Today. Sampson county we mentioned, wayne county closed today and tomorrow. And Wilson County schools. A full list is scrolling at the bottom of your screen and wral. Com. Hurricane matthew unleashed its fewery this morning and dropped massive amounts of rain triggering flooding in roads and neighborhoods. Hundreds of rescues in Cumberland County and more today. At least rescued. Bryan mims is live along the Cape Fear River. And bryan, you have seen so many dramatic scenes over the weekend. Reporter and i must say that the Cape Fear River looks dramatic this morning. Its a monster. Ill put it that way, a brown, roiling monster. I have never seen it this high in 10 years living in the area. Downstream. From this standpoint, its usually 40 to 50 feet down. And look at the water, almost up to the bridge and a railroad trestle. Its touching that. A number of traffic lights are out and power remains out for most businesses. And let me show you video from lena was talking about the rescues, hundreds of them, more than 700 people rescued in Cumberland County. Pwcs website, i checked it, and it had 1500 customers without power last night compared to 20,000 sunday morning. Thats significant progress. Water rescue crews from 3 states and charlotte saved more than 70 people during the week along with crews locally. Yesterday afternoon where a number of backroads and homes are flooded out. I drove 1 of thosed radios and its no longer flooded. Thats good news. And falls creek was gushing over the pavement yesterday, a lowlying area that chronically floods, and the creek was way down. The road is mostly dry with piles of sand and debris, and traffic lights out around the city. This is Research Drive was reporting from yesterday near hope mills where a tractor trailer truck jackknifed. And the water has significantly receded and the water is still a few feet from the truck. I95 is close to where the truck stits. Sits. I drove that area, and there is and 301 split up to hope mill and near wade that was closed yesterday. Let me bring you back here live to the Cape Fear River and the big concern as elizabeth discussed, the creeks going down. Cross creek is almost within the bank and gently moving along but the cape fear as you can plainly see, this is the big concern from throug day and week. It crested or leaped 58 feet yesterday here. And it is expected to begin receding today. And that is music to the ears of those who live along the river. As i said, my shows about 50 to 60 feet above the surface and it was coming up to my yard, made my wife quite jittery, and it looks like it was slowly recede being. You were smart to build on a bluff, bryan, and we hear swift water rescues in Robeson County along the lumber river. We will be checking with those folks later today. But you are a guy who has experienced some of the worst of it as a homeowner and as a reporter. Yeah. And businesses are still without power in South Carolina. Crews from all across the state are working to get the power back on. We have new numbers into the newsroom right now. More than 490,000 people are without power according to duke energy. And 64,000 in wake county wake county has the most outages in the state and while the storm may have passed, getting the power back on will be a long process. You will have to be patient. A lot of trees are down and uprooted breaking power lines and causing outages. Duke energy is urging customers to be patient. They have crews all over working hard, and i think they had 1 crew from canada to help out. Its amazing. This has the storm has hit us harder than we expected it would. We expect fewer outages than we had to deal with. But we have 6000, 7,000, 8000 folks in the field and several thousand more coming. All told, roughly 10,000 people will be working the storm in the field. Its really like a military operation. This is similar to that. You have remote food trucks that have come in and you have large tents. In some cases, we have tents out. The company hasnt given a timeline on when outages will be restored. Beautiful weather today. At least we can savor that. Elizabeth, how long will this last . Fortunately, it looks like it will last all week into the weekend and probably next week, too. Thats the wonderful thing. We dont need any rain any time soon with all the flooding were seeing. We have a Flood Warning in effect, not for additional rain but for the lingering flooding it was amazing to hear from bryan mims who he is seeing with the Cape Fear River and as you mentioned, a lot of the smaller streams are coming down and rushing into the bigger rivers, the cape fear and neus, and tar river and well let you know when the forecast is for them to come back down. Beautiful in wilson, not a cloud in the sky in downtown. 50 in durham and 49 at wake well see more widespread temperatures in the low to mid 40s for tomorrow morning and it may be the coolest morning so far this fall. At lunchtime around here, 61 and looking at 67 for the high this afternoon and back in the 50s once the sun sets. So Cool Temperatures today and sunshine and low humidity to go along with it. Brian shrader in the Traffic Center talking about the closed roads out there. We have been watching the reports all weekend al the list got longer and longer and has only gone down a little bit since the height of the storm at 8 08. Roads closed due to water covering the roads or in some cases, the roads washed away. Lets have a look at the list in wake county coming up. But we want to talk about interstates closed including i 95 blocked in both directions along multiple sections between including much of fayetteville. Thats what the purple on the map indicates. A lot of areas that you cannot get through. Also in lumberton, the interstate is closed. The lumber river has just flooded right over i95. Lets take you to Johnston County where i40s closed in both directions. There is a section of 40 closed around the cross roads and between benson and newton grove, both directions that you need to avoid those areas. The d. O. T. Does not have a specific detour or a list of the interstates so you will have to find alternate routes. Old stage road between 42 and fanny brown, and lake wheeler between 401 and rogers at hobblebush way. That was blocked out. And we have a few accidents but overall, the major routes are looking okay. Creedmoor however the signals are out at creedmoor at 540. They are looking at getting a state trooper out there to help out. Looking at delay and maybe a sun glare delay through south durham. Back to you. Thank you, brian. Appreciate it. Our coverage of the aftermath of Hurricane Matthew continues after the break. How many communities were impacted along the coast and where they are asked to boil the water. H knife. But i carry a pistol. I fight back. Thats why im still here. Every woman has a right to defend herself with a gun if she chooses. Hillary clinton disagrees with that. Dont let politicians take away your right to own a gun. In raleigh, several neighborhoods will still be cleaning up from Hurricane Matthew damage. Areas near Cameron Village were impassable because of downed trees. Large oaks were uprooted causing damage. Several communities are working through water system issues. Fayetteville and sanford issued advisories, and wayne and johnston counties put advisories in place for some of its customers. In wilmington, high winds brought down a lot of trees and a lot of winds. Resident began cleaning up yesterday, out there with the up the debris. Actually, we were a little bit scared when the sun went down because the uncertainty and how unknown things would be, and then the backside of the storm came with a little bit more wind. Still pulling people out, and the rescue workers and utility crews, boy, a lot of work to be done. Lets take a look at wilmington. As things started to really it looks like we may see. We can tell that wilmington will not see the heaviest rain. It looked like it would be inland between fayetteville and wilmington where we saw the heaviest rain. So they are doing clean up certainly today but nothing like what we are having to deal with in our viewing area. So fortunate there. 50degrees at the airport and its a the dew point very low at 43, grms fall river. 46 in roxboro and south hill and temperatures will be cooler tomorrow. 51 in fayetteville. We have the most range, 14, 15, 16 in the blue contour and over 10 in the areas, so rough. 1 of the places that will be hard hit is the tar river, not as much in louisburg, higher up in the river basin. It likely peaked already but will come down out of flood stage tomorrow but all the water is rushing downstream and affecting the tar river at tarboro and it likely hasnt crested yet, not likely to hit the all time record level but thursday and remains in flood stage, most likely past the weekend. Julia sims is in tarboro and will come up in about 10 minutes to talk about what the conditions look like on the river. And here we will be nice and dry and cool, wonderful, 67 today, 67 tomorrow.
