terminal was evacuated about 12:30 this afternoon. the bags contained bedding materials, they were not hazardous. the airport passenger terminals were not evacuated. the security scare like the one in boston has the tsa on high alert during this holiday travel season. and on the eve of one of the busiest travel days of the year, a new poll shows about half of americans believe that airport patdowns go too far. julie carey right now is at national airport with more. >> reporter: indeed tomorrow is the busiest travel day both at reagan national and dallas, about 140,000 people expected to fly in and out. the big question tomorrow is, will an internet campaign to boycott the full body scanners cause disruptions. the ts is ting steps to avoid backups. nbc news reports that fewer passengers will be randomly select for the patdowns. all the travelers we spoke with toy say they've had smooth security experiences. >> as the thanksgiving family reunions begin, airport security checks are one more prison with all but 40 years suspended. chris gordon has more on the story from the courthouse in rockville, chris? >> reporter: alante saunders spoke in court today and offered condolences to the family of brian betz. his lawyer says he's an intelligent articulate young man who made some bad choices. nine people gave victim pact statements, family and friends of brian betz talked about his tragic loss. one of them said it's too bad saunders hadn't met betz earlier, because betz helped so many people over the years turn their livesaround. brian betz family came to court led by nationally known attorney gloria allred. betz' mother, father and sister choked back tears in court as they spoke of the tragedy of his loss. >> my world crumbled around me. in an instan a part of my life was gone. and i knew i would never be complete again. >> i feel cheated not being able to tell my sonow much i loved him and respected him. >> reporter: he was murdered in ril after meeting saunders on a sex chat line and inviting him over. saunders brought three friends and a gun. betz was fnd shot on his bedroom floor. saunders apologized saying the shooting was truly an aident that drugs are a powerful force. >> there were some drugs involved, and they were perpetrating a robbery in order to affect their abity to get more drugs. >> reporter: gloria allred came here from los angeles saying she was hired by the betz family because victims don't get as many rights as their killers. she will ask the department of justice to invest gate the killing of brian betz as a hate crime. >> brian betz was gay, and the matthew shepherd hate crimes act was passed to provide greater protections for victims of hate crimes who may be targeted on account of the fact that they are either gay or perived to be gay. >> reporter: states attorney john mccarthy, the chief county prosecutor disagrees. >> if there had been evidence of a ha crime, we would have charged it. >> now, three other young men also face charges in connection with the death of brian betz, one of themtoday, shareef lancaster pleaded guilty to robbery with a handgun. he could face 35 years when he's sentencehere in degrees across the region, we started with sunshine earli this morning, then we saw cloud cover move in. the temperatures stayed nice and warm, high of 69 at the airport. look at this, the record for today is 75 disagrees. we were six degrees shy of a record today, and that came with a lot of cloud cover. that tells you something's really going on. we have a lot of warm air moving into the area, at 6:00, it's 65 degrees, a nice evening outside. the winds are beginning to shift west-northwest at 8 miles an hour, so that normal component will start to take over and we'll stt to see temperatures cooldown over night. 59 in hagerstown, 60 in sterling, culpepper coming in at 63. charlottesville still nice and warm at 66 degrees. we had shower activity move through with that frontal boundary. the showers now down into the delmarva, they will continue to move off to the south and east. we're done with the rain, we told you yesterday, just a slight chance of a shower. you may need the umbrella for 10, 15 minutes, that was about it. behind this system, much colder air. look back to the west, we're talking43 in columbus, 42 in cincinnati. the cooler air is going to try to make its way toward the area. here the frontal boundary with the light showers that moved on through. behind it, we're going to see clearing skies. that's going to allow temperatures to it cool down. it's not going to be nearly as cool here as it was to the west. 30 in omaha, 30 as well in chicago. an arctic cooldown for us. we're going to see a little chill in the air tomorrow. chilly behind this frontal boundary, there goes the front to the east. we'll see more of a northerly component tomorrow. that means very chilly during the afternoon. temperatures a little below erage, and about 10 to 15 degrees cooler than whe we weretoday. this could get tricky,s a warm front moves in as we're sitting at some of the coolest temperatures we're going to be seeing before we see milder air move in for theday. most of the day will be dry, that's the good news, here's the potential fly in the ointment, possible icy spots, this is thanksgiving morning. if you're driving out 70 or 81. that could be a problem area. this is an early luke, make sure you tune in tomorrow to find out what we' thinking, also, shower activity around the region. this is not going to be a rainstorm, just some showers and most likely this will be early then the rain will move out of here, we'll see a dry day for thanksgiving, most of the day should be okay before a big storm moves in on thursday night. tomorrow morning, clear skies, a chilly start, a bit breezy. a lot cooler than we were today, winds out of the northwest at 10 to 15. that will put windchills in the 20s for many locations, even around the 30 degree mark in the city. mostly sunny, much cooler, a light breeze, 47 to 52 degrees. at least we'll see the sun. with winds of 10 to 15 it will feel like we're in the mid-40s across the region. a little better on thursday. high temperature around 55. 40% chance of showers. i think that will be early in the morning hours, we'll start to clear out, we'll dry out before the storm moves in late thursday night into friday. friday morning for black friday, i think will be the most problematic area. if youe thinking about camping out for some of the store sales, you may want to think again. it's going to be fairly nasty on friday morning i have a high of 54 degrees ere, i think the temperatures will be falling during the afternoon on friday into the 40s. friday afternoon very chilly. saturday and breezy. chilly weekend in store before our next storm moves in tuesday. the good news is,these types of storms, and we talked about the la nina pattern last night. that does not allow the coldest air to come into o region and that's what we're seeing this time. we may see our first freezing temperatures in the city coming up on saturday morning. >> it's going to start to feel more like thanks giving than it does >> when they steal from manna foodcenters, they're stealing from all our residents here. >> the people at manna say they've been seeing upwards of 300 people a day for the pt couple days. the theft of their van will not keep them from serving montgomery county's neediest families and individuals. police caught four suspects trying to steal electronics from a school until d.c. and they allegedly stole taxis to get there. it happened today at the fishing school on meade street northeast. the nonprofit facility offers after school tutoring. the alarm alerted police, the thieves did extensive damage to the building during the break-in. virginia governor bob mcdonald and members of the congressional delegation met today to discuss the plans t downsize the government facilities at hampton roads. the government is still committed to cutting the costs at the facility. however, mcdonnell said gatses agreed to let virginia representatives attend planning meetings to make sure the moves don't devastate the commonwealth. no promises wereade today, the governor described the meeting as productive. the days of just calling in an emergency are changing. >> the current 911 system is talking about. an accident like this one along the beltway in prince georges county can create backups for miles. and those taking 95 from d.c. to new york city for thanksgiving travel, the 95 corridor has bee named the most congested trel route in the nation. the outer loop of 495. for those planning to get away wednesday between noon and 8:00 p.m. consider yourself forewarned. >> not only is it a big getaway hour, it's also the time when most people lea their jobs to go home to celebrate thanksgiving. those people who are not traveling, they're going to be out there doing their last minute shopping. that's going to be absolute gridlock, total congestion. bumper to bumper traffic. >> or you may just want to wait it out at home. if you wanteave by noon o wednesday, you may want to wait until after 11:00 at night or leave thankiving day. to make sure you have a smooth drive for that turkey dinner. metro hopes a new pilot program will end some crosswalk accident accidents. >> proven can block hiv infection. a government funded study finds truvada cut the infection rate by 44% among gay men who took the drug. if they took the drug every day, it cut the infection rate by 70%. some doctors are already me scribing it for preventive reasons. it costs about $1,000 a month. the study is published in the new england journal of medicine. some pharmacists say the nation is facing the worst shortage of prescription drugs in 30 years. any numb of factors are to blame. some manufacturer's have been unable to keep up with demand. there have been production delays and thanksgiving meals to more than 100 families. the program that helps at risk kids and families. mcnabb was born on thanksving day back in 1976. says that helping others spend the day makes him feel even more a part of the community. >> that's the joy that comes to my heart, the fact that you can help or aid in anyway for people to enjoy the day. and if it's single parent moms, kids who were adopted, you know, kids in foster homes, whatever it may be, to spend time with them, sit down and have a conversation with them, fd out their goals, what they want to do in life. and to provide a hot meal for them. knowing that on a special day like thanksgiving, they've been provided a meal where they can sit back like everyone else and enjoy the day. very cool, donovan making his stamp on the success. in the washingn area kept on giving even today. cadets from the metropolitan police department helped sort and assemble more thanksgiving food baskets. yesterday we asked for your help and boy did you deler. we collected more than 50,000 dollars in donations, and enough food to fill up -- completely fill up a tractor-traer. the redskins came through for the fans on sunday. even with all those injuries. but the giving wasn't over yet. today the team hosted their anal harvest feast to feed 3500 prince georges county families in need. >> thousands of princeeorges county residents lined
