Wonder about their own childs bus safety. We have a closer look at the issue of school bus safety. Reporter even before this terrible tragedy, the national Highway Traffic Safety Administration had a straightforward answer for the question of how safe are school buses . That answer is that they are the safest way for children to get to and from school. The Administration Says that buses are seven than traveling by car or truck. While more than 30,000 people are killed in crashes every year, six School Aged Children die as passengers in school buses annually. Of course we want the number to be zero but statistics reveal how rare School Bus Crash deaths really are. Still questions remain about why safety belts arent required on school buses like they have been in cars. The government doesnt feel theyre needed. For one thing, what passengers likely to be significantly less forceful than they experience in a car crash. Also the high backed cushion seats usually protect passengers in frontal crashes. Seat belt advocates say seven out of ten real world accidents are not frontal. Federal government allows states and districts to set rules when it comes to seat belts on school buses. Prior to living in raleigh, i lived and worked in chase into gaithersburg for two years. I can tell you absolutely devastating for the community but for parents everywhere who have to put their children on the bus every morning, the bottom line is clear. Seat belts are expensive. As many School Systems are looking to cut costs it is unlikely that theyll be added any time soon. Thank you very much. The rest of our morning commute, lunch time traffic, much of our evening commute will have to deal with the closure. Lets talk about alternate routes this morning, inbound atlantic avenue is the one the city is recommending. It got badly backed up heavy delays where atlantic turns into wake forest road as you head into downtown raleigh, heavy delays showing up on the sensors. One option is crabtree to raleigh and then you can head back toward downtown. Also we are noticing that inbound glenwood is congested as well. Maybe some of that is traffic from people taking an alternate route trying to avoid capital boulevard. This is something that will be with you for the rest of the day. Plan on the delays and we are taking a wide view of the triangle, heavy traffic on 40 west between u. S. 1 to aviation parkway. Because it is slow around wade, out bound is backed up heading away from the belt line. 40 east is slow through 540 interchange from the airport exits, sun glare congestion delays.
