gallons, as we noted, lost. here is some perspecve on that. that's 800 million 8-ounce glass of water. a normal size bathtub, holds 50 gallons. a pool would hold about 1 million gallons. the water health department, along with the wssc has issued an alert. it's called a boil water alert, and will remain i had effect for the next 72 hours. this resurant issing boiling water to wash dishes, pots family catholic school in hillcrest heits closed for the day, because it had no water. the same was true for bishop mcnamara high school in forestville, which cancelled all asses and eveninactivities. the most visible impactf the water main break was in the parking lot of central hamon business park, where the asphalt was torn up, and vehleshrown abou to ge you an idea of the force of this water main break, take a look at this tru and this car, which is upside down. and th acrs the parking lot that station wagons on its roof. the owner is a security guard re, and told me h got off wo at midnight, left his car parked right here, and the explosion threw it across the rking lot. >> my car was sitting on top of the --n the top o the drain when it blew, so i guess that's how got re. businesses in the park suffered serious water damage. >> this devastating and heartbreaking. and i've bee here on this property for 12 years. and i never expected anything or seen any damage quite so was back in 2008 in montgomerycounty. th december, a 66-inch main broke on river road. rember that? it took nearly six hours before crews could stop the water flowg. 35 million gallons of water was lost in that case. our frigid temperatures cause ny of the water mn breaks. doug kmerer is here. how cold was it out there this rning? >> frigid this morning. some of the coldest temperatures we have seen in a number of yes. many locations wakingp to the single digits. sterling waking up to a mperature of 6 degrees. mainsburg, 4 degrees. manassas cam in at 5 this morning. and towards annapolis, 16 degrees. a very cold morning. temperatures right w, 29. we struggleded to reach 30 grees during the day today. and right now, just about everybody is in e upper 20s to lower 30s. and that's prey much where we're goin to stay. the go news is, we're going to be about 10 to 15 deges warmer overnit tonight. and again tomorrow. satellite and rad showing one storm system makg its way toward . it's not going to have a direct imct on us, but our temperatures go way up as a sult. it's also going to ve a big impact on our next storm system. i'll break it down for you, coming up. cold weather also caused problems for metro today. crews found some cracks in the rails ne the red line rockville station and near the van dorn station the blue line. a spokesperson said cold weather can lead tocracks, because the steel contracts. they say also tha inadequate maintenance also contributed to the prlem. riders on the red line had to share a single rail, and that caus some district significantdelays. morng. average high today 33 degrees. so the average high is starting to go up. maybthere is good news, too. 29 degrees, the current temperature, dew point of 15. dry atmosphere out there. wind chill of 21 degrs. wind chills stil a little bit of factor right now. anyime you're at 26 in hagerstownr 28 in massas, any wind will help to make it that much colder. 19 in sterling, 19 in nassas, 26 in fredcksburg, and annapolis at 19 degre as well. sn on the radar, most off toward the west front royal right along 81, and maybe even some in the northern maryland around parts of carol county, even in howard unty, a couple light flurries. but the atmosphere is just s dry. most of this is probably not making its way towards the realm. but it is part of a clipper system and this has aot of cold air associated with it. that's why it's all ow. buany time these go to our north like this one is going to be doing, they bring in warmer air. as a matter of fact, look at the warmer air to our south and we. 44 right n back tthe west. knoxville comg in at 46 degreesnd the warm air making its way here tomorrow. tomoow we have a very warm day. and then we have to watch out for what happens during the day on wednesday. first off, here'she area o highpressure. this has been the arctic area of high pressure. if this w to stay in place, we would be talking about the potential fo a monster snowstorm coming up on wednesday. that i not going to be the case. that's therea ofigh pressure, sliding south and east, allowing mild air to move in i place during t day tomorrow. highs tomorrow, 10 to 15 degrees above where they were today. i actlly think tomorrow a pret nice day. but setting the stage still for our next stor and even wednesday about 7:30 in the morning, we still have mild air around re. most areas, i think, m actually start outith rain from this storm system. but the storm making its way up the coast and right now still o early to call exactly wt wear going to be tting, becae the shift of 50 miles, even 20 miles, has a big bearing on what we're going to see here. whether it'ssnow, whether it's rain, whether it's freezing rain or sleet, there will cold air on the back si. so i think just about everybody will end as snow. but how much, that's still up in the ai right now. so here's my early call for wednesday. mostly sno this is the area whe you see the best snow chance. winchester, i-81, really off to the west, maybe louden county, frederick coun, as well. i-95orridor south a east, mostly rain and then changing over to snow late ithe storm, maybe some light accumulation here. but'm not expecting too much. but we're goingo have to wait and see, because thi forecast could be changing over the next 24 to 48 hours. partly cloudy this evening, continued cold. 24 to 27 degrees. light wis, but even a light wind gives us that wind chill. tomoow morning, 19 to 25. that is 10 to 15egrees warmer than we were this morning, but it still below average. and wind chills will sti be between and 15. so really, one more cold morni before we s a nice afteron tomorrow. much warmer. doesn't that just look great? 42 to 46 degrees. who would have thunk you would be thinking that in the middle ofanuary that 46 looks fantastic? because we go back to 38 on wednesday. thursday, a hh of 39. we will have to watch the storm wednesday night into thursday, especially, to see if it's going to create any problems. right no i'm thinking less of a storm as far as impact goes. >> is it too soon to a about a time frame, when wednesday? >> definitely going to move in
