hurricanes from miami today. a 3:30 kickoff. 75 degrees perfect weather for college football in blacksburg. >> i'm sure a lot of fans are there. >> a huge fan base commutes from here every weekend. >> thanks, chuck. new overnight, a dramatic rescue is caught on tape. after a pilot is forced to make an emergency landing in the ocean. the pilot was flying his twin engine plane from california to hawaii when he road for help. he said he was about to run out of fuel. a coast guard crew had their camera rolling as they guided the pilot down for a safe yet very bumpy landing on the water. this was about 13 miles short of the big island. the pilot was hoisted into their rescue helicopter and flown to a hawaiian hospital where he is expected to be okay. there's an unusual recipe brewing downtown. right now two very different groups there setting upside by side. >> on one side frustrated americans protesting for change. on the other, foodies who just want to eat. derek ward is live in northeast where it is all going down. derek in the middle of it. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, how are you? indeed we are here on freedom plaza were the sun has come up on the group occupy d.c. third day down here in freedom plaza. if you look behind me just beyond the plaza is a corporate symbol. the kind of things that folks might sa say holds too much sway on american politics. on one side of the fence they'll be offering a taste of d.c.'s restaurant fare. on the other side they're hungry for what they see as true representative democracy. physically traversing the fence is a challenge. you've got to go to either end of the plaza. but the message is as free as the air. people here on the plaza think that maybe today they'll have a chance to get their message out to a broader audience. >> i think in general you're going to start seeing more people on saturday. you're going to start seeing people who generally work in d.c. on the workdays. maybe a few tourists. we would like to see a few congressional staffers and some congressmen down here in their weekend clothes if possible. >> announcer: we want to show you a map of the street closures associated with tp events going on here today. there will be some more marches setting off from the plaza today. the permit ends on sunday. some folks say they don't plan to leave. if they do, they'll be taking this message home to their respective homes as well. we're live downtown on freedom plaza back to you. >> thank you very much. there's the protest, the taste of d.c. and unfortunately if you're trying to get around this weekend, that's just the beginning. >> the chain bridge is closed due to ongoing construction. drivers won't be able to turn on to the bridge. these closures are expected every weekend through december. now then there's this major changes on i-295. d dot is opening a new flyover ramp to carry 295 southbound over a new interchange being built with the 11th street bridge project. there will be closures in the area through this afternoon so traffic can be shifted on to the ramp. >> metro riders should expect major delays during this columbus day weekend. on the green and yellow lines the shaw u street and columbia heights stations are closed. they won't open until tuesday morning. shuttle buses will operate between mount vernon square and georgia avenue stations. on the orange line buses will replace trains between east falls church and west falls church. those stations will re-open on monday. tomorrow is the army ten miler which will close streets around arlington. metro will be opening early at 6:00 a.m. to accommodate the crowds. a developing story out of kansas city this morning where investigators appear to have hit a dead end in a search for a missing baby. investigators searched a landfill near the 10-month-old's home for the second time since the girl was reported missing. the baby's mother says police told her she failed a lie detector test and accused her of being involved. she claims the child was snatched from her crib many the middle of the night. prince george police are investigating what is a possible murder-suicide. around 2:30 p.m. police found a male and female both with gunshot wounds. the female was pronounced debt dead at the scene. the two did have a relationship and are looking for a possible motive. the purple line gets the green light from the federal government. the light rail line connecting montgomery and prince georges counties is one step closer. maryland governor says the purple line received federal approval to go into the engineering phase. the 16-mile corridor would link metro's red, green and orange lines in maryland running from bethesda to new carolton. it would connect mark and amtrak lines. it's expected to cost about $2 billion. negotiations for federal funding are still about three years away. television networks appear to be bending over backwards for amanda knox' family in hopes of getting the first interview with the freed student. knox' father says an abc news producer let the family's youngest daughters stay in a room in italy while the appeals case was going on. he says cbs and nbc producers offered their rooms to the girls as well. nbc denies such an offer was made. kurt knox said the producer did not baby sit the girls and was not in the room with them. the trial of dr. conrad murray wrapped up its second week by hearing from murray himself. the court played audiotapes of michael jackson's doctor just days after the singer's death. murray told police that he felt pressure every night to give jackson propofol so he could get to sleep. he said the singer was an i some knee yak and was afraid jackson would cancel rehearsals for the upcoming concert if he didn't get the medicine. murray says he was trying to wean jackson off propofol and the singer injected himself while murray was in the bathroom. >> he said i can't funk if i don't sleep. they'll have to cancel it. and i don't want them to cancel it, but they will have to cancel it. i came back to his bedside and he wasn't breathing. >> if convicted of involuntary manslaughter murray faces up to four weekend when we were stuck with really, really cold weather, high temperatures, we set record low high temperatures on sunday and monday. barely making 52, 53 degrees. this weekend a complete turn around from that. that is welcome news. >> what is going on? i feel like you're having an argument with yourself. >> last weekend was truly the exception. believe me. there's a lot of internal strife. of the river earlier this morning and quite a bit of fog out towards the blue ridge. that will go away shortly. still waiting on the camera to roll over to my side of the studio. temperatures 57 degrees in washington. the wind has gone calm. we're not going to have to worry too much in the way of wind for the course of the weekend. temperatures now all out of the 40s with the lone exception of way western maryland, cumberland maryland at 48 now. winchester 54. downtown 57. 61 in annapolis. 62 in southern maryland. your day planner forecast bright and sunny start to finish today. temperatures in the mid to upper 50s by earlier this morning. and then up to 70 degrees by 12:00, 1:00 this afternoon. temperatures back into the mid 70s by 6:00 p.m. this evening. on the satellite friday. college football. the gators down in baton rouge. the news director versus is assistant news director michigan versus northwestern. i'm going to michigan. 69 degrees. that's out in evanston. the air force academy tripped up navy last week on that crazy two-point conversion. they're out in notre dame, south bend. great weather for that football game. ohio state go to lincoln. 75 degrees a well virginia will not be getting any help from the federal government to help recover from last month's earthquake. the federal emergency management agency denied the state's request for individual aid. the 5.8 magnitude quake caused an estimated $15 million damage in homes and other structures. governor bob mcdonell says he's disappointed with the decision and plans to appeal. it was win or go attack. sullivan with the cross. touch pass to bates and he rips it into the upper 90. virginia upsets maryland 2-1 handing the terps their first loss of the season. high school football game of the week. jacobs finished with four touchdowns for suitland. two on offense, two on defense. and suiteland defeats deval 46-7 improving to 6-0. hometown hockey tonight. the capitals open up their regular
