gunned down. he's being remembered for his work in uniform and his volunteer work on his own time. good evening, i'm jimmantly. jim and doreen have the night off. trooper first class wesley brown was killed overnight after he escorted a rowdy customer out of a bar. tonight, the manhunt is on for this man. he is seen from the appleby's from where the shooting occurred. we have a live report with the latest on the manhunt. darcy? >> reporter: in this surveillance video, you not only see the person of interest wanted in connection with this murder, you see the trooper minutes before he's gunned down. the man pictured here in the light colored shirt and glasses is being sought in connection with the murder of wesley brown. the photos were taken from surveillance cameras at a forestville restaurant where the off duty trooper was gunned down while working a part time security detail. >> the person only a video surveillance camera footage is a person of interest and was taken by the appleby's surveillance cameras. >> reporter: the man in the video is the same one who was escorted out of the restaurant by trooper brown, also shown in the video, because he was being disorderly and refused to pay his bill. minutes later, the 24-year-old trooper was shot and killed in an ambush style attack when he stepped out to make a cell phone call. police say the man they're looking for is 25 to 30 years old, 5'7," 130 pounds. he was wearing a baby blue hugo ball shirt with a zipper front and jeans. >> we're just hoping that someone that was there that night remembers something and reports it to the police. >> reporter: the shooting happened just after midnight friday at the appleby's. the gunman got away on foot. police searched a nearby apartment complex and talked to residents there with no results. police are hoping the community will help them solve this case. >> there is no way to make sense of this. we have to do everything in our power as a community to bring people forward, to step up and to rescue whatever bit of justice we can from this situation. >> these kinds of cases, you can't let languish. you have to go after it. because this is not only an attack on a trooper or state police or government, it's an attack on our society. >> reporter: a $50,000 cash reward is being offered for information that leads to an arrest and conviction in this murder case. reporting live from palmer park. back to you. >> trooper wesley brown grew up in maryland. he had become a model citizen, giving back to his community in a variety of ways. after turning his own life around, he began a youth mentoring program in his old neighborhood. brown was the youngest to graduate in his state trooper class at the age of 21. and he had just recently proposed to his girlfriend. for all those reasons, brown's death has had a profound impact on those who knew him and looked up to him. many of them gathered tonight outside his home and in about an hour, many of his colleagues will hold their own vigil. news 4's jackie benson is live at state police barracks in forestville. jackie? >> reporter: those who gathered earlier tonight heard from a woman who is very proud of her son. ♪ >> i thank god for the years that he allowed me to have with him. because he truly was a gift from god. i just want to say i love him. keep his dream alive. >> reporter: friends, family and citizens of seat pleasant, maryland, surrounded the family of trooper wesley brown, his mother, fiancee of just one month, ebony norris and his eight brothers and sisters. >> what he told the kids in our family and the kids in his group is without family, you have nothing. and you can make your own family. those of us joining hands, we're making our own family. this community is a family. >> reporter: the man who shot trooper brown as he was working off duty security at an appleby's restaurant took him for more than just his family and the maryland state police. they took him from this community young people where he created a mentoring program, funding it with a second job. wesley brown was tremendously loved and respected here. he was supposed to take a group of youngsters on a trip to new york the morning he was murdered. >> the attack right across the street here. this house became a house of hope for countless young men in this community. we will not allow the wickedness of an individual in our community steal the love that was given to us. >> reporter: there will be another vigil on midnight here at the maryland state police facility. back to you. >> jackie benson, thank you. scientists now say as many as 100 hillon gallons of oil may have leaked into the gulf of mexico since the oil spill in april. that is twice the original estimate and nine times the sizest exxon valdez. it will take until july for bp to get enough tankers in place to capture that amount of oil. a more serious environmental impact and new amounts could mean billions in fines for bp. leaders in the gulf say they're also going to take a huge economic hit because of a six-month moratorium placed on deep sea drilling. >> mr. president, you are looking for someone's butt to kick. you're kicking ours. >> another crippling blow to the coast of louisiana and mississippi and alabama. >> the president will head back to the gulf monday and tuesday for another assessment. he could also have his first face-to-face meeting with bp executives when they come to washington next week. arlington national cemetery will keep a call center open all weekend to talk with people concerned with remains of their loved ones may have been misidentified or misplaced. the call center was put in place after a report yesterday found mismanagement of the cemetery. officials say they can't be sure where the bodies of some 200 military veterans were buried. the call center number is 703-607-8199. it will be open from 8:00 a.m. until 7:00 in the evening tomorrow and sunday. when we come back tonight on news 4 at 11:00, a small plane crashes into a school sparking a huge fire today. the first lady gets emotional while talking about her parents' sacrifices at a commencement speech in the districts. and we'll have a report fr arkansas where flash flooding devastated part of that state and took more than a dozen lives. veronica, how about our weather? >> this is the last comfortable night for a while. it will be hot by day. very warm by night. the relief may come from thunderstorms. v.j., the world cup is officially under way. a germany knuckleballer does in the os and the nats run into some not so friendly faces a small plane crashed into a high school in arizona today. school is out for the summer so there were no students inside at the time. eyewitnesses say the cessna circled the area a few times before it took a nosedive right into the school. two people aboard the plane were killed. no one on the ground was injured. fire crews from more than ten towns helped fight the flames as houses in the neighborhood were evacuated. rescue crews still on their way to pick up that teenage sailor stranded in the indian ocean. 16-year-old american abby sunderland issued a distress signal after 30-foot waves snapped the mast on her boat yesterday. abby left california two months ago on a quest to sail around the world alone. tonight she stuck half way between africa and australia. the rescue boat should get there by 11:00 tomorrow morning. michelle obama got emotional today while giving a commencement address for a graduation ceremony. a charter school took over an costa last fall and in one year, it went from graduating half its senior class to an 80% graduation rate. the first lady said with the right support, anything is possible. >> my parents sacrificed for us, pouring everything they had into us, being there for us to encouraging us to reach for a life they never knew. it is because of them and because of the support i got from teachers that i am standing here today. >> 164 seniors in anacostia got their i did ploem yaz today. most of them are headed off to college. still ahead tonight, the pope makes a public apology to victims of sex abuse. the fda is about to take up discussion on a new and controversial pill that lasts for five mornings after. and veronica has your weekend weather. stay with us. angry on lookers yelled at jorna van der sloot as taken from the police headquarters to prison. peruvian authorities say he and the woman he murdered met in a casino. he is still the suspect in the murder of alabama teen natalee holloway. van der sloot said he knows where her body is. flores was murdered five years to the day after holloway disappeared. pope benedict xvi begged for forgiveness from god and those abused by members of the clergy. it was the first time he directly addressed the catholic church's sex abuse scandal while at the alter at st. peter's basilica. during the mass, the pope pledged to do everything possible to prevent priests from abusing children in the future. the search for survivors from deadly flash floods in southwest arkansas has been suspended for the night. at least 16 people died when floodwaters swept through a campground. dozens more are still missing tonight. leeann greg has our report. >> reporter: flooded rivers receding as fast as they rose, leaving behind valleys of destruction and remote national forest. >> and within a matter of not even 20 minutes, the water probably rose 20 foot. >> reporter: raging currents swept up camp sites and vehicles in the albert pike recreation area full of vacationers. many of them families. massive rains up to eight inches overnight thursday caused the flash floods and caught campers, hikers and fishermen by surprise as they slept. >> to actually be in it and see the force and the quickness that a flash flood comes up on you is just unbelievable. probably the scariest thing i've ever been in. >> reporter: rivers in the area climbed more than 20 feet in less than an hour. survivors who clung to trees for safety recount horrifying sounds. >> please for your kid sake, please, climb the tree. and i said okay. i got up there and got lodged. i got a bunch of bruises and stuff but nothing compared to that baby screaming in the river. we had to climb 40 feet to the tree to save our own lives. >> reporter: rescuers from the air, horse back and boat were searching for 40 people still missing. >> the last body was found eight miles from the campsite down the river. if that tells you anything about the strength of that water. >> reporter: and now as the rivers recede, concerns the death toll could climb. a deadly force of nature leaving stunned and grieving families in its wake. leeann greg, nbc news. close to home we've had a bit of a dry spell. you say that could change this weekend? >> that could change this weekend. all part of the same weather system that hit the west so hard. arkansas, again, especially. areas in missouri. that's a slow moving storm system that's going to be heading our way. we could have downpours like we had on sunday if you recall where we had some downpours, had a handful of warnings, too. in terms of the heat this weekend, really hot. high temperatures close to 90. this will be the last comfortable night for us folks until monday. let's take a look and see what we had today. it was a gorgeous day. really nice evening. this is celebrate fairfax. beautiful sunset with thor if is wheel there. i believe that takes place the whole weekend. sunset today at 8:33. gorgeo gorgeous, gorgeous. 86 degrees is our high temperature today. the low is 67. the average, though, is 83. and we've had all but actually now four day this is month that have been above average. we're at 75 degrees now. the dew point temperature has been sneaking upward from the upper 50s today now to 60 degrees. winds out of the south-southeast at 6 miles per hour. here we go through the day tomorrow. we start off with lots of sunshine. we pick up the clouds. it's really late, i think, around 5:00, 6:00 or so that we could see storms here. again, any of the storms slow movers delivering a lot of rain. 82 in elkins, west virginia. that was the high temperature today. now we're in the 70s throughout the area. 60s in west virginia. you can see the warm front is. that is the warm front that is making its way through our area during the overnight period. big storms firing indianapolis and around cincinnati. they're under a flood watch right now. meanwhile, as we go ahead and take a look at some of the locations today, over four inches of rain in arkansas. missouri also picking up close to that. again, for the same slow moving storm system we could have our own heavy rains around here. get caught under one of the thunderstorms this weekend could pick up anywhere from a quarter to three quarters of an inch of rain. close to a quarterer in huntington, west virginia today. and we're talking dew point temperatures. again, those are now anywhere between being 60 to 64, slightly humid. 60 to 69, almost 70-degree range the weekend. look at what is west of us. chicago, 72. 73 in memphis. you factor in the temperature, the numbers are quite high today. out west, close to 100 degrees. texas areas of the nation's midsection. so it's going to be a day tomorrow with some high heat, high humidity and scattered storms coming during the late afternoon through the evening. then on saturday -- then on sunday any time scattered throughout the day. but more of that rain coming again sunday after the heating. so here's your forecast. mostly clear. humidity inching upward. again, last comfortable morning. we'll see a high temperature right around 90 degrees. storms through the weekend even monday, too, for flag day. tuesday right now is dry. and then we'll get more rain in here wednesday. yes, jim, you were asking earlier, we could use some rain around here. i don't like to get it though with the heavy thunderstorms. but we're down now about an inch. >> okay. veronica, thanks. coming up, drivers beware. it could be a nightmare around tyson's corn they are weekend. and next in sports, let the games begin. the world cup kicks off in south africa. dan has your highlights next. well, dan is here indians without strasburg. >> exactly. this is a funny game, baseball. they say that about golf. you never can figure things out. last season austin kerns is batting below .300. this year he is cleveland's best player. tonight he basically beat his old mates by himself. and to make things worse, there is another familiar face on the indians bench. let's go to cleveland for this one. manny is very happy as the new manager of the tribe. maybe this is why. nats pitcher luis adalano in a giving mood. serves it up to the aforementioned austin kerns. kerns getting his crunch on. that is gone. he would like that one back. a three-run shot puts the indians on top 3-1. kerns' sixth home run of the year. bottom of the fourth, bases empty. kerns says how about a carbon copy special? he says, you got to be kidding me. again? almost in the same spot. makes it 4-1. he gave up three home runs on the night. bottom of the seventh, tyler walker on the hill. kerns going for his third bomb of the night. this one is slightly different spot. going in and so is morgan. a collision at the wall. but morgan comes away with the ball. robs kerns of the third home run. walker says, thank you very much. but the nationals still lose this one 7-2. more interleague play in baltimore. the orioles returned to normalcy. unfortunately that, means another loss. baffled by knuckleballer r.a. dickie. he's been unhittable since being called up from the minors. this little guy having fun with dad's sunglasses. tries to put them on and then tries to eat them. i have seen that before, i believe. top of the fourth. mets up 1-0. cris carter getting his home run swing on as well. filling in nicely for the dh for the mets, taking jeremy guthrie out of the yard. his first career major league home run. it's of the three-run variety. and this is r.a. dickie. the knuckleball was nasty. adam jones, wow. that is nasty stuff. he struck out eight orioles in seven innings of work. the mets down the birds 5-1. nebraska now a member of the big ten and major conference realignments are imminent. also imminent, a decision from michigan state basketball coach tom izzo. izzo is offered the head coaching job with the cleveland cavaliers. he might not have lebron back. izzo expected to make a decision by tomorrow. now the event the world is talking about, that is the world cup. tomorrow it is the united states with a very highly anticipated matchup against england. today, south africa got things going. it was a sellout crowd to watch the host country. and mexico in the opening match after a scoreless first half. we're in the 53rd minute. south africa out on the break. they get the ball on the foot of this player. scores the first goal of the world cup. and it was a sweet one. the host nation up 1-0 over mexico. check out the coach. but the lead would not last long. the celebration is pretty g digging that. 79th minute. mexico, the cross to a wide open marques who fires past the south african keeper for the equalizer. 1-1 is how this one would end between south africa and mexico. tomorrow afternoon, the game everybody has been waiting for, the uk against the u.s. and safe to say i know who we're going to be rooting for. >> i think so. and speaking of, up next, turning dupont circumstance nool an outdoor venue for world cup viewing. those parties tomorrow. stay wit the fda will begin reviewing a controversial birth control bill that works long after the morning after pill. it's called ella. it is legal in europe. it can prevent pregnancy five days after unprotected sex. according to "the washington post," this new drug is restarting debate about the distinction between preventing and ending a pregnancy. women who don't realize they're already pregnant might use the drug and unknowingly give themselves an abortion. those in favor say ella has been tested only within five days of unprotected sex with no evidence it works as anything other than a contraceptive. if you're planning on driving in the tis onz corner area twheekd, give yourself plenty of time, folks. starting at 9:30 tonight, all lanes of chain bridge road, also known as 123, are closed at the beltway. crews will begin taking down the old 495 bridge for part of the hot lanes project. vdot says drivers should use route 7 and georgetown pike as alternate routes. police will be on hand to direct traffic. work should be completed in time for the monday morning rush hour. quite a setup down at dupont circle as world cup fever sweeps the nation's capital. a group of folks set up two giant screens to watch tomorrow's world cup match between the u.s. and england. just for good measure, the embassy of south africa is giving out prizes to some of those who turn out. that game begins at 2:30. we'll be right back.
