Nightly news begins now. From nbc news World Headquarters in new york, this is nbc nightly news with lester holt. Good evening. Today the icecold water of washington reality was thrown over the celebration by House Republicans over yesterdays successful vote to repeal and replace obamacare. Thats because of the still bigger battle that awaits in the u. S. Senate, where key republicans are saying tonight slow down, as they plan to go back to square one to craft their own Health Care Replacement plan. A process that will take more time and require virtually every republican to be on board to pass. Here is National Correspondent Peter Alexander with what happens next. Reporter tonight, its the Republican Health care plan going under the knife. Youll have Better Health care at a lower cost. And now im calling on the senate to take action. Reporter but the house helped bill where republicans can only afford to lose two votes. The senate will write its own bill. My goals will be to rescue the people who are likely not to be able to buy insurance next year. Reporter among the flash points, whether to end the expansion of medicaid that could cost consumers their coverage and funding for planned parenthood. Heading home for a weeklong break, house members are likely to face backlash for their votes. Shame reporter punctuated by the rose garden celebration. Its kind of like george bush going up on top of the Aircraft Carrier and saying mission accomplished. The idea of highfiving and spiking the ball into the end zone i think is dangerous. Reporter republicans now facing the same line of attack they once lobbed at democrats. I dont think we should pass bills that we havent read that we dont know what they cost. Reporter political forecasters predicting as many as 20 house seats could swing in democrats favor after the vote, with liberal groups touting more than 2. 5 million raised in the last 24 hours. Republicans were set up for a tough but this bill just throws gasoline on the fire of an already volatile cycle. Reporter the president raising eyebrows by praising australias mostly government funded universal health care system. I shouldnt say this too. Our great gentleman and friend from australia, because you have Better Health care than we do. Reporter mr. Trumps explanation tonight, of course the australians have Better Health care than we do. Everybody does. So how long before any of this becomes a reality . While President Trump is urging the senate to get going, one leading republican senator tells us were not up any deadline. Were going the take our time. Lester . Peter alexander tonight, thank you. While the Gop Health Care bill awaits action in the senate, its already having a farreaching impact on patients worried or confused about what it could mean for them, specifically if they have preexisting conditions. Reporter three weeks after emerson was born, he was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. How tough it is to keep him alive . Its a lot of work. I know that never in a million years did i think i would have a kid with a fatal disease. And then it happened, and i had to handle it. Reporter one medication alone is 1200 a month. If i dont have access to insurance to keep my son alive, i need to find a job where i make a Million Dollars a year. Ready . Reporter Elizabeth Fuller says after she heard about the house vote, she cried. I just hope that absolutely none of them have a child or a grandchild or a Family Member born with a preexisting condition. Reporter republicans say their plan will cover preexisting conditions. If you have a plan today and you have a ee be protected forever. Reporter but the bill would allow states to permit insurers to charge people with preexisting conditions more to help cover those increased costs, state cosset up highrisk pools. The federal government would set aside 108 billion over nine years in part to help pay for them. The Nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation says high risk pools can work, but only if funded properly. The republican bill did not set enough money aside to cover the costs of high risk Pool Coverage for the people who could find themselves priced out of affordable coverage in the private market. Reporter as the bill moves forward, the fullers and many other families will be watching. Gabe gutierrez, nbc news, kansas city, missouri.
