and i believe that. and i believe justice will be served. >> the mother of trayvon martin speaks before a crowd of thousands. a call for criminal charges in the killing of the unarmed teen. good evening. i'm chris gordon. martin's mother was at a rally in miami tonight. she was joined by al sharpton, jesse jackson and florida congresswoman fredricka wilson. there were additional rallies around the country, including one in alexandria, virginia. news 4's darcy spencer reports. >> reporter: outside city hall in alexandria, dozens gather fair justice for trayvon martin vigil and a moment of silence in memory of the teen who was gunned down in sanford, florida, in february. >> tell us about why you came out to the vigil this evening. >> because i have three sons. six grandsons and three great-grandsons. and any one of them could have been a trayvon. >> it means a lot to me because i'm black. and sometimes you get scared because you think there's other people like that out there. >> reporter: the 17-year-old was shot and killed by george zimmerman, a neighborhood watch captain. zimmerman says he shot the teen in self-defense, but the shooting has sparked angry calls for his arrest. >> when we see the kind of situation that occurred in sanford, it really tears at everybody's soul. we do not want to see a child gunned down and then nothing essentially being done about it. >> reporter: many at the vigil wore hoodies in honor of the teen. he was wearing a hoody and carrying a bag of skittles and an iced tea when he was gunned down. >> it's about our judicial system being the rights of the judicial system being employed in a fair way. >> if justice is really blind, it should not matter what his race was. what his gender was. how old he was. how young he was. >> reporter: zimmerman's attorney says trayvon martin attacked him. he suffered a broken nose and a head injury. but many have cast doubt on his story. >> i feel for the family, and i'm with the family. and i just hope that justice will be done. >> reporter: rallies like this one have been held across the country. people calling for the arrest of george zimmerman. a grand jury in sanford, florida, will begin hearing evidence in this case later this month. in alexand riadarcy spencer, news 4. it has been a violent weekend in prince george's county. eight people shot since friday. three people killed in separate incidents. the latest shooting happened around 8:30 this morning. police say it began with a dispute in a house on judith avenue in district heights. two men were shot. one of them died. the other is expected to be okay. prince george's county police say they'll have a news conference tomorrow to address this weekend's violence. seven d.c. taxi drivers are accused of attacking passengers in recent weeks. the chairman of the taxicab commission says a crackdown is now under way. some cab drivers have been arrested as part of the investigation. taxi commission chair ron litton says he wants to have them removed as taxi drivers if they are convicted assault charges. >> reporter: first we want to make clear that none of these taxicabs are involved in the complaints. a warning has been issued to female taxicab passengers to be careful after seven violent confrontations between cab drivers and their passengers. six of the seven victims have been women. one was allegedly dragged out of a cab by her ankles. another was allegedly punched. some women we spoke with who rely on taxis are concerned. >> it's a youthful city. so someone as a grad student as georgetown who lives on my own here, i don't have many family members and rely heavily on public transportation and taxis, this is like so worrisome to me. >> reporter: legislation is being proposed to install panic buttons in all d.c. cabs to alert police when there's a problem. >> drivers have been robbed. drivers have been assaulted. and also for passengers because this is wholly unacceptable, obviously, but on occasion we do have drivers who actually assault passengers. and the primary victim is a woman. >> reporter: most women passengers we spoke with welcome the idea of a panic button. >> i would only go in a cab right now with my husband. i wouldn't go by myself. or i'd never go alone. i'd only go with a friend or other people unless they have this panic button. >> reporter: some cab drivers who have been robbed think that installing a panic button that alerts police is a good idea. >> it's good. it's important to. yeah. >> reporter: the panic buttons are expected to be installed in d.c. cabs by december. turning now to the weather. some of us have seen rain tonight. how long will it last? meteorologist chuck bell is in storm center 4. chuck? >> good evening, chris. good evening, everybody. as advertised, the light rain showers have moved into the area. primarily after sun down this evening. and the good news is i think most will be out of here before your monday morning commute back to work and school. temperatures remain on the mild side right now. mid to upper 50s around town. mid-60s in the mountains of west virginia. plenty of light to at times moderate rain moving south into the area coming down out of pennsylvania. the back end of the rain is already pulling through pittsburgh, pennsylvania, and as a result, i have a great amount of confidence that we will not have to worry about anything in the way of a sloppy morning commute. showers racing south. rain gone by the morning rush. cool monday breezes. but with sunshine. what about the rest of the week ahead? i'll give you that in the seven-day coming up, chris. >> thanks, chuck. former president bill clinton took his global initiative through the streets of d.c. today. he and his daughter chelsea joined a group of college students in sprucing up a northeast neighborhood. looking for strangers in need, they did yard work, house mate nance and anything else they could. the global initiative challenges students to find new approaches to improving the community. >> any nation is only as strong as its people and its neighborhoods on its streets and its schools from the grass roots up. >> it's terrific. both for the students who come from more than 300 colleges who really are here motivated by service that they are already doing. >> chelsea clinton is an nbc news special correspondent. now over the years, the event has brought in millions of dollars in commitments for global initiatives. it's do or die for any gop candidate not named mitt romney this week. primaries are being held in maryland, d.c. and wisconsin on tuesday. newt gingrich will speak in maryland at the frederick motor company tomorrow morning and then head to hood college in the afternoon. and while wisconsin could ice the nomination for mitt romney, no candidate is bowing out of the race. brian mooar reports. >> reporter: mitt romney is hoping a win in wisconsin's primary will bring an end to his rough road to the nomination. >> and on tuesday, we're going to pick the next president of the united states. >> reporter: house budget committee chairman paul ryan is endorsing romney. so is freshman tea party senator ron johnson. >> i totally believe he is committed to saving america. >> reporter: and with the republican establishment and prominent tea party members lining up behind him, romney is looking ahead. >> this is an election about what america is going to be. >> reporter: romney has a commanding lead in delegates and rick santorum is clearly tired of hearing about it. >> if romney gets the 1144 delegates before -- >> i'm not talking about this anymore. we're just focused on doing well here in wisconsin. >> reporter: santorum is shrugging off romney's endorsements and laughing off talk that romney is about to lock up the nomination. >> i'm encouraged by all of this. i think it shows that the establishment is getting nervous. >> reporter: but santorum has reason to be concerned too. tuesday is his last chance to win a big prize in the midwest before the gop race heads to his home state of pennsylvania. brian mooar, nbc news, washington. mitt romney got a big april fools' joke from his campaign staff in milwaukee today. he was getting ready to give a speech at a campaign event. wisconsin congressman paul ryan went out and introduced romney and, well, here's what happened. >> ron johnson and governor mitt romney, the next president of the united states. >> later the republican presidential candidate told the real crowd about the joke. romney says he forgives his staff but he'll remember it for the future. still ahead tonight -- riots at the university of kentucky after its big win over louisville. how police are trying to stop it from happening again tomorrow. your cell phone is wireless, so why do you plug it in to charge it? towson university will remember two students who died within hours of each other. ryan bailey and 27-year-old timothy coyer. bailey was hit by a car near washington avenue and york road early saturday morning. coyer, an iraq war veteran, was found dead in his apartment yesterday by his roommates. investigators say he died of cardiac arrest but the exact cause of his death still has not been determined. several hundred police will be on hand at the university of kentucky for tomorrow's ncaa championship basketball game. they are hoping to prevent the rioting like this that you see. it happened last night near the campus. students took to the streets after beating louisville in the semifinals. cars were overturned and more than 50 fires were set. some kentucky players are taking to twitter to tell fans to behave. okay. this will make you either feel really bad if you are one of the three lucky mega millions winners or maybe a little bit better if you weren't lucky enough to win like most of us. it turns out that $640 million really isn't all it's cracked up to be. here's a little lesson in subtra subtraction. you're splitting the pot three ways. $640 million. so your share is $150 million apiece. well, of course, then you have federal and state taxes. chop off another $50 million. that leaves you with $100 million. still, pretty good. i will grant you. you you will go bankrupt if you splurge and try to buy certain things that everybody dreamed about when they were buying the lottery tickets. a gulf jet will cost you $64 million. plus pilot and storage fees and maintenance. a private island to fly that jet to, $25 million. even if you won the entire jackpot, you would only have about $300 million left. now it turns out that's a salary of $7 million a year. sounds pretty good, but if you were hoping to be one of the 40 richest americans, think again. number 40 on that list takes in more than $1 billion a year. so if you think about it, you're left with small change. well, most of us can't go anywhere without our cell phones or electronic devices. but their convenience is limited by one thing. a cord. they all have to be plugged in quite often to keep running. now that could soon change. a california microchip company has come up with a wireless charging device. you just drop your phone on top of it and it gives you juice much faster than a plug. >> the idea would be these coils are charging surfaces would be built into public areas for waiting rooms, fast food restaurants, hotels. that sort of thing. >> the chip company idt hopes to start selling the wireless chargers to the public by the year 2014. well, political junkies and movie buffs alike got a unique chance to be seen in a new tv series from netflix. central casting held an open casting call in southeast for extra in the original series "house of cards." the movie will be shooting in baltimore and the district. the much-anticipated political thriller starring kevin spacey explores the british political scene toward the end of the margaret thatcher era. people we talked to today say they're excited for the chance to be part of the series. >> it's fun. you get to meet interesting people. you get to see yourself in the movies. sometimes. sometimes not. >> house of cards is the first originally produced series by netflix. they are scheduled to begin shooting in april. >> they couldn't find a nicer place to shoot it than right around here. beautiful stuff. >> and now tonight, some people got more rain than others. >> yes, but nobody got a whole lot of rain. there's been no concern whatsoever for any kind of flash flooding or severe weather. that's welcome news. and most everybody if you saw the rain, about 0.1 inch of rain. some of the lucky winners have had almost a quarter of an inch of rain. just enough, we hope to get the pollen count back down to within a manageable range in time for your monday morning commute. but with more dry weather than wet weather ahead this week, expect the pollen count to be fierce once again as we get towards the middle and later half of the upcoming work and schoolweek. outside, it is cloudy. there is still a little bit of light rain coming down at national airport. but it's a mild one. 58 degrees with the drizzle out there right now. dew points in the mid to upper 40s. if it were raining harder, the temperature and the dew point would be closer together. that's an indication of the fact it's light rain that's out there right now. barely a breeze out there right now. winds generally out of the east and southeast at less than 5 miles per hour. temperatures are mild. mid to upper 50s right now. high temperatures tomorrow, probably not more than a couple degrees warmer than that as behind the cold front, cooler air starts to move in. here's your monday planner. partly to mostly cloudy. temperatures in the 40s first thing in the morning. we'll quickly go over to a bright, full, mostly sunny part of the day. temperatures up to 60 degrees by after lunch nm and then holding in the upper 50s and low 60s for much of the afternoon. thanks to a north breeze tomorrow. north winds 10 to 20 miles per hour or higher for much of the afternoon. so a breezy monday afternoon coming our way. here's storm 4 radar. most of the moderate light to moderate rain now, fairfax county, loudoun, northern fauquier county. they're drifting southbound. it's going to be kind of wet for the next couple of hours. interstate 66, 95, the capital beltway all getting in on the light rain for now. these showers are pushing southbound. so you folks in fredericks burg where it hasn't rained yet. there are light rain showers coming your way fairly shortly. the back end of the rain is starting to show up near southwestern pennsylvania. so the little bit of rain we have to go through here on average, 0.1 to 0.25 inch of rain. cool dry air up to our north and west. that's what we get to enjoy for tomorrow afternoon. and a chilly start coming up on tuesday morning. umbrellas at the ready if you are going out for late night drives. by early morning, back to work and school. dry weather for the monday morning commute. monday is looking like a beautiful day. plenty of sunshine. but again, that north wind will make it feel on the chilly side. especially if you are in the shade. then high pressure settles on in. a very cool to almost cold start on tuesday morning. but tuesday afternoon, bright sunshine returns and that puts temperatures back near 70. so overnight tonight, showers ending before sunrise. otherwise, chilly. start off temperatures in the 40s. tomorrow afternoon, bright and sunny. but breezy. highs tomorrow, upper 50s and low 60s. a look down the road through the week ahead. tomorrow the breeziest and probably one of the cooler days of the week. tuesday looks great. wednesday, a chance of a sprinkle or two first thing in the morning ahead of the next cool front which brings in chillier air for thursday, friday. all is right with the world. sunny and back near 70 again. >> it feels like it's been an extended spring. >> we missed winter entirely. >> dodged that
