing bigtime. Reporter everyone hates to lose at the slots. But some people hate it more than others. Watch these players at maryland live in recent month, beating, headbutting slot machines, breaking them. The video obtained from state police. Some have even fired off emails and letters to marylands state Gaming Commission complaining of low payouts. Saying these machines have a low to nonexistent payout. Im taking my money to delaware. Another questioning if maryland is driving out gamblers on fixed incomes. The combinationsed on permutation and the noise and the themes. Reporter Michael Rosen says its easy to be sucked in by the slot, even when you dont win. He should know. See a recovering problem gambler. You zone Everything Else out, especially today. When i was younger the slot machine was a onearmed bandit. You pulled the handle. But now its like playing a video game. Reporter he says it isnt money motivating some addicted gamblers. Youre playing for the adrenaline. Absolutely for the adrenaline. Reporter and soon even fewer gamblers could walk away winners. State Officials Say maryland casinos are now asking for permission to drop the payouts lower. Using public records request, news4 team found the payouts at every casino in west virginia, maryland, delaware, and new jersey. And as you can see, most maryland casinos are near average. For now. A formal regulation change under consideration now would allow maryland to lower payout to as little as 87 cents on the dollar on average. Lower than the payout at casinos throughout the region. And only one of the states casinos, hollywood would tell the iteam why theyre pushing for potentially lower payout, saying its an opportunity for the casino and statebacked taxpayers who get a cut to collect additional revenue. But some would worry what would happen next. Problem gamblers are not very sensitive to payout. Reporter thats particularly problematic because lower payouts may attract more gamblers, may encourage people to gamble longer because theyre hoping to win back the money they lost. Reporter even if the state rakes in more money from losing gamblers, it would not be required to spend more on programs to help problem gamblers. As of now casinos must pay 450 per slot machine each year into a fund to help the addicted. But state gaming Officials Say even if payouts are lowered and the regulations change, the fee would stay the same. The state would keep more money there would be more revenue from the slot machines, but there wouldnt be more money going to the problem gambling fund. Reporter Michael Rosen says no matter what changes are made the addict ready always drawn back until they seek help. There is always the hope theyre going to hit. Reporter hollywood says it must stay competitive. It has no plans to change the payouts of its slot machines and they want the change to allow casinos more flexibility there are safeguards in place to help problem gamblers in maryland, including a voluntary Exclusion Program in which more than 900 people have registered to ban themselves from state casinos. But most of them will be on the light side, if we see any at all. They will be very light. Take an umbrella with you, just in case. Now on friday, well see a cold front come through. That cold front out ahead of it will boost temperatures to 78 degrees. Thats going to be a very warm day for sure. A lot of wind too. Could be rather breezy. 30 chance of showers that would be late friday night. Maybe by the time youre out to dinner. The weekend, 67 degrees on your saturday. 54 degrees on sunday. Temperatures will actually fall during the day on saturday. There will be more sun on sunday. And its going to be a little bit of a chilly weekend. But all in all, not bad out there at all.
