we're seeing winds gusting over 30 miles per hour. windchills already in the single digits. we're just getting started with this cold air. two volunteer emts were hurt in a horrible crash. >> the crash happened on sunday on the beltway near river road and one victim is an ameri and the other a recent graduate. jackie benson is live in bethesda with details. jackie? >> reporter: doreen this fire department draws many volunteers from the ranks of local college students often pre-med students who want to serve the community even though the job does have a great risk involved. when an ambulance rolls out of the fire department station on massachusetts avenue in bethesda there are often volunteer emergency medical technicians on board. sidney marshall who just turned 20 and tom, were onboard responding to a car crash on the inner loop near river road. the weather was terrible and winds gusting over 40 miles per hour. still pictures from the scene show the catastrophic aftermath of what happened as the four-member ambulance crew tended ps from the original crash. a white toyota car role la on the shoulder. the driver of a red ford f-150 pickup truck lost control and collided with the toyota and marshal and shriver. one of the other emts called for help. >> we were on the right shoulder and there are two member who is are down. >> reporter: john witherspoon is president of the board who runs the fire department. the injuries are de one of them has what i was -- what was described to me as a chip fracture in his skull, has, i believe, 18 metal staples in his scalp. the other injured emt has more stitches in her face than the doctor was able to count. >> reporter: both of the injured emts are described as young people any parent would love to have as their own. very much respected for their professionalism and the department is asking the local community in this area to send them their best thoughts, support them and pray for them. jackie benson, news4. >> jackie thank you. this system moved through fast and dumping snow on the roads at the height of rush hour. here's a live lockout side right now. traffic is moving smoothly but slowly in montgomery county. some schools are taking the safe route. federicksburg and spotsylvania. how low will it go tonight doug? >> it's amazing how low it is right now. temperatures rose to the freezing mark and wind is ushering bitterly cold ai 30 miles out towards easton and over towards martinsburg. windchills between 5 and 15 below zero. a windchill advisory in effect for the entire region. i'll show you where the cold night stands coming up in just a minute. >> thanks, doug. >> locking at the conditions on the road right now, it stayed long enough to make the roads wet. drivers are concerned about what they can't see. chris lawrence has been traveling the region all night long. he's in arlington. chris? >> reporter: major highways like 395 are fine right now but it is getting so cold so quickly, even a little bit of moisture will quickly turn to ice. the snow hit our area like a boxer with one good punch. a 15-minute whiteout and it made a wet mess of the evening commute. the fairfax area had backups and drivers are worried what will happen next. >> will i have to worry about ice? >> reporter: at least snow is something that they can see. >> you never know when you're going to hit black ice and spin out. >> reporter: they say anything under 8 to 10 inches they can handle. which some streets still slushy -- >> the roads are so bad and they don't treat the roads. >> reporter: and temperatures plummeting and windchills 10 to 20 below zero even more ice is on the way. >> i'm really worried about that. >> reporter: and with good reason. we could feel this wind really cutting through now and it's only going to get colder. reporting live in arlington, chris lawrence news4. >> chris thank you. new details in a local hotel murder mystery. a search warrant reveals police found a wallet a cell phone, a computer and a condom in the room where david messerschmitt was staying at the donovan downtown. he lived on capitol hill and worked for a law firm downtown. investigators released this surveillance video last week showing a person of interest in the case. at this point, no one's been arrested. a man who targeted senior citizens including the parents of d.c. mayor is going to spend the next nine years in prison a judge today sentenced tyrone calliham. he would pose as a cable guy and then once he got in people's homes, he would steal. before he was caught he actually "liked" a facebook post about his crimes. new at 11:00, the fbi is on the hunt for two men who robbed two banks in less than an hour in virginia today. they first hit this bb & t in viena and then went to sterling and held one person at gunpoint. police are investigating a deadly crash by a person that they suspect wasdrunk. chopper 4 flew over that scene. police say a red suv hit a woman named vanessa dixon and she was standing near a bus stop in silver spring. she was 49 years old. police identified the driver as david rodriguez. they say he also hit two other cars. they locked him up now on a suspicion of drunk driving. a guilty plea in the murder of a harvard university student. omar was killed in 2013 during a botched burglary. la guard and an accomplice forced him to the ground and the accomplice has never been found. facing 20 to 30 years in prison when he is sentenced in may. gas prices are already on the rise everywhere but they did spike in california after an explosion there destroyed part of a refinery just outside los angeles. many in the town of torrance california thought it was an earthquake when that blast ripped apart buildings at the exxonmobil plant there. flames were shooting from a stack afterwards. they still don't know what caused the explosion but it happened in a relatively new part of that plant. four people suffered minor injuries. now to a hospital scare that could have exposed nearly 200 people to a potentially deadly and drug-resistant bacteria. ucla says seven people have been infected and may be linked to two deaths involving a bacteria known as cre, something extremely difficult to treat and deadly for half infected. the scare appears to be linked to contaminated endoscopes used to examine the inside of the throat. maryland's governor continues to talk about running for the white house. a spokesperson says it's an opportunity to talk about national issues with its supporters. o'malley will visit new hampshire and iowa next month. nearly half of the montgomery county school buildings will have space shortages in the next five years according to the school board president who said there's no end in sight to the growth. since 2007 they've had an influx of 28,000 additional students. that's been a heavy reliance on portable classrooms. next at 11:00, problems at the polls, from technical up half an inch but that was really about it. what are we dealing with across our area? it's only the cold air. 23 degrees. look at the windchill. down to 11 and winds still gusting to over 30 miles per hour. 16 in martinsburg, 20 in d.c. but you add in the winds and you get 1 degrees in gaithersburg and windchill advisory in effect through the entire day tomorrow for windchills between 5 and 15 below zero. it encompasses our entire region. it's going to be dangerously cold air overnight tonight and through the day. here's what is going to be feeling like overnight tonight into early tomorrow mo how about 6 below in d.c. 10 below in frederick and 10 below in winchester. look what happens at 1:00 in the afternoon, not warming much at all. 2 in d.c. even during the afternoon. so tomorrow is going to be one extremely cold day but it gets colder. 7:00 we're still down in the negative numbers. but watch on friday morning, look at this 18 below in frederick, near 20 below in martinsburg and 13 in the d.c. metro area. that's extremely cold for this time period and extremely cold for the month of february. record-breaking cold as a matter of fact. in national on friday 8 degrees set in 1896. i think we're going to break that by 4 degrees. dulles minus 2 set back in 1979. we could be very close to that. bwi marshall coming in at 4. i think we'll break records early on friday morning. 19 for a high on friday. 32 though on saturday. a late mix moving in. maybe snow early. switching over to all rain for sunday. most of the day on saturday will be dry. saturday won't be a bad afternoon. 50 on sunday but behind that system well we get cold again. 33 on monday. tuesday, coming in at 30 degrees and next wednesday, temperatures still in the mid-30 year our average high
