hit joplin, missouri one week ago today. good sunday everyone. it's neighbors helping neighbors. strangers helping survivors in joplin. president obama spoke at a memorial service today. jay gray joins us more on the service and a long road to recovery from the deadliest tornado in decades. jay? >> no question about that, craig. look, today marks a full week since the tornado that ripped through the city of joplin. a week of heartache, a week of hard work and really just the beginning of that difficult recovery you talk about. the building may be splintered. but the faith and spirit of this community is not. the congregation at peace lutheran church gathered today in the rubble that was their sanctuary, like their city, battered, but not broken. >> god is here. >> that faith and the simple fact that they are still here is what many survivors say keeps them going right now. >> i'm so lucky compared to most people because i walked out of the house with my wife and so many families did not have that opportunity. >> a week later, it's still an emotional struggle to survive here one that will take a long time and a lot of help. >> obviously this is not something we can get through by ourselves. we have to get help and we will look to the state and federal government for that. >> president obama traveled to the strike zone for the first time today. offering a handshake or a hug. and a promise. >> what i've been telling every family that i've met here is we're going to be here long of a the cameras leave. we are not going to stop until joplin is fully back on its feet. >> but right now, joplin is still staggering. they say that there is strength in numbers. this afternoon thousands gathered at a memorial to remember and honor the victims of the storm and perhaps searching for that strength. >> amid heart break and tragedy, no one can a stranger. everybody is a brother. everybody is a sister. we can all love one another. >> a bomb that remains when it seems everything else here has been torn apart. >> and it is a connection that survivors here will lean on during the recovery that is sure to last years. live in joplin, missouri, i'm jay gray. craig, back to you now. >> jay, thanks for that report. every memorial weekend, rolling thunder converges on d.c. to show their support for the military. today about 400,000 bikers road from the pentagon vietnam veteran's memorial. more on what it means for them and there was a special guest appearance. >> there is the early morning start in the parking lot. thousands of bikers gather for the run. some like former alaska governor, sarah palin, become a sernt of attention. but most come to draw attention to their cause. first and foremost, the rolling thunder run is a demonstration in the name of the killed and missing in action. there are spots along the route where some of the same people gather year of a year. here along constitution, there's a prime view, shade and reflection. especially among those from the vietnam war. former brothers in arms reunite and some reflect how things have changed. >> when we come back, they spit on it. and it's great to come out here to remember the guys who didn't make it. >> as you approach the wall, things become more somber. there is reverence among the names of those who didn't make it. >> there is a lot of names on that wall, people who gave everything. it is definitely a moving experience. >> on a hill east of the wall, another moving skpeer wednesday. the implements of war bring memories back. >> the old days. the old still pot, kavalar, the old can teen. >> a vigil for mia's and efforts to raisewareness and of a decades a group in massachusetts still keeps watch. >> it lasted about a year and we are of the last state, we have been doing this, this is the 28th year. >> the quiet moments of reflection, then the thunder rolls. roaring engines, some not so subtle reminders of why they do this year of a year. down here a lot during the -- and pay my respects to all veterans. >> this year, they are expecting about 400,000 bikers to take part in this event. it takes about an hour for them to get past any given point along the route. next year they expect even more. in northwest, derrek ward news 4. >> the gates opened up about an hour ago, here is a live look, actor forest whitaker and colin powell will be among those in attendance. if you are staying home, the concert will air live tonight on pbs. someone torched an administrator car in prince george county. it happened on laurel. officials say a car that belong to an administrator was destroyed. the car was sitting in his drive way when it was set on fire. police are pretty sure it is arson and there is evidence that those who did it tried to set another car on fire that was also sitting in the drive way. two people are out of a home tonight. a fire ripped through their home. it took about 65 fire fighters to get the flames under control at the house along wilson avenue in rockville. that fire broke out about 1:15 this afternoon. a neighbor tells us she heard an explosion. fortunately no one was hurt. still ahead tonight, a d.c. man who vanished has been found, but his disappearens may remain a mystery. we will talk about that. the crew aboard the space shuttle endeavour is on their way home. >> the d.c. youth minister who went missing last tuesday is alive and well. 26-year-old matt hill was found early this morning in asheville, north carolina. investigators say he left on his own free will. about 150 people searched d.c. parks, waterways and neighborhoods. about $4500 was donated to help find him. at this point, it is not clear yet what will happen to that money. we also have not heard why matt hill disappeared. still ahead tonight, things are starting to heat up around here. we make the time to celebrate birthdays and anniversaries. but what we should also be celebrating, are the moments. the crew said good-bye to the international space station today. the crew closed the hatch and will separate tonight. it is the last such mission for endeavour. the shuttle is expected to land wednesday at kennedy space center then it heads to los angeles where it will live at the california science center an museum. our kids will be able to go and see the shuttle and we can say, we remember when the shuttle was in the air. >> that's right. >> it is going to be hot. >> it is. that's the big weather story as we head through the rest of the holiday weekend. heat and humidity and heat advisory that will be in effect starting tomorrow afternoon and going right through tuesday. there is talk at weather service they might extend this into wednesday. all right? this is going to be the first shot of really hot air that we have had so far this season. you're not going to be used to the hot conditions. so take a easy tomorrow. stay hydrated. wear the light weight clothing and keep the pets inside. there it is. all those counties shaded in orange. from the blue ridge mountain points east to chesapeake bay. we are at 82 right now. 88 in frederick. this is what it feels like when we factor in the humidity. this is just to start getting you acclimated to the idea of it feeling like 100 tomorrow. actual highs will be in middle 90s from st. mary's city up to martin'sburg, west virginia. our storm track delivers us cooler weather on the storms but not now, it is getting push need canada and is dragging up this humidity from the gulf of mexico, steam and heat and that's why it is so hot and 125e78y here. our weather means the storm track diverges around us. we have a big speed bump in the atmosphere taking rain and thunderstorms to the north. instead we get dry weather and heat which is perfect if you have a pool to cool off in tomorrow and i hope you enjoy it. it is going to feel so refreshing when you jump in. let's extend the forecast. hot weather staying right through wednesday. wednesday is our shot at getting showers and thunderstorms. and if we're lucky we will have a few left over showers come thursday morning. of that we will cool off just not as cool as what we'd like 500 winner. hildebrandt is distraught. wheldon didn't have a full-time ride, winning his second indy 500. mir land women in a title game against northwestern in their 11th championship. got to love
