months combing through images from dozens of security cameras. some students accused university police of being overzealous in their investigation. >> it's showing how the culture right now is so anti-police and nobody knows who to trust anymore, what to trust. there is a lot of people who, you know, are -- since the arrest, oh, the cops must have done something to force them into, you know, into confession of some kind. >> some people are definitely concerned about it. but i think it sort of died down a little bit. >> reporter: university of maryland police spokesman suspends the investigators, if convicted, the students face a possibility of fines, jail time, and expulsion. jim, back to you. >> jackie benson, thank you. ambulances were called to west springfield high school in west fairfax county after three students got sick in school. in an em to parents, the principal says the kids algdzly smoked something before school that made them ill. a fourth student who was were arrested in the boston area, the third was arrested in maine. all of them were arrested on immigration violations and not criminal charges. federal authorities think the men provided funds to faisal shahzad, the pakistani born u.s. citizen accused of leaving a vehicle full of explosives in times square two weeks ago. >> one of the things that they did is to provide him with funds. and so we're trying to trace back to see exactly what was the nature of the transactions, what the purpose of the sharing of debt of those moneys. >> faisal shahzad told authorities he got money for the plot through a system and an informal currency exchange system used among muslim immigrants. it's possible they had no knowledge of shahzad's plan. president obama visited times square this evening to personally thank the officers who have responded to the bomb scare. at a command center, the president praised the new york police department's coordination with state and federal law enforcement on counter-terrorism efforts. stop a massive oil leak involves a pipe only half a foot in width. tonight crews are trying to thread that pipe in a larger tube that's leaking on the ocean floor. once attached, it is supposed to suck the oil to a tanker at the surface. bp, british petroleum, that is, says if thissen does the work they'll try to use a small containment box. meantime, the owner of the oil trig, transocean, asked a federal court today to limit its liability to $27 million. one of the major draws for people living in montgomery county is the park system there. there are thousands of acres of parks. but if some proposed budget cuts go through, the policing of all that land will fall on the shoulders of a few dozen officers. darcy spencer has our report. >> reporter: 18 of the 88 officers in the maryland national capital park police force could lose their jobs because of a budget short fall. >> you know, the parks will not be safe. again, like i'm saying, you're taking 20% of the workforce and firing them. >> reporter: the police union says the proposed reduction in force the risk cuts that will take us back to september if they recruit. it's one proposal to deal with the county's billion dollar deficit. >> these are real people, real families, real homes, real mortgages. >> they're fighting a battle for the future of park police on two fronts. the first, the risk. second, fighting the county executive's recommend togs eliminate the department and mercy officers into the county police department. >> sometimes call for tough measures. however, by eliminating the park police, you're creating a safety iss issue. >> reporter: a decrease in police president koens mean an increase in crime and that includes gang activity. a spokesman for county executive says that public safety were to be jeopardize, the county would not consider merging the departments. but supporters of the plan say there are some duplications including dispatch and that a merge makes sense in tight budget times. >> is there a better way to take that specialty that our park police have in patrolling our parks and make that more decentralized and part of montgomery county police? by so doing, can we achieve efficiency and savings? >> park users were against cutting officers and merging the forces. >> i think it's the worst thing they could do, especially in where it's become so popular in merging the departments. >> reporter: darcy spencer, news 4. still ahead on news 4 at 11:00, holland mourns to kill those killed in a plane crash. a lawsuit calls into question the complete stranger? millions of americans rely on online reviews. but how trustworthy are they? liz crenshaw is here with more. hi, liz. a lot of people wondered about this. >> we all do. we all turn to the internet for a wealth of information including shopping advice. but a recent lawsuit filed against the popular website yelp has some consumers and business owners second guessing the legitimacy of some of those reviews. >> i wrote the review. i posted it. but when i went back on to yelp to see if it was published by the site, it wasn't there. >> reporter: debbie has been going to xyz salon since it opened ten years ago. she posted a review on yelp, a social networking review site after noticing a negative review posted that was dated a few years ago. she says there were no recent reviews posted, not even her own. >> which i thought was odd. i thought i never posted a review, maybe i did something wrong. i tried it again. posted my review. i looked on yelp and once again, no review. >> reporter: she told the salon's owner and part time stylist for nbc about yelp's site and negative review that stands. >> did you ever contact them and say what happened? >> several times. they say they have a filter in place. if they believe i paid for a good review, they would back off again. i said so you believe that everybody that's ever said anything nice about me for four years i paid them? you know? that doesn't make sense. >> reporter: several business owners are accusing yelp of manipulating the site's content. 11 businesses are part of a class action lawsuit against yelp including this d.c. restaurant. the lawsuit alleges yelp sells advertising to business owners in exchange provides favors such as removing or relocating negative reviews. creating and posting positive reviews and insuring negative reviews will not appear in google or other search engine results. this woman, a facial spa owner in california, says yelp sales people called her repeatedly and asked her to buy advertising in exchange for more exposure and better "control of her reviews." what does that mean? >> this is probably that you can remove the negative reviews and, you know, carry on with your good reviews. that was very fishy answer. >> reporter: yelp tells us the lawsuit claims lack merit and fight the suit vigorously. it does not remove or move reviews in exchange for advertising or response yourship. it does use a filter system to fight shilz and malicious content and treats advertisers and nonadvertisers equally. allegations against yelp bring up a valid question, can you trust online reviews and the opinions of complete strangers regardless of what site you use? >> everyone in the online space is a researcher and not just a reader. and so you have to always be a qualified reader. you have to gauge credibility. >> reporter: yelp reports more than 30 million monthly visitors. in a study done by opinion research corporation, 84% of americans say online reviews influence their purchasing behavior. how do you feel about online reviews in general? >> i think that's fair enough if you're allowing everything out there. >> reporter: now yelp says it recently made changes to its website. it now allows business owners and customers to read the filtered reviews. so admitting that there are filters and also remembering that we have to be thoughtful when we read these things from people we don't know. >> how long will people keep using them? >> it's extremely popular. people say they actually read the stuff out there. >> but if we can't trust them, how long will that continue? >> another question asked. i have never read one of those things in my life. i couldn't care what somebody else says. >> because you only care about -- >> yeah, i trust you. >> all right. >> thanks, liz. >> you're welcome. >> things are going to get a little crazy tomorrow afteren into and early evening. >> crazier? >> crazy with thunderstorms. we had one batch that came through
