who knew him got out and spoke to the crowd and described a man who worked hard, saved his money to pay his way through college and was frugal and drove a bike around to get around the city. well, tragically it was on that bike where he took his last breaths. and now those who knew him and many who showed up tonight who did it say it is gun violence plaguing d.c. that has to end. >> the man was the sweetest person you could have ever met. >> reporter: an emotional night as hundreds lit candles in memory of the 31-year-old. he was gunned down here in sherman circle sunday around 12:30 in the morning in what police believe was an attempted robbery. >> we are people who grieve. we are people who do not know why things of this magnitude happen. >> reporter: at the time he was riding his bike home from phillip's restaurant on the waterfront where he worked for the past seven years. he was also an on again, off again student but friends say he recently saved up enough money to return to school and finish his biology degree. >> he taught me not to judge anybody. a person you would love. anybody would love him. >> reporter: jeremy like many others who showed up wednesday night did not know him, but he says he's here because this senseless act of violence could have happened to anyone. >> you know, a couple hours' difference, it could have been my friends gathering here this evening as opposed to neil's. it is a scary situation. >> reporter: police were also on hand giving out these reward posters because the person that did this is still out there on the run. neighbors are hoping the killer will soon be caught and the gun violence in d.c. comes to an end. >> you have a neighbor. you have somebody that you love. you know somebody right now that has been shot down for no reason at all. and i have seen three or four of them. it's not worth it. >> reporter: well, his closest friends couldn't be here at the vigil because tonight they are in his hometown of noah, connecticut, attending his wake. we have learned that he will be buried there in his hometown tomorrow. and doreen, this whole situation, if it isn't sad enough, we've learned in just three days his sister is going to be married. reporting live in sherman circle northwest, john shriffen, back to you in the studio. >> thank you, john. there was also a vigil in fairfax tonight to remember a teenager who was killed while cutting a tree branch last night. gregory moulson is his name. he was remembered tonight for his generosity and his willingness to help neighbors. moulson was killed after a current went through him when a tree branch he cut hit a power line. he was 17 years old and about to start his senior year at fairfax high school. three firefighters were injured when part of a ceiling collapsed on them. it happened in rockville, maryland, tonight. they put the fire out and then were cleaning up when the ceiling fell in. we're told the injured firefighters had only minor injuries. they were taken to the hospital. the white house announced today president obama will address the nation from the oval office next tuesday as he marks the end of combat operations in iraq. after nine years, american troops started the massive pullout earlier this month. when the president speaks iraq's security will be back in that country's hands. and a new wave of violence targeting iraqi police and soldiers happened today. and it foreshadows the challenges ahead. coordinated bombings took place in more than a dozen cities. a number of primaries last night. results are in now. and they are reverberating all over the country. election officials are still counting up the votes in alaska that republican senator lisa mccluskey could lose to joe miller. miller is backed by sarah palin, and he went against the status quo. in arizona, the son of former vice president dan quayle won his first race for congress. senator john mccain also won in arizona. in florida, republican rick scott, a millionaire, a newcomer. he won the gop primary for the governor's office. five years ago tonight, hurricane katrina made its first landfall in the u.s. roaring through florida before turning for the gulf coast. tomorrow nbc nightly news begins reporting from new orleans ahead of the five-year anniversary. over the next several days there will be many stories from people rescued and people who fled. we begin our own coverage with a woman who struck many of us after arriving in the washington area. craig melvin has her story. >> reporter: doreen, there are tens of thousands that katrina forced to flee, but mildred's story is different. today she lived in a retirement home here in northwest. we first met her several years ago full of spunk, full of spirit. and as you'll see, that has not changed. neither has her affection for new orleans. we first met mildred on hurricane katrina's two-year anniversary. her recollection of how she managed to get from her fifth floor apartment to safety in the seventh ward has stayed with us. >> and the people say come on down. come on down. i said no. you're not bob barker, and this is not "the price is right." >> reporter: today an 86 years young, she's just as funny and fiery and remembers that hurricane just as vividly. >> it was disturbing. because that's the only time i left home because i had to leave. i was willing to stay and help other people. they said no, you've got to get out of there. get out. and they took us to the superdome. and it became overcrowded. so they drove us to the astrodome. and from there my niece came down here and got me and other family members. >> reporter: her family returned but her niece thought staying in d.c. was best for her aunt because she was getting older and didn't have much family to look after her in new orleans. >> so i stayed, cried, but -- >> reporter: mildred alfred says the tears are for two things, the city is he still misses -- >> the best thing that i like, red beans, no rice, red beans with mayonnaise in them. that's my favorite dish. >> reporter: and the thought of what might have happened had she not gone on down. >> then i'd be talking to god. >> reporter: instead now the former writer and dancer spends a lot of her time on a different form of art. with each stroke, a tribute and a memory. >> it's usually when i do a painting or drawing, i'll put the colors, you know, the purple, green, red. >> reporter: alfred has only been back to new orleans once. she says she went back two years ago. she also said at least in the seventh ward where she once lived, things look better than she thought they would. tonight alfred also told me she does not think about the hurricane or its aftermath nearly as much as she used to. back to you guys. >> we're glad she's doing remember that guy? that baltimore police officer was fired today. in 2007, officer salvatore rifirif y rifi rifiera put a teen skateboarder in a headlock. he was recommended a suspension for the 19-year veteran. the baltimore police commissioner overruled that decision and terminated him. metro police are picking up their after-school patrols. they want to keep an eye on students and try to keep things safe during the ride home. the officers were out in force this afternoon at the van ness metro rail station. metro says in addition to patrolling the rails, all students will be told to keep moving through the system, no loitering, and they want to maintain appropriate behavior. there have been two high-profile fights at metro stops in recent months. all of them involving teens. metro will try again to put that peak of the peak surcharge in effect. the transit agency announced today that the morning rush hour surcharge will go into effect this sunday. a 20 cent charge will be added to all weekday trips that begin between 7:30 and 9:00 a.m. the surcharge which is supposed to take effect earlier this month, but new software caused problems with fare gates and the smart trip card. governor bob mcdonald's plan to privatize all of virginia's abc stores is getting a tough fight. he's trying to sell his plan across the commonwealth. there was one tonight in herndon, virginia. both democrats and conservatives have been speaking out against the plan. some are worried that privatizing would triple the number of liquor stores. if it's approved, mcdonald plans to use the proceeds towards transportation improvements. still to come on news 4, a new challenge for those trapped miners in chile. it has nothing that has something to do with their waist size. medicare officials are on the defensive after a new analysis found millions of seniors may have to switch prescription plans. and our new chief mete heavy equipment that will be used to free 33 men from an underground men arrived in chile today. extraordinary efforts are being made to keep the trapped miners comfortable. they're now getting regular delivery of supplies along with messages of love and support from family members. rescuers are trying to establish routines that include entertainment and exercise. the men will have to have a waist size of just 35 inches to squeeze through the escape tunnel which may not be finished till christmas. more than 3 million americans may be forced to change their medicare drug plans next year. medicare is working to consolidate options to make it simpler for seniors to select their coverage plan. that's the finding of some private researchers who have been studying the government's new plan. medicare officials have dismissed the new research. they call it simply guessing. the number of plans will narrow by ten in each state. seniors will not lose coverage. but about one in five of them could see changes in premiums or co-payments. tiger woods's ex-wife is speaking out for the first time about their relationship and the knit he crashed his car. elin nordegren tells "people" she and woods weren't arguing the night of the car crash that led to the revelations of woods's extramarital affairs. she also says she learned of those affairs as many of us did, through tabloid headlines in the weeks that followed the crash. nordegren told "people" magazine, quote, i felt stupid as more things were revealed. how could i not have known anything? the word "betrayal" isn't strong enough. i felt like my whole world had fallen apart. turning winds out of the south-southwest at nine. tomorrow's forecast, 68 at 6:00 a.m. looking at a nice morning. i think we'll see plenty of sunshine. 76 by 10:00 a.m. then by around 2:00, we'll start to see some cloud cover move back into the picture. same deal for 6:00. temperatures move to about 82-degree mark. all in all, looking at a pretty nice day tomorrow. and i think a pretty nice stretch of weather. live doppler right now, no problems as far as that's concerned. satellite and radar showing that area of disturbed weather, that upper-level disturbance that's brought us all the clouds over the past couple days, that will continue to move off into the atlantic. it's going to usher in high pressure behind it giving us perfect weather toward the end of the workweek. 75 now in d.c. roanoke at 72. no real hot or cool weather. just seasonal weather over the next couple days. and again, looking good as we head to the weekend. tropical satellite showing two systems. we have hurricane danielle and tropical storm earl. both strengthening. danielle right now becoming a very strong storm. category 2 storm right now with winds of 100. earl, winds of 40. danielle, if you have interest in bermuda and a lot of people taking cruises to bermuda this time of year could be very close to bermuda come saturday and into the day on sunday. and it could also cause a lot of surf problems here over towards maybe ocean city over the weekend. so watch out for that as well. as far as our weather is concerned as we move on back into the picture, once again, beautiful weather over the next few days. an area of low pressure move off. a cold front move through the region and in behind it. here comes that high pressure that's going to usher in that beautiful weather right on towards the end of the workweek. temperatures overnight tonight going to be nice. as we wake up into the day tomorrow morning, you're looking at temperatures between 58 and 64 degrees. seasonal conditions. nice morning to take the dog for an early walk. as you make your way out tomorrow, mostly sunny. a few additional afternoon clouds. 83 to 86. northwest winds at five to ten. next four days, 83 on your friday. once again, a beautiful friday. 84 on saturday. 90 on sunday. so yes, getting a little warm. and that could lead us into our next heat wave. but that's not going to be anything like what we saw earlier ankle. and shanahan says it's unlikely he'll play against the cards. he was wearing a walking boot monday. he's now wearing a brace on his ankle but he's still not ready to play even if it were a regular season game. so we will be getting a healthy dose of rex grossman. he's played well for the skins, due in part to his comfort level. in kyle shanahan's new system dating back to last season in houston. grossman's quarterback rating, a robust 97. sixth best in the nfl this preseason. >> i just want to, you know, play smart. and run the offense. i mean, sounds simple, but just play smart, go where the defense takes me and just run the offense the way kyle wants me to. >> my main thing is when we have a bad play, i don't want him to make a worse play. a couple bad situations last week has apologized. her name is mary bail. she was identified after that video in coventry, england, went viral on the internet. it was 15 hours before it was rescued by the owners heard her purring. probably screaming. bail said her action was a split-second misjudgment. police have not made a decision yet about any charges. a new study that links diet soda to premature births is gaining a lot of attention tonight. researchers in denmark looked at 60,000 women over six years. those who drank four or more artificially sweetened sodas a day were 78% more likely to deliver early than those women who didn't drink any diet sodas. the researchers say they're not sure why the diet drinks appear to be linked to early deliveries. the beverage industry disputes the study's findings. everyone a guy in germany went to the doctor complaining of headaches. turns out he had a bullet lodged in his skull for five years. he recalls getting hit in the back of the head during a street celebration on new year's eve. police think somebody might have fired a shot into the air at midnight and the bullet came down and hit him in the head. the man figured it was a firecracker. so he partied on. >> "tonight
