evacuation near ground zero in new york city today. the bomb squad was called to the world financial center in lower manhattan before 11:00 after a security guard reported a suspicious package. the nypd determined the toy grenade was not dangerous and cleared the scene in 90 minutes. brookfield properties, which runs the building, ordered the evacuation as a precaution. a fragile cease fire appears to be holding in syria, but many opposition figures say the government is not living up to all the terms of the deal. overall the syrian military appears to have stopped the assault on rebels, pro-democracy activists and citizens, but witnesses say many towns are surrounded by troops and weaponry. opposition leaders say they do not trust the government and the real test of the cease fire will be whether peaceful protest is permitted. united nations envoy kofi annan is asking for speedy deployment to maintain the cease fire. metro is launching a new survey to help it plan for the critical and help the agency address growth needs. those tornados that tore through texas last week came with a very hefty price tag. state emergency management officials say the twisters cost public overnight temperatures will be low once again, there is the possibility of frost. we have frost advisories posted in all those counties in that blue, from hagerstown, gaithersburg, culpepper, far off to the west in the light blue, mainly west of i-81, a freeze warning. tomorrow morning, some spots, some neighborhoods when you wake up, there could be frost on the grass and on some of your sensitive plants. as far as cloud cover goes today, yeah, you noticed a partly cloudy sky here for the afternoon. puffy clouds coming in. even a sprinkle or two, we stand at 59 degrees, below average today, check this out. al alain robert climbed the qatar's largest building in 93 minutes and 47 seconds. he didn't have a safety rope or harness. the hotel is more than 1000 feet high. he believes he set a guiness world record for longest building climb without any safety devices. robert has scaled more than 85 giant structures across the globe. his actions are often illegal and they repeatedly landed a little less wind than the last couple days, but still gusting to 22 miles per hour, in frederick, maryland and between 15 and 20 miles per hour generally throughout most of the area. chilly, yes, average now, 65 degrees. today in the 50s. mid and upper 50s. got in the low 60s for some neighborhoods to the south and west. culpepper, fredericksburg, charlottesville, high pressure will climb, it will feel like march around here, in fact like june as we move through the weekend. 58 the temperature, reagan national airport, northwest wind at 12 miles per hour. you can see again kind of gray with the clouds around, but currently storm4 radar, no p precip falling. the moderately dry areas moving more in maryland, 53% now of the state of maryland looking at moderate drought conditions, 98% of maryland and 62% of virginia moderately dry. of course that up to the north, as we look ahead, folks, doesn't look like we'll get substantial rainfall, which isn't good with higher temperatures coming up. 56 in hagerstown, 62 in richmond, roanoke, 59 in new york city. you can see the spin, much of it off the coast. you can see the clouds there rotating through with our north and northwest wind. high pressure off to the west of us, so as that moves in tomorrow, probably not much wind at all. certainly a lot less, and more sunshine for tomorrow as that area of high pressure moves in. first we'll deal with the cool conditions during the overnight. a few again clouds around throughout the day tomorrow but it is going to be a very nice day tomorrow, and awfully good weekend. warmer air, with the warm front, on saturday we might pick up a few clouds, but i think any rain is going to stay well to the north of the area with the warm front. forecast for tomorrow morning, mostly clear, another chilly start, sun up at 6:35, 64 to 43 degrees. tomorrow, mostly sunny, fantastic friday, 64 to 70 degrees. a look at the four-day forecast, which includes the whole entire weekend. (man) register today for the... and receive $25 off your registration fee. because everyone deserves a lifetime. . from washington's leading news station, this is news4 at 4. welcome back to news4 at 4:00 i'm pat lawson muse. >> i'm jim handly. here is what is making news at 4:30. democrats and republicans battling for women's vote. the war of words got personal. cnn commentator hillary rosen slammed mitt romney for saying he gets economic advice from his wife, ann. a stay at home mother who raised five kids. rosen said ann romney, in her words, never worked a day in her life. the white house noted that rosen does not work for president obama or his campaign. george zimmerman made his first court appearance today in sanford, florida after being charged in the shooting death of 17-year-old trayvon martin. he's due back in court may 29th for arraignment when he will likely enter a plea. bond will be set at a later date. he will remain in protective custody until then. a building at the world financial center in new york city was evacuated as security guard reported a suspicious package at one of the buildings, which is very close to ground zero. the bomb squad was called in and police found a toy grenade. the scene was cleared in 90 minutes and people were allowed back inside the building. optimism about china's growth gave stocks a boost. the dow closed at 12,986. the nasdaq gained 39 and s & p 500 gained 18. police chase ended in a freeway shoot out in southern california. police chased the car ten minutes overnight when the driver stopped his car, perpendicular on a ten-lane high way. the driver jumped out, pointed something at the officers, they opened fire and killed the driver. the chase began while police were making a routine traffic stop. jury selection began today in the criminal trial against former presidential candidate john edwards. the 58-year-old is accused of taking nearly one million dollars in illegal campaign contributions to hide his pregnant mistress. >> edwards denied any wrongdoing in the case. brian mooar has the story. >> reporter: former democratic presidential candidate john edwards surrounded by cameras. it's a familiar scene, but extraordinary circumstances as he marched in a federal courthouse to begin jury selection in his federal criminal trial. >> do you think given the negative public opinion you can get a fair trial? >> i'm not going to say anything, thank you. >> reporter: edwards accused of illegally using nearly a million dollars in donation to quiet his pregnant mistress, rielle hunter, during his 2008 presidential run. the former senator and one-time trial attorney is charged with six counts including conspiracy, illegal use of campaign contributions, and making false statements. the charges could bring 30 years in prison and a million and a half dollars in fines. his late wife, elizabeth looms large over the case. >> i know the edwards trial team will be concerned about the fact that people really just can't get over the fact that he cheated on his wife while she had cancer and as she was dying. >> reporter: edwards admitted what he did wasz wrong but insists he did not break the law. his defense argued he used private donations, not campaign money, and that federal prosecutors are radically interpreting the law. >> the jury selection process is designed to find fair and impartial jurors, we're confident that will happen. >> reporter: public opinion seems to be stacked against the former politician. at a new survey shows 73% of a an unfavorable opinion of edwards. 57% already believe he's guilty. as a lawyer, john edwards made his name in courthouses like this one. but now the man who once hoped to live in the white house, is fighting to stay out of prison. in greensboro, north carolina, brian mooar, news4. it appears we haven't heard the last from harry potter author jk rowling. you can expect a new book to be released in the fall, this isn't for the young. she says a novel for adults. called "the casual vacancy" the publisher is the little brown book club. it will be group, rather, it will be published in hard book, e-book and audio version. it examines politics in a town that is not what it seems. it describes as darkly comic, thought-provoking and constantly surprising. release is september 27th. actress ashley judd is outraged against hatred of women. recent pictures showed her with a puffy face. gossip blogs speculated the actress had plastic surgery. she hit back on "the today show." she slammed critics for criticizing her looks. >> i think it's hatred of women that invites criticism. the objectification of girls and women and hyper sexualization that invites criticism, doesn't have anything to do with me, really and how i look. >> judd blames the puffy face on prescription steroids to clear up her sinuses. there are reports that prince harry has a new girlfriend. british tabloids report she is 24-year-old molly king, she is part of the british girl band called "the saturdays" they are not well-known here in the u.s. but after world wide media exposure that will likely change. they met a couple years ago at a polo match and spotted last week at at a karaoke club. harry is smitten with king, reporters say. >> pretty entertaining. coming up on news4 at 4 this afternoon. "the scream" is on display. the 1885 painting is the only privately-owned copy of the art work. this is one of the only four versions created by him. a businessman whose father was a friend is selling it. it is one of the most recognizable images in the world. we are -- we're not screaming about the weather. will be getting nice. >> yes, getting nice, warming up, but i'm kind of concerned with the fact we haven't had great rainfall around here in the last time we had over a half inch in late february. we had a couple red flag warning days, where the brush fire threat was high. with warmer temperatures, the low humidity, lack of rainfall, i think that is only going to worsen, you know, by the time we get in the early part of next week. i want to take you through the temperatures, too, big warm-up we're talking about will start feeling like march, then june by the weekend. our temperatures for tomorrow, here is a look at friday. you can see the title bar there, rising in the mid and upper 60s in d.c., new york city, 66, close to 70 in raleigh, north carolina. notice the real warmth down here, jackson, mississippi, close to 90 degrees, we'll get in the mid-80s for saturday and sunday, too, temperatures will continue to rise. so sunday as well as monday i think we will be getting in the low and mid 80s throughout the area. that is much of the eastern portion of the country. getting that warmth. and again, lack of rainfall, brush fire threat could be high. so, some folks asked me yesterday, what does that mean we should do when the brush fire threat is high?
