What a shot that is with the icicles in front of the camera. They are melting because the freezing rain that is dripping off. That tells it all, doesnt it . Chapel hill residents didnt allow this Winter Weather to slow them down. Mikaya thurmond caught up with a few people would ventured out to run the last minute errands. Reporter you see it posted on so many doors, closed for inclement weather. This was a science just like many others but the stores that did open attracted customers from far and wide. We just have like cookies and ice cream, paper towels, q tips. Reporter locked and loaded, shoppers came out despite the weather. After crews of street cleaners cleared the way, more and more people headed out. Shoppers who didnt mind having a little fun as they ran their errands. We are spending all day outside. It has been a year since ive seep snow. I am excited to be out in it. Reporter after spending a day out in all of this stuff, my best advice is to call ahead before you decide to pop in for shopping. Mikaya thurmond, wral news, chapel hill. Is cream is good any time. I know it sounds cold of the ice cream is good any time. I know it sounds cold. Eat it inside in front of the fire. This is a mess. The issue is especially north and west of recallery as we may have significant amounts of freezing rain still to come this evening. That is only going to add to the crisis accrual and the risk of Power Outages. Hope any here in the raleigh area, we are close enough to pleasing where we wont build up that much more than wave already got. Well start off by take a look at that camera. We can see the icicles there attempting to melt. Hopefully that progress will continue at least in that area if not others throughout the course of the evening. It is 30 at rdu right now. Still below freezing there and the wind is really whipping out of the east at 23 Miles Per Hour. That is going to continue to be the case right on through the evening into the overnight period so obviously f you build up ice on trees and power lines, then you start whipping 20 and 20mile an hour wind on that, that can create additional problems in addition to the weight of the ice on the trees and power lines. Not a real pleasant situation for these folks here. Other temperatures, wilmington, no problem. 42 and look at hatteras. 57degrees out there with warm air coming in off the atlantic. It is above freezing at fayetteville and also at greenville and then we are below freezing here if only barely ardu and well below freezing at greensboro and mountains. Those are the areas that we need to watch out as we head on thugthe evening. You can see the big picture here, the big snowstorm now in progress across virginia and up into southern pennsylvania. Some of those areas may be picking up two to perhaps three feet of snow over the next 4 hours and then you see a little bit of a lull in the pattern back in here. We think we are actually going to get into that lull later on tonight and the precipitation could actually shut off for a while before trying to resume in some areas tomorrow. So we take a look at futurecast here and again, it shows the precipitation continuing in earnest right on through 11 00 or 12 00. We get into a lull as temperatures fall back into the 20s. Anything that is liquid will become solid again later on tonight. Then the moisture wrapping around the west side of the system will circulate back in from the north to northwest and that will give us periods of light snow and flurries tomorrow. As you can see here t looks like the biggest threat of our Northern Counties and mainly during the course of the afternoon, not so much the morning, and then that will finally pull away. By the time we get to sunday, we are back to sunshine, temperatures will be above freezing everywhere and life should be much, much more pleasant at that particular point in time. For tonight, in the short term, temperatures will actually continue to rise probably on until about midnight and even in the raleigh area, it may get above freezing and then they projected lows you see here dont happen until well after midnight on toward tomorrow morning when the precipitation actually winds down and perhaps even quits for a while. Then tomorrow, periods of light snow and flurries, there may somebody light assume layings especially from the triangle area north into southern virginia and with temperatures at or just below the freezing mark, obviously, caution would be advised if you are out traveling tomorrow. Not necessarily advising you dont travel, but if you do, just be careful, and common sense on. Sunday, beautiful day, mostly next week, it look like we may have a succession of cloudy days and to be perfectly honest with you, with Everything Else going on, there wasnt a whole lot of effort put into day, five, six and seven. I would just sort of lets worry about the more important things here and well get to that when we get to that. Thank you, we appreciate the honesty. As of 3 00 this affect, washington, d. C. Is officially airnd blizzard warning through sunday morning. Snow is beginning to pick up in the Nations Capital where the mayor asked everyone to be off e roads by midafternoon. The earliest estimates were between 18 and 24 in. Of his snow. That is what they are still on track to receive . Reporter yeah, i would say estimate. Some estimates are even saying possibly to and a half feet. Well have to wait and see. I can tell you where im he really just about two and a half hours ago around 1 30 this afternoon and it is a very wet snow. You can feel that. We know with wet snow comes the risk, the possibility of Power Outages and downs power lines. I know that is the fear where you are and that is the fear tens of thousands of people. This storm could affect a quarter of the population of the united states. Now, i just want to give you a little look at where we are standing right now. The mayor had asked people to today. You can see there is still some traffic in front of the wash monument where were standing on the National Mall here. But by and large, the majority of traffic has sort of settled town and the hope would be that people arent out there tonight when things could get much, much worse. Here, where we are, we are talking about possible maryland on saturday, they hour. That is only 10 Miles Per Hour shy of hurricane strength. So the winds with this storm will be pretty severe. But hopefully, people would live in these areas, in this huge area that stretches this entire path of the storm, warning and stay inside. That sounds just miserable. Thank you for being with us. Stay safe. I cant even imagine. All that snow and 56mile an hour winds. It is unbelievable. Our coverage continues from our northernmost counties. Saw some of most snow from thisnee o oro. Hundreds of Flights Canceled because of this storm. Travelers are stuck in many cases. That make it tough. Wrals Sloan Heffernan continues our Team Coverage live from the airport. What are you seeing there . Reporter gerald and lynda, it is quiet everywhere except for the delta counter this afternoon. Check out this line behind me. It goes almost to the door. Operating day. The other is allegiant airline. These folks are lined up. It will be a very long day or it has proven to be a very long day for a lot of people trying to get out of this airport today. We want to give you a look outside at rdu. And only one runway is open at this hour. The majority of airlines have canceled all of that are flights today and tomorrow. More than 400 flights have been canceled. Early are today, we met with one family who arrived from new york. They were supposed to arrive last night and after two canceled flights and one delay, they finally made it. It is amazing. It feels like a miracle. So it is my sisters birthday and my friends wedding and we hope can get back home on sunday. They will need some luck for that as well. Northeast is expecting a making it out on sunday. So the delays and cancellations are likely to continue throughout the weekend and maybe beyond. Your best bet is to call before you come. Back to you. Save yourself some of the hassle. Charlotte saw a few inches of snow in uptown charlotte. Of course, there were a couple of dogs that needed their morning walk. Nature calls. Doesnt matter what the we are is. Other than that, city was pretty much a ghost town. Compare empty streets to long lines at the charlotte airport. Travelers scrambled to catch some of the last plights out before airlines started canceling their flights. In southern pines, an unusual trailer. These images are from the aberdeen times. The semi crash ad long u. S. Highway 1 and hit a large dot sign. Anterior part with some of the trailer still attached to the truck. No other vehicles were involved and the driver wasnt seriously hurt. One lane of highway 1 had to be shut down this morning near the midlands road exit. Insane boyz. These icy conditions havent let up this afternoon. Lets check in th nate johnson for another traffic update. We are seeing a wide range across our area. The roads looking pretty good here. They are relatively wet and some lush in the roadways. That is probably as good as it gets in wake county and in the triangle in general. As we head up toward the durham freeway, you see only one lane really passable with snow and some sleet, slush blocking the other lane there. As we take a look at 85 at 15501 also in durham county, the roads are covered with snow and sleet so that is causing some problems here as well. And what traffic there is out there moving well below the posted speed limit. That is just on the main interstate routes. When you get off of the main roads, it can get pretty dicey as well. Here is edwards mill and ready creek if you are planning on heading out to the canes game tonight which is being played starting at 7 00. You may encounter this. Have some lanes passable here on edwards mill but youve got a lot of slush in the middle of the roads as well. Notice the stoplights here swinging in the wind. It is rather breezy out there. Keep that in mind. A number of accidents slowing up on the live commute map. Also some patches of red here and there. The colors not as indicative as they would normally be because Traffic Volume is so low. If you dont have to be outside, out driving today, University Stay home, let the dot crews do their work an hopefully get ahead of the back to you. Thank you. We have abeen showing you conditions in our area all day roxboro in Person County in fact received the most snow. In this video, you see the red pickup truck on the top of your screen losing some traction coming around a corner. Shows you how slick the roads are today. And the thing is if you are out and about, take your time. No accident this time but weve seen several accidents around the area because of this weather. This morning, fayetteville got freezing rain with ice forming on the trees and sidewalks. Adam owen is in Cumberland County an update. They are looking pretty good compared to how some other folks are faring. You can see there is quite a bit of traffic out. People seem to be going about their business this evening. But if you are able to make it out, you will see this area. There is ice forming on a lot of the branches. We were traveling down the road here, Mcpherson Church road and note id that some of the ice was weighing down some branches. Roadway over one travel lane. City crews are coming in here taking those things down and correcting those as they show up. I talked to the Police Department recently. They say they have no major issues, no major problems in the city of fayetteville right now. I also talked with the state droppers who run this year as well and they tell me that weve had accidents that you would expect on an inclement weather day but nothing serious, nothing really serious to report. So in this area, they are doing fairly well at least for the thank you. It is college prep time and hundreds of students across the area take the s. A. T. S this weekend. More than 40 test center have canceled the test tomorrow because of the weather. They will make them up in february. Can you check your test center and find a link on our web site, wral. Com. We took capital boulevard where we are now and i can tell you, the sleet changing over to rain is actually helping to improve the Road Conditions on main roads like this. But not before the storm already made its mark. The crackle of sleet on i windshield complimented the wintry mix on the roads. Our trek took us up 401. Limited traffic cut done on business. They salted the park lot but by late more than, manager kevin eddins saw zero customers. Brakes and people sliding around the corners. Reporter pretreatment kept the roads in pretty good shape. Side roads, not so much. New, you see the sleet bouncing off my jacket. Our next stop, wake forest. A sort of quiet cold for the quaipt downtown. The back streets are a mess. Reporter john grew up in michigan driving in conditions like this. His advice, stay home. You go to areas where there is patches of ice and then we get to areas where we have slush and then you have some clear areas. So it is just a dicey mix. Reporter no problems for these young sledders who made the most of their day on their slick neighborhood street. And certainly some good news for wake county during our entire trek today. We did in the see one accident. With the rain, the question is what does the future hold now . Lynda . Im envious of that sledding that looked nice. I cant believe you didnt get on a sled. Next time. Thank you. This storm has made its way north where millions of people are bracing for the worst. We want to take a live look now at the white house as snow continues to fall in the Nations Capital. Clearly, they are bracing for between two and three feet. It is a monster storm headed that way. Around here, we have our own problems with the ice continuing to build up on some power lines and industries at least across parts of the area. Well let you know which regions are likely to continue evening, coming up. The National Weather service says this winter storm will be one of the worst to hit the east coast. More than 77 Million People are in its path. Craig boswell is live in washington d. C. To continue our Team Coverage. Falling this afternoon a bit ago. The ty bracing for a major impact though. Snow plows have rolled out as the storm is rolling in. I spoke for a driver who said he is ready to move two and a half, three feet of snow off the roads in a storm that officials are calling life threatening.
